Graphics card problem?

KhavallKhavall British ColumbiaRegistered User regular
So for the most part, my computer runs fine.

However, in some newer games(specifically Battlefield Pacific and Batman: AA), the screen will go into a solid color and then the computer will freeze. Sometimes it'll go solid, and the GPU will restart, but sometimes it'll just freeze and I'll have to restart.

The card is an 8800GT, and since half the time it reports as a GPU crashing I'm thinking that's the problem.

The only thing is when I was building the computer, I didn't quite install the CPU fan right the first time, so it was running a little hot for the first few days... once it shut down because of it. I've had no other problems with it, but I've always been a little nervous about it. Also a while back the PSU blew, and it seems that nothing else was affected, but again it's something that I always keep in my mind.

Also, I've got two monitors hooked up to the computer.

So would a GPU replacement fix this, is the GPU overheating or something here, or is this a problem elsewhere?

Since you've got a dual screen setup, try running SpeedFan (http://download.cnet.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html) or something similar on the other screen while you're playing. This should give you a decent sense of your GPU/CPU temps when the machine locks up.
