I didn't see a thread for this
I just got back from this and i thought it was great. There was a slow build at the start and i found the shaky camera to be distracting but all in all i thought it was a excellent film. The effects are better than transformers and star wars IMO and the movie as a whole was different than anything i've seen in a while.
I strongly recommend this.

well (no spoilers) The movie opens documentary style revealing the 20 year history of aliens on earth, so it's news clips and interviews then a camera crew follows the main character as he attempts to evict the aliens. Its a little like The Office in that aspect of shooting. But sometimes it gets a little shaky. I dunno if it stopped or i adjusted, but i didn't seem to notice it as much mid and later in the film.

So, the impression I'm getting from previews is a stealth social commentary flick disguised as a sci-fi thriller. Is this the case? Dark Knight levels of commentary is about the most I can tolerate in my entertainment, should I bother seeing this?

Nope it's just a cool ass sci-fi thriller. I mean the people in the movie get mad at the aliens and call them "Prawn" in a derogatory way...but thats about it. It felt like a very realistic approach as to what would happen.

I just read an article on CNN about the director and he said it had some social commentary, but it didn't beat you up about it. He was trying to parallel what it was like for him growing up, but with aliens.

After reading more about this movie it sounds like Earth is the small town you wind up in when you car breaks down. We must be charging a premium for parts and labor.

Wow this movie was pretty good. One of those films you don't know who to root for. Like I don't even know about them Prawns...

Also kinda got me a bit peeved cause I get peeved when racism or treating others different from you for personal gain comes up.

Just saw it, pretty excellent. Definitely more of an "action film with a conscience" than a serious look at apartheid and racism and what have you, but that's what I came in expecting.

well if you only have reviews from people that liked a film, even if you feel the film is great, then doesn't that raise broader editorial concerns?
it's better to include the opinion of some nimrod that hates everything good than to start deciding not to include some reviews because the staff don't agree with them
