The guy who helped me out is actually from the UK. One of those little things I enjoy about all MMO's, that you end up talking to and playing with people from all over the world.

Again, I happen to REALLY like Asura. So far, decent groups, and I already have a possible link shell group, made up of 2 Germans, a UKer, myself, and another US guy, and I haven't even met up with any PAers. If your PA, drop a line to Varega, Black Mage made of awesome.

Hey Bri, I don't suppose there's a way to check the members of a LS if they're not online?

I'd like to know if you can check the LS you gave me when I was back in last summer. It was Social Entropy, but it was spelled wrong. I'm just curious if you can see my jobs that I had on when I last logged and my level.

That LS is no more. However, all is not lost. Join the lscom website and it should tell you all about any characters you have. To further answer your question though, no, there is no way to obtain information about a character that is not logged in from in-game.

Well, I broke down and bought VDC '07. I gave my brother the buddy pass and he wants to be a RDM to begin. I'm not sure what to choose though, I ultimately want to be either RNG or COR. I'm thinking that THF would be best for my starting job. What do the FFXI vets think?

I love PTing with THF, between all their special moves and the eventual treasure hunter ability you cant go wrong. Some people may piss and moan that they are not a good DD and would rather have a WAR , MNK, NIN but whatever. Alot of jobs that may start out kinda lame become really helpful in the mid to upper levels ie: BST not to good at DD and charming things is really dangerous in normal PT areas but once they can use Jug Pets they rock. But in the end you will get PTs regardless of your jobs, I was in a PT with a DRG/BLU last night, as long as they hold there own and dont do something critically stupid they are fine.

    Hey guys,

I just wanted to say that I'm also on Asura. I started the old thread a little while ago because I wanted to start playing due to running into a friend of mine over Christmas who was fairly active.

I ended up getting three free months of WoW by signing people up, but when that ends in April I'm going back to FF XI. I've got a low level Taru BLM right now. I'll look up all you guys who play there.

Ive only ever played WOW - and quite frankly am sick of it. Is this worth getting into? Looks like you can get all expansions for 30 bucks. Hear tell you lose a level when you die? Is that true? How easy (with the game being so old) is it to get into?

Is it worth getting into? That is a tough question to asnwer, seeing as we don't know what you like. I will say that this is a slow paced game when you are between parties. You may spend lots of time doing upkeep type things, or working on some craft skill; or perhaps resource-gathering to sell to craft people.

You lose an amount of exp when you die that is based on the amount it takes you to gain a level. The higher level you are, the more exp you lose when you die. If you just leveled and then die, you may lose enough exp to delevel. It just happened to me today, as a matter of fact. I was about 130 exp points into level 33 and died, taking me down to about 325 exp from level 33.

The game is not hard at all to get into. You can get to level 10 on any of the jobs in a day if you try, and most people don't even bother with partying before that point. At the most basic levels, the game is easy, it focuses on specialist party roles. However, if you care to study it a bit you will find that there is enough complexity under the surface to keep things interesting, if elemental afinities and weakness are something you care to research.

Most people spend levels 10 through 20 learning how thier jobs work in a group, and then the next 20 levels refining thier technique. Around level 40 your parties start feeling like well-oiled killing machines.

Hmmm - it looks like the game requires a Credit Card to play? - No game cards?

What about for the free first month? Does it require you to register a CC?

You have to give them your billing info, they just don't charge you for the first month. That is pretty much the standard in the industry.

And those check cards work, most banks issue them. Anything with the MC or Visa logos.

    You know what you could try, though i can't promise anything;

You can now buy those reloadable "gift cards" from visa, MC, Amex, that work like credit cards (have the logo, swipe at stores, etc), but you load them with cash at your bank or whatever.

You might find a store/bank that sells them and give it a shot.

It seems most returning/new people are hopping on Asura? Is there any difference in the realms - location wise? I heard you can play with Japanese players as well. . .that would be a fun way to practice my speaking.

Basically I've only ever played WoW - which was very "Hey Im Not Into MMORPG" friendly. . .but Im ready for a change (mostly just sick of WOW and my guild).

Haha - yea im going to bed. . .it got through dling 14K files - then hopped over to dling another 3K. . .

Basically I've only ever played WoW - which was very "Hey Im Not Into MMORPG" friendly. . .but Im ready for a change (mostly just sick of WOW and my guild).

All servers are all countries. So there are Japanese people, English-speaking people, other random Europeans, on all servers.

You could practice your Japanese I suppose but I don't think any of them would talk to you in Romanji..I see people typing in Hiragana, don't know how you'd do that quickly with a US keyboard in game. One guy ran up to me the other day and said 'konichiwa' in hiragana, I typed it back in romanji but then he just ran away. Who knows.

This game is a *lot* less forgiving than WoW as far as holding your hand and all that. If WoW and FFXI were people you just met it would go like this:

WoW: Hey there buddy, come with me, I'll show you where to get quests and train! We'll have lots of fun together!

FFXI: Hey, get the fuck back! Stay at arms length man, I'm not here to hold your hand.
    You: Where to next?
FFXI: Fuck if I know...good luck.

For instance, in WoW the people with quests available to you have these big glowing exclamation points over their heads. In FFXI, the people with the quests (or missions, two different things) have no such marker. They look like all the other NPC's strewn across a town. Same with vendors, in WoW if you mouse over a vendor a little bag icon appears, in FFXI there is no such icon.

There are no "town guards" who serve as human directories in towns. Now some NPC's may tell you where certain things are when you talk to them, but there is no menu like in WoW with everything you could possibly need to find as well as a minimap marker to it.

In some locations you will open the map screen and it will say "No Map Available" which means you need to go buy the map. Once again, you need to find that random NPC who looks like all the other NPC's, who sells maps.

Upside? Everyone (at least on Asura) is extremely friendly. I outlined my experiences a few posts ago. If you're lost people will usually be more than happy to personally take you to where it is or give you good directions. Once you learn where all the stuff is in your starting town you won't have a problem getting around.

Also FFXIclopedia.org has all the information you'd ever need, including answers to the shit above. Think of it as your new Thottbot that you'll need to use for more than just looking up that next piece of phat lewts.

Obviously there's a myriad of other differences but just keep in mind that this game is not as user friendly as WoW.

The game itself is pretty cool though, I haven't gotten far enough into it to judge it fairly though.

On the subject of maps though, the NPCs who sell them can be found in obvious places, like within sight of town gates.

All the NPCs you see in game are there for a purpose. They all have a quest or a store or something attached to them. However, the above post is correct in that the game will not tell you at what point you qualify for those quests.

I would not agree with the hostile tone attached to the hypothetical personifications of the games in the above post, but he is correct in that FFXI will not shepard you through its content on railroad tracks.

No - I can read hiragana and katakana - romaji is what we learned in the beginning - for all of 2 weeks. . .after that its was all HI/KAT. . .I can read romaji, but hira-kata is so much quicker - its like when we read english - you dont read all the words right - same in japanese. . .with romaji i have to read all of it. . .

I made a Red Mage on Asura. Ensabahnur. I know nothing about class desireability and the like - but Red Mages looked useful, w/o being healbots like priests.

You change the graphics outside of the game. Controls are unchangeable, though, and they take some time to get used to. Remember, the game was first designed for the PS2, so it can seem slightly archaic on the PC. You get used to it eventually, though... and now, I actually think that FFXI has the best interface and controls of any MMO.

it does work far better IMO with a controller. I bought a adapter that lets me use my PS2 controller through USB. Makes life a lot easier.

I never got the hang of using a mouse/keyboard for it. if you have a dual analog controller for the PC (doesnt have to be any particular brand) it will work, you just have to turn it on I think.

And yeah, graphic settings are in the config that can only be ran if you're not in FFXI/POL.

As far as in a window, I was under the impression that running in a window was one of the additions this last patch.
