The Pirate Bay, Online Apps and DRM

Goodbye Pirate Bay! It seems they've gone the way of Suprnova and Napster, being bought out, gutted, and soon to be ressurected as a ghost of their former selves.

Since we're not allowed to talk about how to pirate or infringe copyright, I figure this is a good thread to talk about what kind of legal programs you guys use to get data over the internet. I'd also like to hear your thoughts on DRM and the legality of all this.

I use Steam a lot, it's pretty much replaced all my computer games purchases now.

Grooveshark is the best for music, you can listen to pretty much any song on there.

I'm still looking for a good Hulu-like TV streaming services that will work in Canada.

I use Google Reader a lot for news aggregation and keeping up to date with worldwide news.

What other services do you guys use online? What do you do with your internet connections?

Also hurf durf downloading porn yes I know.

I am a slave to the big G.

Google Voice has begun slowly rolling out invites to people. I've had an account with them since it was still GrandCentral, but I'd really like the option to change my number, even if just once.

Mint.com is great for managing your finances.

Dropbox is an excellent way to keep files on multiple computers, and share them with others.

i uh, well, i saw that google voice was inviting people and i was like hey didnt i get invited to grand central

turns out that i did, but i never finished activating my account back then because i forgot or something?
and therefore when i logged in they were like, this account never finished activation and is unavailable

and that was in 2007 when i got that invite, so now i have to wait for a google voice invite

    stupid!

It's useful without having a second computer. The web interface allows you to download files you've synced as well as undo delete actions. Plus the iPhone interface is super nice.

they are, but because they're international the US government/RIAA can't do much about it without working something out with ROMS (the Russian Organization for Multimedia Systems)

their copyright laws are entirely different and basically allow people to sell music as much as they want until the copyright holder requests their own royalties

not to mention, if you do a search for "The Beatles", you can buy their albums. the rights to The Beatles catalog isn't available to anyone to sell on any MP3 store at the moment, let alone some random russian website

i really hope you morons aren't handing over your credit card information to get "legal" 8 cent music downloads

Also let's talk about how cool emusic is and how they're changing up their pricing model, sorta, and also adding a shitload of music this summer

They're changing it so if an album is more than....twelve songs I think, you still only use up twelve downloads when you buy it

    Which is awesome

I use AmazonMP3 and Lala.com for music. Lala albums are usually less than $10, and I can stream them from their site for free from any computer connected to the internet.

emusic is awesome and the changes they're making are awesome

I just wish they'd add rollover since they increased their subscription prices already to compensate for the album changes

it's annoying that at the end of each month I have to scramble to spend my MP3 credits or they just disappear

maybe if this was 1993 when there was no fraud protection and nobody bothered to check their account

and they are legal, they are legally purchased in a sovereign nation and transferred to ownership in the us and ex-post-facto law protects anybody that may download now if this actually does become illegal

AmieStreet is a neat music seller too. They set the price of an album really low, and as it becomes more popular its price increases, but never to more than ~$.89 a song, so by supporting an artist early on, you wind up saving yourself a few bucks.

Emusic is pretty sweet, hi5! I was kind of saddened that my old ass, grandfathered-in plan is no longer valid, but I guess adding a ton more music makes up for it.

I still need to pick the rest of my downloads for this month, though.

I just canceled my account again, just because I don't have enough music to buy that's on there to justify it

    man that ain't a thing

they are technically dubious, but not illegal

or in the very least, if you are somehow caught any competent lawyer would be able to argue their way out of it
