Seeing Orikaehshasdighstahtae's thread about Dystopia has inspired me. It has brought back wistful memories of playing games of Diplomacy in the lobby of my dorm with a group of people and a pile of pizza. Good times were had.

This is Diplomacy:

diplomacy.jpg

It is played on a map like this:

<see below>

There are many variations of the map, but that is the standard one.

The game is very simple: 7 people representing various European countries in the 1400's (I think? Anyone know for sure) vie for world domination. Unlike Risk, however, this game requires an immense amount of strategy and finesses rather than pure luck. The core of the game is taking over countries that have supply centers; more supply centers means more armies you can build up.

Fighting is very simple. You have to have more armies bordering a country than the other guy. For example, say you have 1 army in France, and your opponent has an army in Spain. If you try try to attack Spain, your armies will "bounce" and nothing will happen. Now if you take 2 armies bordering Spain and attack it, you can successfully take over Spain. That simple.

Where it gets interesting is in the ordering/negotiating phase. Between each turn of the game, the players all give their units specific orders, such as "Army number one moves into Germany." During this phase, you are free to talk to other countries as much as you'd like and try to get their support to take over other countries. This is where the finesse comes in. Now, when making negotiations, you have to be careful. Players are free to back out of agreements they make with others, making backstabbing and treachery a normal and oh so fun part of the game.

People who are playing:

Demonic Toaster of DOOM
ArrBeeBee
Thaox
Borfase
MisterLongbaugh
Lord Cecil Eaglelaser
Ethan Smith

We are having move orders be due every other day, starting Friday, March 2nd at 11:59 PM. If there are ever retreat and/or build orders due, you will have a day to send them.

All the intrigue is going behind the scenes, using gmail accounts. But you should be able to guess who is in league with who based on who supports who, etc.

It's 8, moves are due in 4 hours, I have very few orders in, and one of the people was under the misconception that build orders take place every turn.

Build orders take place after the fall turn.

    Thank you.

Maybe not have orders due on the weekend? I know I was gone all weekend and didn't have time to even think about my moves until I got back home at like 8. Perhaps this is the case for others.

I'm sure you already sent them several e-mails asking for orders, so, maybe just do a warning this time and have all their units hold. If it happens again then replace them with a player who can keep up with the brutal speed of the game (sarcasm).

Do you guys think this sounds fair?

Having all their units hold would be as good as a death blow, depending on the circumstances.

Alright. I got Qs23, but Cecil PMed me at the same time, making me feel terrible whichever way I went. I let Cecil off the hook this time, as well as the others who were late, but in the future:

You get 24 individual hours of lateness starting now. If you are late an hour, you have 23 hours, etc. If you're late more than a day for the rest of the game, I'll get Qs, who will happily take over for anybody.

    Now for the update:

Turkey didn't send his build in on time (again with the lateness), so I just chose one of his possibilities at random. And it told me army con. This will happen every time somebody misses a build order: I will randomly pick out of the possible build orders.
