Yea, I am now a Jew if that's the case.

“Every time we walk along a beach some ancient urge disturbs us so that we find ourselves shedding shoes and garments or scavenging among seaweed and whitened timbers like the homesick refugees of a long war.” - Loren Eiseley
Guess what we get for dinner at the Hillel?
Cold pasta salad.
Falafel.
Hummus.
Lox.
Herring.
Gefilte fish.
Basically, every single food that I find unbearably disgusting. That's what's for dinner.
What does Celly eat for dinner?
Cheesecake and blueberry pie. Fuck gefilte fish.
fasting every other day and eating twice as much on your food days apparently has huge health benefits, particularly in regards to longevity
at least in rats
I'm not sure about that specific regimen, but the really low caloric intake diet hasn't been proven in humans or any other primates, and it can fuck with your brain

That one's kinda a "no shit?" situation.
Eating about what your body burns just to avoid rotting away isn't a good idea.
The fast and gorge thing seems counterintuitive, but so do lots of things.

the amount of people who use 'well you wouldn't expect it to work!' as reasoning why something would work is pretty large

Makes sense to me: if an organism eats just enough to stay alive (in lab conditions, so they don't have to exert energy looking for the food), shouldn't the body default to the lowest possible operating mode, slowing down metabolism and thus wear on the body?

but the body has heaps of defence mechanisms that aren't completely necessary and I could easily imagine them being switched off if it's being semi-starved

Yeah, people say stupid things. What's new?
Saying "well duh" and then "yeah but that's what you wouldn't expect" in the same post is silly.

There's a significant difference between saying something must be true because it makes no sense at all, and saying that something isn't necessarily untrue for differing from what one would assume.
Um... how about the fact that even if it does extend life, you're not going to perform very well on CR while you're alive?
They're just measuring how long the rats live. They don't care if they get lethargic or grouchy or forget how to integrate by parts. They don't give rats tiny little barbells to see how their strength holds up. I mean, if we're just talking physical performance, it should be pretty clear that fasting isn't good for you, or NFL champions/Olympic swimmers/etc would be doing it.
I do have a friend who sometimes eats one meal a day for weeks (he's in the military and sometimes has to) and he swears up and down it's just fine. And of course Muslims do it during Ramadan. That probably doesn't do you any damage. It's still probably not the best for mental or physical performance, though, imo.

in my personal experience it also has a lot to do with the quality of military cooking. or rather, military "cooking". usually the only meal that is in any way edible is lunch, so people cut down to only eating that.
It's more that he's in the field and has to carry all his food in a backpack for a couple weeks at a time. He says that given enough dip, he's not hungry. I know I couldn't do it. The Marines are different from you and me.

I'm in some kind of blood pact with a grim and wrathful mesopotamian god, aren't I
she had invited us for 6:00 to break the fast but we had to get there late, which was fine
we got there at 6:30 and her response was "Oh I should start cooking".
...
we ate at 8:15
so glad I didn't fast today that would have been terrible
Of course, three stars were in the sky well before that, so you could have eaten
because she is a terrible host
That is beyond rude, not having food ready at break the fast
then dessert at 10:30
I wanted to go hoome

I should have made "lab conditions" in huge red font.
