If you can't capture keeps, you miss on the whole point of the end game.

Good to know. It seems pretty damn harsh to have the main point of the endgame be scheduled so strictly, though.

EDIT: With a broad idea of prime time, though, it shouldn't be too bad. If it goes from 6 - 12, for example, I could actually conceivably participated for 5 hours. Assuming being part of only a fraction of the experience acceptable, this would rock.

God fuck, I just want to play this so badly. C'mon, NCSoft, you nearly have me!

it really isn't an issue as a soloplayer looking for a server, the problem you run into is as an established guild/clan/legion from another game with a diversity of timezones to cater to migrating to aion.

Having a window of increased opportunity one can argue adds a sense of persistence to the world and should you cap a fortress you have the opportunity to defend it should it become contested the next day.

This way a fortress will actually be fought over , as opposed to "well fuck it let them have it we'll just cap it when they go to bed." or having some taiwan crew just roll through everything while I'm asleep and cap everything uncontested.

I think it will definitely fracture some legions up a bit and will make it tough on oceanic players which is a shame but I'd rather deal with that than actually have to fight over a fortress , win , cap it , then have some off-hour crew roll through everyday uncontested and amass easy AP after your own hard fought gain.

I agree it is contrived and less than ideal.

Yeah, I've been reading the debate (if one can call such chaotic howling a debate) on AionSource, and I'm starting to appreciate the value of the system as proposed and also the value of a 24/7 all-is-fair-in-love-and-war system.

I don't care too much either way as long as I can participate. I'd hate to arbitrarily miss out on a large percentage of the game because of scheduling reasons, something which is always quite sensitive between my work hours and time zone.

I'd like to be able to play with PA, but that's secondary to getting to play at all.

It's not like PVP in the Abyss is going to completely shut down if there aren't contested fortresses. I expect it to be very Emain-esque.

I keep on getting mixed messages on this. Some people are saying that fortress-capturing may as well BE the game and others are saying that it's merely a (albeit, very large) fraction of the experience.

Judging by general reactions in AionSource, I'm willing to be that one way or another I'm going to be invested in how this turns out. Aion looks amazing, but there are other MMOs available where I can enjoy a more significant percentage of the experience. Well, depending on how this turns out, I mean.

I saw an Aion Wiki link aways back so I figured I'd remind people about this link. Now obviously as the game develops someone might usurp this, but during the CBT I found the official Aion PowerWiki unrivaled for quest information. The maps were detailed step-by-step guides, often with pictures. If you're like me and you just want to blast through levels 1-25 as fast as fucking possible, this site is golden. Though at the end of the last closed beta it was still a bit thin as far as the 20s go...

Honestly during the whole OB I never had any real lag to speak of. Even when I'd go into Sanctum and dozens of people were hawking their wares by the teleporter it sill ran pretty good. A hiccup here and there but nothing big.

After the update saturday night (1.5.0.5) there seemed to be even less lag, at least in the starter zone when I was dorking around with a Priest.

Yeah a router on a major pipe exploded. They didn't have much if any control over it besides bitching at the controlling ISP.

After that got resolved, I never lagged enough to be noticeable. Ran very smoothly pingwise.

Yes, a pre-order will open you up to the Early Launch. Though I would advise doing it soon just to make sure the information goes through in time. For the CBT weekends you needed 2-3 days advance in order for Clerical to get you your passcode.

I'm starting to think this whole thing with the fortress schedules may have been blown out of proportion by the kids at AionSource. I mean, NCSoft couldn't possibly be releasing a game where the main endgame content is only accessible to people who work "normal" hours and/or live in one of two timezones... Could they?

Also, regardless, there's no way official forums for an MMO could blow something out of proportion!

No, the schedules weren't released. Right now I'm sitting here wondering what "in line with the primetime of the servers timezone" means. Does that mean I can only participate if I'm available to play between 6 PM - 10 PM? I don't know. Lots of people don't know. People in other time zones want to know what this means for them. People who work late night shifts want to know what this means for them.

And this whole time NCSoft is being silent about it and vague on when any real information will come.

The schedules have not been released as of this writing (but are anxiously awaited by many)!

If NC West uses the same server code as the Korean and Chinese versions, two to four fortresses (out of the total of nine) will ONLY be available for capture between 8PM and 10PM local server time. When taken, fortresses are "locked out" for two hours minimum. At 10PM, the ones that were available are locked down and two to four random fortresses are available for the next two hours, until midnight local server time. Note that this system does not prevent a single fortress from being available for the entire four hour block, but it is unlikely. At midnight, all fortresses are locked until 8PM the next day. Supposedly this maintains a feeling of "persistence" to the word (i.e. the world power picture when you log out at midnight is still the same when you log in the next evening).

That's how it works in the already released asian version(s) of the game. And since NCsoft has already said that servers will be "East" or "West" coast time, it isn't a huge stretch to assume that they will be doing the same for the NA release, but based on two specific time zones.

That's why so many of us (myself included) are waiting for the fortress schedule. I'm based in the Pacific time zone, so a "west" server makes perfect sense for me. But my legion seems to favor a "east" server, which would pretty much preclude me from ever participating in end-game fortress raids. (I have a full time job and rarely sit down to play games prior to 8PM Pacific -- 11PM eastern.)

So, I've been doing a lot of reading up on this game, but one thing I have yet to discover is the reason between the war between the Asmodians and the Elyos. Were they distinct factions before the Baluar-induced cataclysm, or is that a result of their seperation upon said cataclysm? Why are they not allied against the Baluar, which strikes me as the more "evil" of the three factions

As I understand it, the two human/daeva factions are somewhat allied against the Balaur, at least insofar as they each recognize that the Balaur will kill them both indiscriminately.

Like so many alliances of convenience throughout history and fiction, however, when you remove external threats, sooner or later there will be conflict. Someone will find a reason to hate, or invent one. Whether it's something as trivial as who did or didn't slaughter this or that legion, or something really irreconcilable like back hair issues ...the shanking will start, and it won't stop until the Balaur come back and remind everyone that there's a real foe out there.

Part of the story, though it doesn't totally explain the war in my opinion, is that aether is leaking out from the Abyss and will destroy the world unless it is stopped. The only way to stop it? Destroy one of the two remaining stumps of the Tower of Eternity (one on Elysea, the other on Asmodae).

There was a breaking of factions during the peacemaking meeting with the Balaur. Those who ended up as Asmodean were against peace and slew one of the Balaur leaders at the meeting, which caused this whole mess. The Elyos had favored peace. Time passed, and when the Elyos hopped through a portal and ended up in Asmodae, one dude was rude towards the Asmodeans, so now they're at war with each other.

I really wouldn't know how to roleplay the Elyos because they seem to be peaceful, and yet they're busy waging war on their brethren.

The lore can be read here: http://na.aiononline.com/en/about/lore/?src=hdr

Brief history of Aion in one post or less:

Hey, I'm a God! But I take the form of a TOWER that lies on the inside of a planet, each end connected into the dirt! I'll make a lot of life and populate the inside sphere of this world! Oh, bunnies, sheep, humans and Dragons! What could go wrong? Whoops, the Dragons turned evil and instead of being protectors are evolving and power hungry. They're killing everything and demanding I give them godlike power that rivals my own! What to do? I know, I'll get all the humans under my Aura of Coolness Shield to protect them, but really I've turned them into my private army to fight the Dragons, now the Balaur. And now, since giving divine power worked so well before, I'll make 12 super duper warriors, Serephim Lords, to lead the raised humans, known as Daevas, in my side of the war. YAY!

You know, as a Serephim Lord, I've been fighting the Balaur for a thousand years already. It's never gonna stop at this rate. Maybe we should consider peace talks. Let's vote at Serephim Council. All in favor, 7 sane Godlings. All opposed, 5 super pissed off militant asses. Let's open the shield and give peace a chance! Well, the Balaur Lords seem willing and trusting, what could go wrong? OH NO! The super violent pissed off Godling killed one of the Balaur lords AFTER we dropped our shield and instigated a massive attack by the betrayed Balaur! There's no stopping them, they've broken our lines! The tower has been destroyed by their attack! Damnnit, pissed off guy, you and your subordinates are Asshats! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! Wait! The two most powerful of the Serephim Lords are draining their life force to preserve the majority of the land near each end of the tower! We're NOT gonna die! Yay! Oh, and we on the lower half of the broken world are getting so much sunshine and goodness in a world without Dragons. I LOVE LIFE!

Grr, I'm a violent pissed off Godling and I can't imagine what went wrong when I assassinated just one Balaur Lord, leaving the rest to lead their armies against us. After all, peace is for dorks, even if picking a fight at an enormous disadvantage leads to all our deaths. But since my guys are getting fewer Balaur attacking us, and our lines are holding, nothing could EVER go wrong. What?! The tower shattered, those other guys just F-ed us all, because it obviously wasn't my fault! Screw you guys! Ah, damnnit, for some reason unknown to us we're not all dead. But wow, the tilt for the upper half of the world isn't letting any sunlight in. I guess we're all just gonna have to evolve all brooding and dickish, because that's MY personality. Plus talons and tails are cool!

I'm an Elyos Daeva, and after 700 years of peace, life is good! Hey! What is this? It's a portal! Let's lead a squad of people inside to scout the uncharted lands! Hey, who are you people, you look ashen skinned and broodish!

I'm an Asmodian Lord, one of the Godlings that fought to protect you assholes who couldn't fight properly, because it was obviously not my fault the tower was destroyed. Now, I'm gonna punch you in face *SMACK* and demand you denounce the Serephim Lords you worship as gods and say it was all their fault, because I have to deflect blame somehow! And all that brooding has warped my memory. So insult your gods in front of me and my soldiers, outnumbering you 3 to 1!

Screw you Asmodians, it was your fault! And I'm not gonna let you call my Godlings assholes, you douchbag!

    THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS!

    *swords clanking* *Daevas dying*

As an Elyos, I was somehow able to get away from that deathtrap, and a few other of my pretty friends. Oh look, we're in a city all of a sudden. How improbable. Let's kill some of the red-contact wearing, black eyeliner painting, back hair covered, gaudy talon ring sporting, emo fucktards! Civilian murder is fun, and just, because they're different and they murdered all my friends, possibly giving me instant PTSD. REVENGE! Oh no, there is a spear in my back from the soldiers that caught up with me. Ah, sweet death...*gurgle*

As an Asmodian, I'm outraged by this, because they don't have the right to kill people just because we started a war.

As an Elyos, I'm outraged by this, because those bastards are now declaring a war of genocide on us. And since they started it all by murdering our scouting party, I guess we're just going to have to make peace with them. Just as soon as we've murdered them all into submission!

As the combined wise man community for both the Elyos and Asmodians, I declare that all the life force of both lands is being sucked out through the stump of the tower in the center of our half-a-world because of the other guys' tower stump. And it's all getting pulled into the Abyss, the empty space between our worlds where the Balaur live. If we want to survive, we're going to have to ANNIHILATE the tower stump on the other half-a-world to stop the Lifeforce leak, thus condemning the other race to extinction. Now we have a tangible purpose to our war aside from blind stupidity!

But I'm pretty sure all of this would have been solved if the Asmodians would just say, "Hey, your world is really nice. Much better than ours. How about you let our culture take shelter on your world, evacuating our own, and blow up the Tower on the other side? Then we can become one people again and find a way to coexist that doesn't involve sticking pointy things through other people's bellies." But that's not gonna happen, because the Asmodians are too caught up in denial, brooding, and trying to look like bad asses to think straight.

"We shall Capture the Flag. We shall go on to the time limits.
We shall fight in Hoth, we shall fight on the spaceports
and the orbital stations, we shall fight with growing confidence
and growing strength in the instances, we shall defend our Republic,
    whatever the cost may be.
We shall Re-Spawn on the beaches, we shall camp the landing grounds,
    we shall PvP Flag in the fields and in the streets, we shall gank in the hills;
    we shall never uninstall."

That is an amazing and excellent synopsis.

I would also like to point out that your proposed "one world" solution would never work because they Elyos would never condescend to let the Asmodian filth sully the beautiful half-planet that is their birthright.
