Taking battleground Liberal/NDP seats is easier then fighting the government.

Sup guys, I'm still the kingmaker that everyone courts when they aren't scapegoating Quebec.

Updated news:
- Tories blocking parliamentary proceedings on torture boondoogle and have been roundly spanked by Colvin
- Harper is running away from the MPs so we can have a "nice" Olympics
- There is no legal basis for the GG to not approve the request to prorogue, despite what you may hear from the opposition
- The Senate will be firmly stacked for the Tories after the break

You may want to update the end of the OP with what the result was.

Well it's still in a state of flux. Iggy is probably waiting for another classic Harper-esque blunder to pull the plug.

Patience, patience. EI is still mostly working, life goes on, and nobody really cares that some brown people got fucked in the ass by our government while they were in Africa. Iggy has to bide his time until Harper really fucks up to call an election.

Some people are saying that the appointment of the NDP Premier to the USA ambassador position is going to stop the NDP from toppling the government. I believe those people are wrong.

    Woo! Gary!

To be fair, though, he's the least NDP-like NDP leader I know of. Which has worked pretty well for him. Ten years in office and some high approval ratings have to mean something.

    Necro-quote from old thread:
Are you actually afraid of people from the prairie provinces? Or do you think that the general populations of Ontario & Quebec are that much more liberal and are incapable of failing?

I'm trying to understand where this position of western provinces = bad is coming from. I know they vote Conservative, and you dont like that. But I think when talking about giving provinces equal voices in the federal government, we could aspire to something grander than partisan politics and muzzling the voices of 25% of the provinces.

It has always been this way. East vs. West (vs. Quebec vs. Maritimes) has basically defined Canadian politics for quite some time.

Canada is very diverse in terms of geography, climate, and culture (to name just a few). This can make it very difficult to get along with other Canadians, politically.

The specific "Man, fuck the prairies" that was going on in the last thread though, was probably given that the prairie provinces are pretty much where all the Conservatives come from and most of the folks posting in this thread aren't too fond of Conservatives.

Not that we have any idea what to do that is any better. Fuck, I used to vote Liberal with a clear conscience. But then again, I used to be 18.

Why is it every picture of Harper where he's trying to look relate-able in some fashion turns out just fucking creepy?

The one where he's at the Stampede in the Cowboy hat and (shudder) leather vest? AH!

That one in the OP with him what looks like contemplating cooking the kitten for dinner? AH! AH!

He's like Data from Star Trek. Any time he attempts real emotion it just looks awkward and weird.

Liberals are corrupt, mildly inept, and poll-guided.

    But.

They're the middle of the road, "Canada" party. They balance the crazy socialism of the NDP with the bootstrappyness of the CPC. Also, they don't call their opponents pedophiles, which is nice.

I haven't managed to get close enough to him to check... last time I almost got taken out by his security detail for simply standing around. We had a good laugh about it afterward but it would have made quite a headline:

"Charity volunteer assaulted by PM's security"

Its one of the joys of living in Ottawa, you randomly run into the PM if you do any charity work, and he's just as creepy in person, and looks morbidly obese... those photos are pretty flattering.

    * can anyone confirm or point me to a credible source suggesting the PM and his wife are on the road to splitsville? * it's the rumor floating around here from people who know the PM better than I, but I can't find anything to verify that.

Has anyone seen some of the new efforts by the Liberals to gain ex-pat votes? I was reading an article in Macleans that mentioned Ignatieff has been sending letters to a ton of ex-pats (not even if they're Liberals), outlining some of current issues and generally being "support me", though in an indirect way.

Also, I did not know if you don't live in Canada for 5 consecutive years, you can no longer vote even if you're still a citizen.

I wonder to what degree the Liberals can afford to swing right in an attempt to court the old Progressive Conserevative vote. It'd be great if the Conservatives got pushed to the lunatic fringe, setting the new back and forth between the Liberals and NDP.

Shryke, man. "Corruption" isn't a Liberal thing. It's an "in-power" thing. The Conservatives have simply done a damn good job at painting Liberals solely with that brush, while they themselves are just as bad. I mean, the recent appointment of all those solid Conservative senators? The whole "Canadian DMCA" "townhall" meetings being stuffed with Recording Industry plants?

I don't know how well the prospect would be of the Liberals picking up significant numbers of Conservative votes. You might get some of the financial-concerned base, though even that's lessened given the economy improving on Harper's watch (even if he didn't do anything).

Um, no shit. Who the fuck ever said it was only a Liberal thing?

The point is, you leave one party in power too long, and they fester. This has happened to the Liberals. But the PC party collapsed too soon to ride that Anti-Liberal wave to power and instead married themselves to the fucking crazies in the Reform party.

It is Senate stuffing when the party in power has a reputation of refusing to appoint senators to pressure for a democratically-elected senate, then right before an election they suddenly decide to appoint party loyalists and vote-grabbing personalities to every Senate seat they can. It's completely within their power and right to do it, but it's still Senate stuffing.

Yeah I do that. Then again, for my entire voting life, there's always been a party I absolutely did not want to see in power. There was the sovereignist Bloc when I was in Québec, then when I moved to Ontario Harper took power.

Which really makes me wonder every election what the results would look like if people actually grabbed a brain and voted the way they wanted instead of trying to "strategically" vote. Perhaps the NDP and Greens would have those seats people think they should have eh.

I thought the initial rush to fill the vacancies was to throw a wrench into the coalition agreement more than anything else. I'm not saying I like it, but we all know those seats are getting filled almost solely with party loyalists. The only difference is to which party they're loyal.

It's good when it works, it's supposed to elect people who will represent the interests of your region instead of people who will work for the maximum number of popular votes. For example, Dennis Mills worked as a MP should work (worked tirelessly for his riding, advocated its issues in the house) whereas Mr Jack Layton has done um... stuff?

You could say that Alberta had some people whispering in their ear that Trudeau's efforts to minimize the energy price shock out east stopped Albertans wiping their ass with hundred dollar bills, that equalization payments have suddenly become a burden for the recently prosperous state, that the insanely rapid development of the province from dustbowl to oil empire has caused massive social rifts, that Alberta was riding on an oil and cocaine high for decades, that the American propoganda from Reagan spoke directly to poor Albertans more then any other part of Canada, and that Alberta is probably one of the most fascinating provinces to examine over the past hundred years.

Or you could go yeehaw fuck you western Canada.
