MechWarrior 5: What's the Scoop?
MechWarrior 5 is a reboot of the classic MechWarrior franchise. It's NOT a MechAssault game, it's a MechWarrior game, which means simulation, customization, blowing off limbs, heatsinks, and a robot female voice playing while you sit inside your mech cockpit furiously pressing buttons to stop your ammunition from exploding while your lancemates fire volleys of 20 missiles into an unending stream of giant enemy robots that are trying to kill you with lasers.

MechWarrior 5 is actually MechWarrior Online, though. It's a free to play MMO that will follow (in real time) the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, which is a thing. We don't know much yet but here is the website.

I Played MechAssault on my XBOX and It Was Boring. Why do I Care About This?
Yo fuck MechAssault. MechWarrior is a venerable franchise that, as far as videogames go, dates back to MechWarrior, which was fun but was made before graphics were invented, MechWarrior 2, which was sweet but mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, which is one of the best games ever made. MechWarrior 3 was by all accounts sort of fun and MechWarrior 4 was mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was also pretty sweet and which is FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE! The MechWarrior games are simulations and damn good ones, too. There aren't too many complicated buttons but there are enough, and the HUD ends up looking a bit like an F-14's HUD looks like if the F-14 was designed to blow off the legs of an enemy F-14. With lasers.

I Just CAN'T GET ENOUGH MECH STUFF!
Oookay, well, you've got a few options.

MechCommander
MechCommander and MechCommander 2 are free. They're pretty fun; you basically load out your 'mechs and command them in battle. They're pretty good recreations of the MechWarrior games, actually. Certainly worth a look if you enjoy strategy and mechs.

MechWarrior 4
MechWarrior 4 is free too. MekTek, which released tons of awesome mech "paks" and stuff for the game, has been given the rights to release it because god loves MechWarrior and is smiling on us fans or something. The free version comes with MekPak 3.1 which adds even more stuff and adds the new 'mechs into single player. This is probably the best MechWarrior single player experience right now.

MechWarrior: Living Legends
Living Legends is a kickass Crysis Wars MechWarrior mod. It's almost professional quality. The graphics are stupendous and they've done more than just add 'mechs: you get a bunch of the air vehicles and ground vehicles, too, plus Elementals if you're silly enough NOT to want to pilot a giant walking tank. The mod is multiplayer only and it even has Solaris arena matches in there. Definitely check this out if you have Crysis Wars, because it's free (as long as you own Crysis Wars, duh).

MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 2 is not free but if you own a copy already (like, say, MW2: Mercenaries woooo) you can get it running on Windows XP (and Vista and 7?) with MechVM. Install MechVM, put your CD in, and tell MechVM to install from the CD. Bada-bing, it runs fine. I'm playing Mercenaries right now and I'm stuck on an early level where I have to escort some people to a prison that the AI keeps blowing up in order to make me lose. An alternative is to use MW2hook which works pretty well but is a bit of work to figure out.

MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior3.org should have everything you need to get up and running with the worst game in the series since MechWarrior 1. That said, it's still a pretty good game. I don't think there's ever been a bad MechWarrior game really.

You should post a link to the MW3 forums too, for those who are trying to play MW3 on a modern computer, and maybe the free MechCommander stuff too

I finally got around to watching the HD video.

Goddamn, that is awesome. And I seem to remember some people making fun of MW3's intro's "surprise Atlas"....looks like Atlases are the gigantic, skull-faced Ninjas of the BT universe.

Also words fail to indicate just how pleased I am to see MechWarrior getting a reboot. I was just bemoaning the lack of such a thing a month or two ago. Gleeeee.

My joystick is dead, so I'm not going to be enjoy MW4 (probably go back to MW3 with a mouse and keyboard), but waiting for this is going to be damned exciting.

I'm a little worried about the "health percentage" factor though. Still, this is just a teaser.

My guess is that they didn't want to bother designing and animating the whole UI and stuff for all three mechs when that's probably not even the final UI. I mean, the Atlas loses an arm in the video and I can't imagine they'd even consider making a mech game without full locational damage.

Oh, I'm sure locational damage will be in there.

I'm hoping information like that, speed, heat, will for once be on console display screen. Seriously, this could be the first MW game with actual useful instrumentation and displays, instead of everything crammed on a HUD. The HUD option should remain, but it would definitely be possible with the sort of resolutions we use nowadays.

As cool as walking robots are there really just isn't much of a point to them. Why have legs at all when treads work better.

The sad but true fact is there isn't a point to having a tank with legs.

Incorrect. Tracks don't work that well on paved roads and a thrown track can take a while to repair. Legs should work on pretty much any terrain and would be better protected than tracks.

Isn't that the point of Agromechs?

So apparently the newest MegaMech release has aerospace and space combat implemented. I just ran a quick test space fight with an Avalon and two Fox corvettes against a Clan Potemkin and a Clan Cameron.

This is some crazy shit. Like... there are at least 6 firing arcs and you have to cycle through something like 5 weapons each or more.

Those were the best briefings I've heard yet in a MW game, and among the very best briefings in any game. It was a shame that the expansion pack had the lance leader narrating instead the MFB commander.

Mouse and Board works very well with MW4 as long as you take the time to remap a few keys.

WS for throttle, AD to turn, Mouse for torso control. Make sure to check the button that allows you to look up and down as well as side to side. The rest of the stuff is easy enough to modify to taste.

To be fair, MW3 was the only MW game that I remember salvaging for ammo really being important in. The others made it easy enough to sell random crap and buy the ammo you needed, if they bothered assigning a cost to rearm in the first place

In MW2:Mercs it should have mattered, once you started salvaging Clan weapons, but you never found ammo (unless you managed to take it off a Mech you took mostly intact). You couldn't buy Clan ammunition, obviously, and there weren't any ammo caches to be salvaged.

Basically rendered all non-energy Clan weapons useless really fast.

There may be a way to get a wheeled vehicle over any terrain type we've encountered, but show me a wheeled vehicle that can efficiently navigate ALL terrain types without modification. That is the appeal of a walker versus a tracked/wheeled vehicle, the versatility proven by humanity itself that two feet are more versatile than wheels or tracks.

I guess the real question is: If you can't get a wheeled vehicle there, why don't you just shell the crap out of it?

Legs just have a lot of problems to overcome. Vulnerable joints, weight distribution, complexity, difficulty of replacement and repair, etc. Also, 4 feet are more versatile than 2. Go spider mechs! I also hope to see some of those in MW5.

Legs have problems. But they look so much damn cooler.

Because it's a goddamn cave with an eight-foot entrance that could technically go three miles into solid granite. Shelling that shit just doesn't work - about the best you can hope for is to collapse the entrance and hope no-one inside has a shovel or thought to hide in a cave with two exits. And even then you have to be careful of that entrance for evermore, in case someone decides that since that particular hole is on your flank now it'd be a good idea to launch a few RPGs from.

Not that a 'mech would be much use in those conditions; a few BigDogs with a 300Kg payload of C4 and a remote detonator would be infinitely superior as a weapon against a cave.

You wouldn't even need the C4, just send in the Big Dogs, can you imagine being stuck in a pitch black cave with those things making that screaming noise as they lope towards you. *shudder*

Also the capture your own planet finale mission for the Steiner path in Mechwarrior 4 has got to be one of my favourite moments in gaming. Its just crazy awesome fun seeing the amount of units deployed and it really gave the sense of this being a full scale battle as opposed to just a mission in a game or a minor skirmish, the amount of crap going on at once actually does a good job of showing why they still use crap like helicopters that get 1-shotted by mechs, when you're engaging with armour and a couple of heavy lances at the same time the harassment factor from those things really does work.
