Building Better Worlds

Weyland-Yutani (Brought to you by Wal-Mart) has discovered a Terran-class Paradise world, perfect for an idyllic new colony, without all the hassle of terra-forming. This planet’s location is proprietary, and in the interest of their colonists, they’ve kept the location secret to keep out squatters.

What’s more, they’ve developed and built the world’s most advanced and largest colony ship ever created. Instead of the costly and inefficient multiple mediocre AI’s currently being used in autonomous units, WY has designed the world’s most advanced AI, called Berry, right into the ship, enormously increasing the capabilities of ship’s systems and units. This increased capability and efficiency has decreased actual crew requirements to only three…A Captain, Executive Officer and Engineer, leaving valuable room for colonists.

Actual colonists have been chosen by various means, all free. A provisional council has been set up prior to departure to eliminate any confusion in the critical period after landing. WY has asked only that a moderate parcel of land be set off for its own use. Other than this, the company makes no demands of the colonists or colony.

The council was formed from quite a few interests, Secularists, Zealots, Socialists, and Libertarians. Of course, everyone knows there are WY Agents scattered amongst the council.

You wake groggily from cold-sleep to see one of the ship’s security ‘bots hovering over your couch. Something’s wrong here. The digital readout tells you it’s at least 3 weeks too early for landfall.

“Come with me please. This is an emergency. Your cooperation is required.”, the ‘bot spits outs in a monotone splatter of electronic noise. The smooth, silky voice of Berry is gone. Something is terribly wrong.

You are gathered with the rest of the Council, in the cramped Crew Galley and Lounge.

Captain Yaska has seen better days. His skin is ashen, and his movements are shaky. The situation he describes is even worse.

Genies (Genetically modified humans – outlawed for three hundred years on pain of death) have infiltrated the ship, and worse, sabotaged Berry.

All higher level functions and defense systems are offline, or secured from crew manipulation. Berry seems to have shut down all upper orders of AI functionality. The Bridge, Medical, Security, and Engineering Control are sealed, leaving only the Berthing Areas and Mechanical Access open for crew use.

And…there’s something loose in the ship, not human. Something fast, and very not friendly. The XO and CHENG were killed by it, cut in half. The Captain was wounded, probably fatally without Medical access, apparently by some kind of acid.

    ProBoards

We will create ProBoards for each faction and for the sub-groups. There will be a link in your PM to any ProBoards that are appropriate for you. Register under your PA name, please.

    Day End

Oops, almost forgot. End of day will be at 9pm Eastern Whatever Time (I can't be bothered to remember if we're in DST or not). Posts time stamped at 8:59 count, ones time stamped 9:00 do not. No "day closed" post will be made. Expect on the order of an hour for narrations.

Sorry to make it so early, but I'm up early on weekdays these days, and I do need to try to get at leat 7 hours of sleep a night. :(

    The Player Base

The council is made up of two pairs of opposing factions, who see this emergency as a perfect opportunity to make sure that their ideals are implemented in the governance of the colony. To that end, they each want to remove the influence of their opponents.

Scattered among those factions are WY Agents and Genie conspirators. Each of these groups has their own win condition separate from the faction they belong to. The game ends when either of these groups is eliminated.

Win Conditions (GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!)

The WY agents have a win condition that includes (but is not limited to) eliminating all genie conspirators. Conversely, the genie conspirators have a win condition that includes (but is not limited to) eliminating all of the WY agents.

One way or another, the game is over when either of these groups is eliminated.

If at game over, neither group has entirely fulfilled its win conditions, then the faction who has the largest lead over its opposing faction wins.

For example, if at the point when the last genie is eliminated the WY agents haven’t fulfilled the rest of their win condition, and the faction pairs have populations as follows A-4, B-2, C-8, D-9 (assuming A & B are opposing, and C & D are opposing), then A wins because 4-2 is a bigger lead than 9-8.

    Voting

There will be three types of votes in this game. Death, Election, and Resource Use. In all cases, the last vote by a particular person will be counted. Explicit retractions are only necessary if you aren’t going to make a new vote before day end. Otherwise, your new vote will be considered a retraction of the prior one.

    Death votes

This is a new mechanic, and it is quite different from what you are used to, so read this part carefully.

There will be no death vote on night one. However, on each night after that, the council may kill anywhere from 0 to n/3 of its members, where n is the number of surviving council members. How do they do this?

Each person may make a single vote. However, that vote may be a red vote FOR killing someone in particular or a lime vote AGAINST killing them. Votes against killing a particular person will subtract from the votes for killing them.

In order to be killed, a person needs to have a net total votes of 2, with at a minimum 3 total votes for them to die. EVERYONE who meets this criteria will die that night.

    Examples
    • 2 people vote to kill narvinye, nobody votes against killing him. There haven’t been a minimum of 3 total votes, so he doesn’t die.
    • 5 people vote to kill narvinye, 4 people vote against killing him. His net total votes is 1, so he doesn’t die.
    • 5 people vote to kill narvinye, 3 people vote against killing him. His net total votes is 2, so he dies.

So, yeah… this could be a bloodbath and over in 3 days if you guys want it to be, or it could be a stalemate and go for 2 weeks. It’s up to you. Remember that each person may make one red vote OR one lime vote on a given night, not both. So choose carefully.

    Election votes

On odd-numbered nights, there will be an election for “acting captain” (spoiler alert: the real captain dies :p ) That acting captain will have control of certain resources that will come into play as the game progresses. Acting captain votes are made in yellow.

The acting captain will be elected for two nights, and be protected from death from any source the night he is elected and the following night. He will be able to act in this capacity on the two nights following his election.

For example, if narvinye is elected acting captain night 1, he is protected on nights 1 & 2, and he acts on nights 2 & 3. On night 3 another election is held where either he is re-elected or another person is elected to replace him.

The acting captain will make his actions by public post in the main thread, and the results will be given in the narration.

    Resource votes

From time to time, certain resources will be discovered that can be used to help the council to defend themselves. Unfortunately, these resources are limited, and some tough choices will need to be made as to how to allocate them. On any given night, there will be from 0-3 decisions that need to be made in this respect. Each person may make one vote on each decision. These votes will be made in cyan

I'm very interested in this, I just don't know the rules. And I would prefer the "genetic colonists" to be Synthetics instead if possible; it's keeping more in theme with the first two films.
If there is room... !Sign Up

The logic for that choice goes like this:

The science of the that universe is obviously up to genetically modifying human-beings (think Alien Resurrection), yet it does not seem to be used (probably more because it wasn't needed by the script, rather than any well thought out reasoning, but work with me here).

Now Synthetics ARE used, and nearly perfected, and accepted parts of the world, and given the overall experience with them, not likely at all to be a cohesive group of saboteurs. Maybe one in a million goes haywire.

So genetically augmented humans would seem to be REALLY taboo, but possible, which gives us a perfect group of antagonists.

    In short, the Genies stay.

Sorry all, ship's schedule changes more than EB's personalities. I swear, I'll never accept orders to an amphib again...

The reason you cannot kill/remove the Captain by force is because Berry won't permit it...as in very capable security/combat robots (I SOOOOO want to say Droids) protect him.

However, because of some kind of glitch, she refuses to use those same capabilities to remove whatever threat is about. She has placed that responsibility on you, while removing most high-powered resources.

Anything you can cobble together yourselves is fair game. Hence the parts. They've been used to cobble together and repair a broken security robot that was ignored by Berry. Some functionality has been restored.

As far as your vote mechanic, it simulates you actually getting together and mobbing someone out the airlock. It takes about three people to do it, unopposed...with opposition, it takes more
    .

Again, for both of us, we apologize for the lack of polish. We had planned on having more time around game time to run this with the effort and ambiance (sp?) it deserves, but life has intervened.

Clarification: The OP says that each player may cast a lime vote or a red vote. Are players required to cast one or the other every day?

I just feel like we don't have enough to go on right now to make a vote yet.

No one is required to cast a vote...you are not forced to try to throw someone out the airlock, nor forced to interfere with another group's attempt to do so.
    Nerissa wrote: »
Is the Council made up of the entire player base? If not, how many people are on the council? Is it a fixed number, or a percentage of the player base?

The council is the entire player base. When the shit hit the fan, only the council was awakened. The remainder of the colonists are still in cold-sleep and will not be involved in the game.
    Nerissa wrote: »
    Also,

Do we need to vote on what parts to use or does the acting captain decide?

You need to vote for one part in each pair. Once the resource is used, the captain gets to decide who to aim the resulting item at.

Resource votes should be made in cyan
    Nerissa wrote: »
    Clarification:

A question on resource use came up on one of the faction boards, and I realized I wasn't particularly clear in the PMs that I sent out, so here's a better explaination.

The resources found are limited, and some resources (spare parts, etc.) can be used for one of several purposes. Thus, the council's choices for using those resources are limited by others (you can only choose one of each pair, because the uses for each pair shares some other resource that there is only one of.)

Each faction knows one other use for one of the listed resources other than the one in the main thread, that is not dependant on the same other parts.

So, if the group as a whole votes to use, for example, the 7603i Circuits, then the faction who knows an alternate use for them does not get their resource, but the faction who knows an alternate use for the Tri-Ion Power Packs does, because the group as a whole can't use both resources.
    Nerissa wrote: »
Does the Captain need to announce his actions in the thread before they take place? Even if he does, he can announce them at the last minute and still manage to flummox the evil agents on board.

Yes, the acting captain needs to announce his actions in the thread before day end for that day. However, you are correct in that he can certainly wait until 8:59 if he so desires.

There will be no captain's action today because (a) there is not yet an acting captain and (b) the final choice on which resources to use hasn't been made.

The acting captain you elect tonight will have actions on days 2 & 3, the one you elect on day 3 will have actions on days 4 & 5, etc.
    Nerissa wrote: »
    Clarifications Responses:

Resource-related abilities are available once per night, beginning the night after the decision is made which resource to use, for the duration of the game. The Acting Captain at the time declares who they will be "aimed at" publicly in this thread. The results (in the case of info gathering) will be a part of the narration, not given privately to the Captain. This pretty much exactly mirrors Vader's powers in the Galactic Senate game.

The Acting Captain may not be killed on either the night he is elected or the following night. Berry still has enough functionality to protect whoever is nominally in charge.

And yes, if you all somehow manage a tie, it will stand as such. Win conditions work just like the Galactic Senate game. So...

First, either WY agents or Genie conspirators must be wiped out.

If they are both wiped out on the same night (odds are against, but I suppose possible) then neither fills their win condition.

If the surviving group fills the other part of their win condition, they win.

If they don't (or both are wiped out simultaneously) then the win possibility trickles down to the factions, and the determination is made from there.

Also, I apologize, there is a bit of back story to this setup that never made it into the Day 0 narration. I'll try to fit as much of it as possible into tonight's narration so you can get a better idea of what is SUPPOSED to be going on here.

And finally, before my PM box overflows, yes, I've been made aware of an irregularity in the player list. It was unintentional, and we're working on what to do about it.
    Nerissa wrote: »
Ugh, and dammit, one more clarification for the faction PMs, although I think everyone is interpreting it correctly (mostly, I think, because we've got so many who played the Galactic Senate game, so they would, correctly in this case, assume it works the same way). I'll preempt the question anyway.

Each faction may kill OR investigate each night, so you vote on your faction board to kill narvinye OR to investigate Nerissa, and whichever action / person combination gets the most votes is what happens.

Clarification: There is a green vote and a red vote today for kills, but we can only choose one?

The green & red are not actually separate votes, they're votes for opposing actions.

Yes, you may only choose one or the other. Either (red) vote to kill someone, or (green) counter someone else's vote to kill someone.

Once again, EVERYONE who has at least 3 red votes and at least two more red votes than green votes on a given day will die, not just whoever is in first place.

I suggest you keep careful count of them. :)
    Nerissa wrote: »
    Wildcat wrote: »
I'm happy to do that. !Withdraw ShadowThomas (I presume as we can't use green for that purpose that will be sufficient?)
Please make retractions bold and the same color as the vote you retracted (so, retracting a red vote should be in red and retracting a green vote will be green). When I count votes, I scan through the entire thread pretty quickly and only stop to look at posts with pretty colors in them, so I would miss the retraction if it's not in one of those colors.

And no, this is not a request to sprinkle your posts with rainbow colors. :p

Ooh also do guarding actions get shown in the narration?
    Maaaayyyybe

Most likely, the group / faction performing a guard would get a response regarding the guard having actually protected against an attack, but the general narration only would if it were an action that the public would necessarily know about. So, if the captain were to acquire guardian powers at some point, the results of that guard would certainly appear in the general narration. Any other guards would only appear in the general narration if they were particularly messy.

It is a fun forum-based game explained in the OP here and the very basic Wiki here.

New faces are always welcome, so feel free to sign up even if you don't know a lot. Since this is a faction game, you will have teammates to help you out. The only thing it requires is a bit of time every day to keep up with what's going on and participate.

I just saw this movie again, literally yesterday, so I'll sign up.

We rented it last week so we could have it fresh in our minds. Right at the peak action part of the movie, a spider or bug of some sort got under my shirt and started crawling on my arm (not sure what kind, I didn't actually see it, but from the feel, it was about the size of a fly)

To say I was a bit twitchy for the rest of the night would be an understatement.

Didn't help that the book I was reading at the time featured spider-like aliens that climbed on the back of human hosts and stuck a probe into their brain to control them.

Oh, and I'm not certain what the player limit is going to be off hand -- we've been looking at ways to scale it so we don't have to limit at 40, but we want to keep some reserves too. That decision will probably be made right before the start of the game. I can say for sure that it won't be less than 40.
