So after 26 years, Reading Rainbow is going off the air today. I watched this show religiously when I was young, and I had hoped to share it with my future kids, but I guess they'll have to live with reruns.
Grant says the funding crunch is partially to blame, but the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading — like phonics and spelling.

Grant says that PBS, CPB and the Department of Education put significant funding toward programming that would teach kids how to read — but that's not what Reading Rainbow was trying to do.

"Reading Rainbow taught kids why to read," Grant says. "You know, the love of reading — [the show] encouraged kids to pick up a book and to read."

I AM TRYING NOT TO CRY AND I AM FAILING

Talk about how awesome this show was and how LeVar Burton is now unemployed again.

    Fuck.

Reading Rainbow was my favorite show as a little kid. It was so cool that it was just a dude saying, hey, reading is fun so go read. Truly a better type of kids television then what's around now.

But don't take my word for it.

that's depressing. The loss of the show of course, but moreso the shift in philosophy regarding educational television.

If you learn how to read watching tv then society has larger problems.

Reading Rainbow totally got me wanting to read as a kid.

I guess I have to credit a healthy dose of Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street, and my grandma for my love of reading that lead me to become an English major.

So I guess the new philosophy of education will produce more kids that will want to get an actual degree

    i agree

honestly, i think kids are less stupid than people give them credit for, and so focusing on the mechanics of reading instead of the joy of it is like focusing on the chemical composition of acrylic paint instead of showing kids artwork and then giving them brushes and telling them to have fun painting stuff

    Oh my god.

I mean, hell, by the time I was watching Reading Rainbow I already knew how to read. Fuck that, I didn't need a show teaching me how to read.

It was the love of reading and the fact that Levar seemed to love it so much. Just his rolling tones telling the story.

I'm getting kinda choked up here.

The last episode is tomorrow? I plan on watching.

Yeah man. We would often watch an episode every week or so in elementary school when we went to our library and stuff. I still have fond memories of the episode where they showed how violin's are made and the one about cranberries.

Wasn't there even an episode where they talked about Star Trek? I feel that there was for some reason, and I thought it was awesome because it was two of my favorite things at once, and fuck all those stupid other kids who beat me up for liking reading and science fiction, they had to sit through it.
