god, i love this thread and love you, scarlet. arcanum is one of my favorite pc games ever. fourway tie between this, x-com, jagged alliance, and indiana jones and the fate of atlantis. just such a great, immersive world, and i really wish they made a sequel, bugs and all. plus, the music is the best
But the bugs and the fact that your choices DRASTICALLY affected the difficulty of the game made me hate it towards the end.
For example, there is this portion where you are in a mine.
And there are these golems.
If you are in turn based mode, the golems will run up to you in a second flat and beat you to a pulp.
But in real time mode the golems move at a fraction of your own running speed and you can just kite them forever. The difference in difficulty was crazy.

As for the bugs, the unofficial patch really helps. I haven't had any game-breaking bugs yet, and I've made it clear through 17 levels so far.
I love this game so much. Partially because its so easy to break. My latest character was a dashing fast-talking boxer who, being lightly encumbered in his smoking jacket, with electricity charged rings, and drunk on a speed potion, was able to dole out something like 20 unarmed attacks a turn by level 10. Hell yeah!
I could re-install this and play it if only my computer didn't crash randomly whenever I asked it to do anything involving things like the (relatively-powerful) video-card!
I'll be buying a new machine soon and then I'll dig this thread up.
I beat this game with an elvish mage/summoner who was 100% good and 100% bisexual nymphomaniac.
Tried playing it again with a mean old halfling gunslinger but only made it a little past Caladon.
This game really would have benefited from difficulty settings.
There are difficulty settings! They're in Options :P
Also, whoever mentioned that Gar won't wear armor: he will wear barbarian clothing. This might be a part of the unofficial patch, but it's definitely for the better.
So a dude asks me to rob a bank, says we'll split the profit 50/50. I agree, and he gives me the vault access code. I IMMEDIATELY turn him into the local sheriff, help the sheriff fend off an attack by other robbers, loot all their bodies, then sneak in at night and rob the bank myself. I come out 750 gold richer (counting the shit I looted), split it with nobody, and look like a saint.

Oh for fucks sake, that would have been a good thing to make you set at the start of the game.
I'm pretty sure that difficulty settings can be changed mid-game, but they aren't that impactful...
Switching it to Easy will give you +25% to hit and I think it decreases incoming damage by 25%, but when you're talking about Seething Masses, that just means you die in 2 turns instead of 1.
Garr required something like 11 int to get, and you have to tell him his tea sucks and he'll get all huffy then join you. He can't wear leather but I'm fairly certain he can wear any barbarian clothing OR chain mail. He's a decent follower but if you wan't brawn then Sodd is still better. Especially for an evil character.

Yeah Shrouded Hills is boring as fuck.
But never got around to it.

Secret Satan
that fucking mine
but the first one is the worst since you can't possibly talk your way out of it.
I'd go through all of 'em, hoping to find something cool
and hey, occasionally I actually did!
The first mine - who the fuck puts traps in a MINE?
I mean, you know?
Those are unsafe work conditions!
That was confusing.
I love the dude you can liberate from the museum. I seem to recall him kicking some ass.
Don't you have an LP of that which you left pretty early? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Yes. G+T. Did you look at the OP? It's shit. This is a real thread.

Gar? He was the best. Motherfucker refuses to wear armor though.
Spoiled just in case.
Best NPC for tactical purposes is still, Smogg, i think that's him? The ogre in Shrouded Hills? Give him a magic sword/axe or a tech sword/axe. Bam

Like this thread, forever.
(I mean, it's a good thread.)
It's alright.
What if it's too good?
What if it reaches the moon!?

WISHLIST
Man if I had a quarter for every LP I'd abandoned... I'd have $1.50.
Yes, yes. That's one of the best dialogs in the game.
I don't think people really understand how immersive and huge Arcanum is. It makes a game like Oblivion look like Duck Hunt.

Love this game.
I am enjoying playing through it with a guy, but I feel like I would enjoy reading an LP almost as much.
