Buying something legitimately these days is oftentimes more convenient than having to go browse around the internet looking for a torrent that works.
It's just too bad the RIAA is a dinosaur who is too busy trying to ward off their own extinction than actually push themselves forward into the future.

i'm a remorseless pirate, and even i'd rather just buy something off of steam
Uh...call me sally but pretty sure The Pirate Bay is still going strong.
They've just announced that they're selling the site to a swedish game company that will remove all the illegal torrents, which is pretty much all of them.

Steam is great because I can go through thirty computers, reformat my computer over and over and my house can burn down or my dog can eat all my CDs and I'll still be able to play my games.
The sad thing is
There are people who despise that they need to keep a small small programming running to play games forever
BECAUSE WHAT IF VALVE GOES OUT OF BUSINESS NO MORE STEAM NO MORE GAMES
not only does it provide a cheap, simple and effective digital distribution method which discourages piracy by offering you service as a reward rather than fucking you over as a threat
it also allows quirky and indie games to shine that might not ever be available in a gamestop
and it is a great place to get classic games for like ten bucks
News reached the press today in Sweden - The Pirate Bay might get aquired by Global Gaming Factory X AB.
A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either!
TPB is being sold for a great bit underneath it's value if the money would be the interesting part. It's not. The interesting thing is that the right people with the right attitude and possibilities keep running the site.
As all of you know, there's not been much news on the site for the past two-three years. It's the same site essentially. On the internets, stuff dies if it doesn't evolve. We don't want that to happen.
We've been working on this project for many years. It's time to invite more people into the project, in a way that is secure and safe for everybody. We need that, or the site will die. And letting TPB die is the last thing that is allowed to happen!
If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.
The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets - quite the opposite. Now we're fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It's win-win-win.
The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy!

If pirating has become such a hassle where most people just suck it up and buy their own damn copy instead of finding a working torrent, doesn't that mean the anti-piracy stuff is working?
Have you tried to download a pirated copy of Windows, lately? Shit be difficult. And I can't even imagine how it could ever be done with Apple.

of that I use maybe 100 gigs a month, and the majority of that is from wook's file hosting (he somehow uses about 3 gigs a day, I don't know what's up with that)

most of the drm on games is not in the least bit of a hassle to correct
it tends to fuck over people who legitimately buy a copy more than pirates, which is completely counter intuitive
i think, in general, the best way to combat piracy is to give people special shit beyond just what they are paying for as a reward for making a legal purchase
example
years ago i bought avalanche, a CD by Matthew Good
in the CD, there was a card with a key code on it, that i could go to his official website and create an account with
this account was like a special fan club access thing that gave me advanced concert ticket sales and even the one time, i got free tickets to a special small show he was doing just for members of this club
that's the way to go about this shit

Well I mean it would be nice if you could just install the game you want so you wouldn't have to keep Steam running. Some people don't have the RAM for so many background applications, especially if they want to be playing a game at the same time. But it still keeps the record that you've purchased the game so if your system is ever compromised you can just get everything again no sweat. Blizzard does this with their games, actually, and it works great.
I'm not one of those people, but I think it would be a welcome change. With friends lists and whatnot there's enough incentive to keep Steam running in its own right, but it's hardly an outlandish request.
I thought Valve had said that if they do close they have a plan of some kind for Steam users so they don't just get cut off. That may just apply to their games, though.

Can you blame people who are wary about pumping hundreds of pounds into a system which may one day, however unlikely, remove all of that content? Whenever possible I get the disc version of a game. Heck, plenty of digital distribution outlets mail you the DVD and offer the files for download too.
I just reminded myself, I need to pick up the Tex Murphy games on GOG, they just announced them a week or two ago.
I got Gothic 1 and 2 off GoG
unfortunately there's some sort of bug with my video card so items aren't pictured in my inventory
they're still there, it's just the inventory space is blank
Weird. I had some troubles running Fallout and Fallout 2 on my Mini through WINE, and for some reason it has trouble in XP on it as well. Like, the mouse cursor moves balls slow across the screen. It's a bug that people know of, but haven't been able to sort out a decent working fix yet.

It's not really counter-intuitive, just annoying.
Counter-intuitive would be the drm making the game actually easier to pirate. It's just a dick move, is all.

Yeah, I don't think there is a fix for the Gothic thing. Not that I'm too bothered about it anyway, the game's still perfectly playable. Or as playable as a game with an interface that convoluted can be.
and then was like "steam, install all my games, please"
went and played Rock Band with my buddies for a few hours
and then poof
all my games were downloaded and installed
how sweet is that
You should have backed up your account and transferred it over using either discs or flash/portable memory. Took me 6 minutes to recover 29 gigs of games that I would rather not redownload, even on my ludicrous connection. It'll even partition the compressed files to any size for any kind of media.
Did it earlier today. Super slick and I cant believe I didn't know about it.

I love when they do this. WoW does the same thing. It doesn't fuck with the registry at all so you can play it off of portable drives.

When I bought DoWII I popped in the CD and Steam was like "Oh hey, yeah, you own that now, if you need to download it again I'm right over here, just lemme know."
So nice after having to reformat.
And yes what is all this about being able to copy stuff to a thumbdrive as a backup?
I think Steam vaporizing (tee hee) was a valid concern like 5 years ago, which is why I never really jumped on it for a lot of things right away. But given what it has evolved into, I don't think the fear really exists anymore except for a very miniscule, very distant future "what if"
And for me, if Steam goes under 10 years from now I've most certainly got my moneys worth out of it and there will probably be something new and better out there anyway.

Neither of these things is difficult.
But the thing is, not many games have difficult copy protection if you aren't retarded. The problem is when it screws with people who legitimately bought the game and makes it so they have to either pirate the game or wait a few weeks for the company to fix their problem

I have almost 10 terabytes of bandwidth
of that I use maybe 100 gigs a month, and the majority of that is from wook's file hosting (he somehow uses about 3 gigs a day, I don't know what's up with that)
I just realized I can finally run HL2 and have it look decent
I'm going to download it through Steam again!
Maybe even Ep1 but probably not because fucking zombies!
If there was any risk of it sure
But at this moment there isn't
