I don't remember hearing "Motherfucking Yesterday". How did that song go? Was it one of the ones that featured Clarence Walker on saxophone?
I've looked into Yoko's work as a peformance artist and she is so in her own world that, while she may have heard of the Beatles (good chance she didn't), I doubt she recognised his name personally.

So i've never really sat down and listened to this group. I've heard various songs of theirs from time to time but didn't get what was the big deal.

I feel like i'm missing out or something. It'd be pretty slick if they had most (prefererably all) of their songs on a two/three CD set, but it's probably astronomically expensive.
Check out their cd Love. It's a recent remaster of a bunch of old stuff.

No idea that was by them. I heard that song being blasted at a couple of bonfires this summer.

That song is all right, I guess. It's not as low on my list as, say, The Ballad of John and Yoko or I Want You (She's So Heavy). It just seems overrated to me.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I love almost every song on Help!. I mean, I love almost all of the Beatles' stuff, but Help! is the one consistently playing on my iPhone.

I like it a lot. It's very laid back, and ice cool in delivery. Why it's not more popular is beyond me, but hey, opinions and stuff.

Hey Jude is kinda annoying. Is this really their most popular song?

I think what really builds them up is the way they created and embodied the archetype of the "rock band": bunch of young guys, screaming fans, trajectory from humble beginnings to international fame, internal strife and breaking up relatively soon with members going on to diverse and successful solo careers. The Beatles were what a rock band is supposed to be, but I don't know if it's because they match this romantic image or because they generated it.
Perhaps you can make the argument for solo act vs band, but Elvis was (I believe) the first star (in the US?) to get that kind of screaming adoration. Fuck, he died from a drug over dose.
    Thats rock star.
Very true, but he died after the Beatles broke up . . . so they did self-destructive behavior first.

meh, without the hindsight, sexy new asian girlfriend is hardly self destructive behavior
The Beatles' problems were way deeper than Yoko Ono near the end.

    What did she do, anyway?

She was an annoying, talentless, hanger-on who showed no respect to the other members of the band and, to a degree, stripped Lennon of some individuality, since he required her input on practically everything.

She was the precursor to shrews like Courtney Love.

And I'm gonna lay down some info in this thread that, while unpopular, is true. Out of the Beatles catalog, only about 5 albums are actually worth listening to.

Rubber Soul, The Beatles, Abbey Road, Sgt Peppers, and 1, which collects all the good songs off their other releases.

Out of those five, Abbey Road and the self titled get regular spins. They put out a ton of great music, but I just find myself listening to their very best two albums.

A local Boston radio station has a contest in their morning drive time show where two "music snobs" each choose a song with a 30 second justification and listeners vote to see who wins and comes back. The reigning champion is a candidate for mayor in Boston named Sam Yoon and his choice this morning was "Back in the USSR" in honor of the Beatles: Rock Band game and because "Obama's healthcare plan last night showed he was really a socialist trying to sneak in a government takeover of health care" (paraphrased). The difference with Boston is our politicians only say that sarcastically.

So I got into the Beatles in the last year or so, despite my aunt being one of those screaming girls as a kid and always talking about them. In fact, she owns every album on vinyl up to revolver.

I deliberately held off on buying anything from them, waiting for this week. And now that it's here... I feel lost.

    1) Where to start? I haven't heard a song from them I don't like, so far.

    2) mono or stereo? The OP mentioned something screwy with the mono releases?

    3) I don't have the money to get the box set, and I've heard reviews saying it kind of sucks anyways. Still, is there a significant savings in getting it that way?

If you want the mono release it is only available as a boxed set. The first half of their albums sound better in mono, generally, but the second half stereo is generally superior (though some people claim mono is better all around). Abbey Road and Let It Be are not available in mono. Let It Be...Naked is better than Let It Be in any case.

Its because Abbey Road was recorded for stereo, the rest were not.

I really hate the way a lot of them get mixed, Rubber Soul and Revolver are really bad about it. "Oh lets just dump vocals in one channel and everything else in the other and it'll sound great"
It was being used as a goofy novelty more than anything. Even the new stereo remasters do it.

I didn't know there were rules when it comes to record recommendations.

I know it's a faux pas to unwittingly respond with the name of a greatest hits collection if someone asks you your favorite album from a group, but that's hardly the case.

If you want to get into the Beatles, then buy those five releases and you'll have a large collection of their essential catalog.

Well, probably because it's a big slab of doom metal that appeared before and directly influenced Black Sabbath.

There's all sorts of awesome in that song that appeared well before the respective genres you could pick out of it.

Sgt. Peppers is probably my least favourite Beatles album (that I've heard, never bought Rubber Soul). Can't understand all the praise it gets. Abbey Road though...ahh...What an utterly fantastic album. At the end of American Beauty when Elliott Smith sang Because I'm pretty sure a small part of my brain exploded from the awesome.

Here Comes the Sun, Help and Back in the USSR (one of only two songs I'll actually do at a kareoke) are probably my favourite songs though. Although it's kinda hard to choose one since there's so many great ones...

What I'm saying is I don't understand how anyone can actually dislike The Beatles. Not be fussed about them sure, but actually think they're bad?

Although, as Blindpsychic said, the way they did Stereo can do suck a dick.

I usually include Sgt Peppers as a general nod to their studio work. It's great. Only problem I really have is that they were beaten to the punch with the whole studio thing by Zappa and the Beach Boys.

    But really.

Day in the Life is an absolutely awesome song. Strawberry Fields should have been included on that album.

There's only two songs on Sgt. Pepper's that I think are amazing: She's Leaving Home and A Day in the Life. I understand why it's so highly regarded, no doubt it blew minds when it first came out, but to me, the rest of the songs are pretty 'meh'. Keep in mind, for The Beatles a 'meh' song is one of the greatest songs ever by pretty much any other band.

Actually, I take that back, the title track is pretty rad too. And I'd probably like With a Little Help From My Friends more if Joe Cocker didn't do it 100000 times better.
