So last Friday I spent the afternoon teaching my 9 year old sister how to paint.

We set up a still life in the studio, grabbed some paint and some canvas and got to work. 4 hours later we both came out with completed paintings.

We started with vine charcoal drawings, very simple and straightforward.

Some constructive criticism (I was surprised at how well she took suggestions and criticism without getting discouraged and frustrated)

We got into painting after about half and hour to 45 minutes of drawing.

Can I come over? I really need to start doing some traditional work. It's not that I'm dissatisfied with digital, but I just don't feel arty enough doing it. I tried an art beret and an aloof asshole attitude, but it's just not the same.

And for a 9 year old, that's a pretty kick ass first attempt at still life.....actually it's a kick ass first attempt for anyone of any age.

Yeah, she did a good job.

It's because I'm an amazing teacher.

Wow, I'm surprised you were able to get your sister to do something that requires patience. I remember she was a little ball of energy. This is awesome though.

She did a good job with the highlights, but I feel like she could have used some darker colors for the shadows. She needs to draw from life some more as well, since the bowl and the stand have some problems with their forms.

I kid, this is obviously great. I was pretty pleased when I managed to get my 8 year old brother to actually draw something before putting paint on it, so I can also respect the fact that you got her to go through the entire process.

Nice, Dee. I like the rendering in the fruit.

I really hope your sister stays interested too.
