I dl'd the lost and the damned from GW's site. It does seem a rather weak list without CSM support, compared to IG. Traitors are IG with -1 ld, for +2 points.

Are there any advantages to using them besides fluff? Guardsmen are already a pain in the ass at LD7 if they have no command bubble to support them, LD6 without the benefit of a vox or iron discipline system seems awfully risky.

They are required in order to take IG tanks. They work like Skaven clanrats, you can take IG units for every unit of traitors you have. You can pay extra points for a higher ld sgt, I believe.

They automatically have frag 'nade (not worth it, they suck in melee), and can infiltrate (so so, but not great on a unit that can only take one assault weapon)

I made mine just because I love skaven. The Hrud picture in the rulebook never made me think "skaven" untill I heard that online.

Nah, every addition to 40k since Dark Eldar has been really lame. They need to go back and flesh out existing armies. More ork variety. More IG variety. (there are millions of worlds)

Alright well I got the new DA codex and a command squad, so here's my new core force:
    newcorenb9.jpg

I decided to go with a combi-plasma gun instead of storm bolter for my company master, and though it seems perfectly clear in the rules I just wanted to make sure he can indeed have the power weapon and the combi-plasma gun, correct? The only real reason I ask is because the two new blisters for company commanders have either a power sword or combi weapon and you'd have to convert the heck out of them to fit the other in his other hand.

Also, here's the assembled command squad for a little later when I know how to play/want to play with more points:
    newhqdh5.jpg

They're quite customized for close combat, and go like this:
    Base cost: 105
Upgrades on two veterans: melta bombs/power weapon, melta bombs/power fist.
One model is upgraded to an apothecary.
One model is upgraded to a standard bearer.
One model is upgraded to a company champ.

The standard bearer and apoth are always shown as having a chainsword (or close combat blade) and bolt pistol. My question(s) is this- Can the champ, standard bearer or apothecary do the plasma pistol upgrade? And also, can the apothecary and standard bearer upgrade their chainswords into plasma/melta/flamer guns?

If they can't do the plasma pistol upgrade then I'll probably smack those on the power weapon/power fist 'normal' vets.

Tyranids were more interesting when they had living swords and such. They are way too Gigeresque now. I mean, I know thats what they were originally based off, but they are closer to the source material now than they used to be, which is just lazy.

That... really doesn't make any sense. Their weapons (with the exception of Claws and Talons) are still explicitly described as being seperate living creatures that are grafted to the nid in question.

I was of the same opinion when I converted up an all-Xenos "First Among Equals" Honor Guard squad for my Tau. Even though the Tau are digitigrade with hooves, it's barely noticeable, and all of the intelligent life forms out there can't all be either bipedal or 6-limbed Tyranids.

Among the models are an Etherial and two 'bodyguard' Tau (hey, some are more Equal than others, y'know?), a Kroot, Vespid, and Human as the more standard, a head & tail swap with a Chameleon Skink, a Harpy-to-Pteradactyl kitbash, a Skink Shaman covered in feathers and looking a lot like a Skexis from The Dark Crystal. That covers all of the bipeds.

For the more unique conversions I made a snake-bodied 'Hrud' (I blame the Alien Legion comic books), a tentacled squiddie tripod made using mostly plastic Spore Mines, a 'Demiurg' with arms which branch into two forearms each, which split again for fingers, and four two-toed hooves to stand on to carry the theme to it's logical conclusion.

My favorite conversion is the insect/spider. I was thinking of including a centaur-like critter, but the design of centaurs always bothered me... putting the head, arms, and vital organs all the way at the front without any protective bone or horn just seemed silly to me. So the 'reverse centaur', with the torso at the back was the way I wanted to go, with shaved down tyranid parts and Lizarman legs, and the head off of an Old, old Nurgle champion. Six legs, two arms aiming a rifle down the length of the body, and still fitting (mostly) on a regular round base.

I'll post pics when I get batteries for the camera.

There are plenty of other races in 40k, check out Rogue Trader, and the inquisitor line.

Thing is, none of them are major powers. And you can't keep introducing ANCIENT EVIL THREATS, or you get shit like the necrons.

Well, they don't have to be major powers. I'd be perfectly fine with a new army confined to a single planet and then some McGuffin device that makes the planet irresistible to the other races.

So I have totally been working on that frog king thing. I know it's not 40k, but screw you homps, as all I'm doing is basing it and painting it which is relevant.

I found the lid to some container in my basement and I decided it would make a pretty reasonable base. My next step was to grab some insulation foam and cut it down to fill the insides and create a slope on which I could pour water effects to create a sort of 'pond' on one side.

Then I coated the whole thing with bondo to make it harder and prevent primer sprays from eating it alive, followed by a layer of elmers glue and water and some rocks, and another layer of the elmers and water once that had tried to make sure everything held steady. The 'rocks' are just bits of wood mulch I found in a plant pot around the house.

    frog1.jpg

    frog2.jpg

    frog3.jpg

    frog4.jpg

    frog5.jpg

In the interest of painting these things properly, I'm going to have to work on this in a bit of a convoluted method. I'm going to leave the frogs separate from the base to get at their angles a bit easier, and paint the base separately as well. Once that's done, I'm probably going to glue them down to the base and try concealing the seams between the edge of the frog bases and the display base by putting some extra sand and rocks down there.

This is mostly a painting project for me, really. The models are more than adequate for what I need, and my girlfriend loves frogs - she actually has a couple fire-belly frogs of her own, and I'm going to be trying to emulate their patterns onto these guys.

Yes for the Commander, and I'd say yes for giving the specialists special weapons. The list doesn't say those upgrades are limited to non-specialist models, only that no more than two can have them.

The only thing is that there's a serious lack of head variety, especially since I'm not using any helmeted cadian heads at all. I've got a few extra heads from the handgunners and state troops sprue, but I'm thinking of bits ordering a few generics from bwbits just so I don't have too many duplicates.

The Xenology book is great for ideas like this. One of the races, that would be perfect for the conversion minded hobbiest, were these weird sphere things (that sound like they could be a manifestation of the remains of an ekdar god(s) that tend to cluster around warp machinery on space ships, and attack by materializing shadows. they could work really well by using the Tyranid ruleset, IMO.

Hi guys... I'm here with a request... i'm getting desperate...

I need a good tutorial for painting red. I normally do Tau and IG models, but i'm doing a falcon grav tank for someone as a present, and i've never understood how you do that red shading/highlights (like this pic : http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/vampirh.htm ) now i realise that's airbrushed for smoothness, but I'm just trying to work out what kind of paint layers to follow, an idea of what to lay down first and what to bring it up to... i would imagine blood red is so thin that it would suck for this kind of job? . I need to get working on it soon, and I really want to try the red... so if anyone has a good tut i'd really appreciate it, if not i'll just have to go back to the green colour scheme... but it's just not as nice!

so as not to derail the thread entirely... here's some recent work :

As the robes are a sign of rank the only DAs in my list that will have them will be Sgts and heavy weapon specialists. The Dev squad guys I already built before deciding this and all are un-robed. Anyone have ideas about what I should do with them? Right now I'm thinking of just saving them in case I want to expand my army and need more Sgts or a Vet squad.
