So I'm running the Rogue part of a three-man group, and I've decided to reroll. What I'm attempting to accomplish is a dual wielding kukri knife fighter who'll pop the traps and locks for the group, and provide backup damage for the dwarf and his fuck-off axe. This is what I've come up with (it doesn't take into account future drops):

Level 20 True Neutral Halfling Male
    (8 Fighter\12 Rogue)
    Hit Points: 152

It should do OK at the backup fighter, and I hope gear will ensure success for lockpicking and trap killing.

Muckbane is ok but Muckdoom is better.

Unfortunately, Muckdoom is a major pain in the butt to get, especially since most people hate running the Pit other than once for xp and favor.

Muckbane is simple to get and since oozes are easy to hit, even carry two of them (they're a ooze bane weapon that is glass, so they won't take damage from the oozes like your other weapons).

I've just been punching oozes in the face with by fist. Seems to work well enough for now.

Only level 3 (almost 4 though) but just buffing up and hitting things seems to work well for my Cleric. I have Shield of Faith, Bull's Str, and Aid up all the time and can throw in Divine Favor and summon a doggie if it's a big fight. Human Versatility for +2 attack or +2 AC gives me an edge in those really tough fights.

I would greatly consider taking Toughness a few times, maybe to replace Luck of Heroes, Great Fortitude and/or Iron Will.
Having 152 base hp's at level 20 is very, very low, and you run the risk of dying a lot. You can beef that up a little with items, but its still going to be low, especially for a melee fighter.

    Just some food for thought.

Also, why Kukri? You really wanted to Finesse a slash weapon? Consider Rapiers, the damage is better, same crit threat and you can run with Wounding/Puncturing. Vorpal is nice but W/P is more reliable, and either way you're using other effects for boss-types/death immunes.

If its an RP thing, well....ignore me I guess.

    Lastly, consider Ranger > Fighter.
Less feats over all, perhaps, but much of what you need is Free, a few nice feats as extras, more skill points, and with your high wisdom you have a few spells to look forward to, and wand usability. Also, Tempest Enhancement(s).

No, the guide posted is precisely correct. At the big T intersection, go to the left hand side and kill that brother (2nd brother on quest objectives, IIRC) and turn the valve in there. This opens a door on the other side and can trigger Muck to spawn.

To back to the T intersection. Continue straight and kill the mobs. You'll have to turn left. After the hallway turns left, you'll see two pillars and a hallway on your right--that leads to the first brother through some fire traps and if you want to finish the quest, you have to kill him as well. If you're only looking for Muck, you do not have to complete that part of the quest.

After the hallways turns left, straight ahead (i.e., if you don't go down the hallways on your right) is an open door. When you approach it, if you get an optional on your quest objectives to kill Muck, then he's spawned and is right beyond the door. Kill him and loot his chest for a chance at Muckbane. If you don't get that message, he hasn't spawned. In either case, at that point, either go back to the pillars and kill the first brother, which completes the quest (there is a rest shrine in there as well), or just recall and reform to reset the quest and go back in.

You're understating and trying to be polite. 152hp at L20 is EXTREMELY low and you will spend a lot of time dead if you're going melee just from one shot deaths from mob AOE spells/attacks. Your evasion will help, but you'll still die a lot, especially in raids. Drop the WIS and raise the CON.

I think there are a couple really solid Fighter/Rogue builds on the forums. A friend runs a dwarf one that is a very solid build and I'm sure he got it from the main DDO forums.

With a few exceptions, more HP is always better. Unless you can achieve high AC (say 60 or higher unbuffed), it just doesn't make that much difference at end game. Mid 50s will help around L14-16, but usually it's better to have more HP unless you're a specialized AC build. In most cases, building high AC takes time and effort. You'll have to grind out a lot of specialized gear.

Opinions will vary on exact HP totals to shoot for, but I think the vast majority will agree that more is always better. In most cases, melee should be over 400hp once you count everything. Pure rogues will obviously have less, but they'll want over 300hp. A very high AC character can get away with less, but in general, the higher the better. For casters, raiding guilds usually want at least 250hp once you count everything, and prefer over 300hp.

Not many people run around with purely ranged characters at end game because the DPS loss is pretty high. I don't think I've seen a mostly ranged character in the better raiding guilds. In fact, I almost never see primarily ranged based characters. The few I have do it for flavor since the DPS loss is well known.

High end content, including raids, is more about HP than AC (unless you really focus on AC). Low hp means the healers have to spam healing faster and you're in much greater risk of getting one shot. Granted, this gets easier with 32 pt builds, but my original 28 pt pure pally, that I would design differently today with more CON, is still over 400hp at L17 and that's without a Shroud crafted HP item (see list below).

Besides just base CON, here are some other sources of HP (some require grinding for crafting, something most F2P won't be ready to do for a while). Taken from a guildie post on getting more HP for squishy characters (I added info in parentheses since some F2P might not recognize the stuff listed):

"*shroud crafted item 45 (hardest to get due to time commitment getting ingredients)
*greater false life item 30 (easy to get)
*Minos helm 20 (easy to get--you can equip at L11, trade 20 tapestries found in the Orchard of the Macabre wilderness area for it--it also gives Heavy Fortification)
*con 6 item (at level 20) 60 (easy to get)
*2nd tier gianthold favor 10 (150 House A favor, gotten from Gianthold, takes a little grinding to get elite on many quests out there--but that's also good XP and pretty well designed content)

= 165 hp without toughness feat or enhancement"

    I hope that helps.

I've often considered grabbing two levels of fighter for some extra hp and two free feats. Only downside to that would be less level 9 spells and not grabbing the 10/dr at the end of the line for Favored Soul.

Is the 20hp+2 feats+heavy armor prof worth it to lose the Favored Soul Capstone? (I'm not too worried about the loss of the free command undead spell, just the DR and +2 to stats)

It seems to me that 10/ DR is far more important... if you gain 20hp by being a fighter, two hits from a mob will likely take away that 20hp you gained, but the 10/ DR is there for every hit. If I understand it right, XX/ is protection from just about everything. This seems too powerful to pass up.

In fact, as a Paladin, I would murder a baby to get 10/ DR as an enhancement. I'd probably be willing to give up heavy armor, even. 10/ DR is just incredible.

Edit: This is from someone who plays P&P a lot, but is only level 6 in DDO... I'm simply basing my comments on what Reiten said and what I know already.

Is there any reason you want to wear heavy armor? Since AC only really matters if you can get it pretty high, what type of armor that you wear isn't that important. Also, top AC armor tends to be Mithril, which makes even full plate medium armor. So I don't think it is worth it for that.

I forget, what kind of DR is it? Is it DR/-, DR/Epic or something else? DR is always nice, particularly if it is DR/-. You need Toughness anyway, so make sure to get that.

I usually prefer to stay pure unless there is something specific you want from the multiclass. Are there two feats you really want that will really help your buld? What will you lose for spells? For example, will the BAB change? Think about how you want to play the character and that should help you decide. In other words, if you're melee with casting, then fighter (or pally?) might make sense. If you're offensive casting with some melee, then staying pure probably makes sense.

    DR/Cold Iron.

Heavy armor is not a major consideration. What is important the two feats and the HP Boost.

The guy is not an offensive caster ( I put none in Willpower). I Stick to buffs and heals with my spells and roll with TWF Melee.

The two feats would give me room to grab empower healing and extend without giving up anything. TWF requires at least 4 feat slots and 6 if you grab the two defensive ones as well.

I've already done some digging on the DDO forums. The basic builds there either assume 32pt starting stats, access to +2 tomes and gear that would be considered significant to a starting character, or both. 400 HP might be the ideal in character design, but from a practical standpoint, you've got to get that gear first.

Reitan: The build I posted didn't take into account _any_ extra gear aside from some tomes once arriving in Stormreach. The character might very well end up with HP in the 300 or so by the time it gets to level 20. I don't know. Sneering at it just makes you look like an ass.

Bloodshed: I chose Kukri as a favored weapon partly because I liked the idea of a knife fighter, and partly because they're light weapons. Rapiers aren't as far as I can tell.

Rapiers are considered a 1-Handed weapon, not a Light weapon, you are correct.
I was actually thinking Oversized Two Weapon Fighting for your build.
You've chosen several feats that add to your Saving Throws, which, while that isn't a bad thing, I think you can get more bang for you buck if you work on a little extra HP and a little extra damage.

Disclaimer: The most important thing here is that you enjoy the character you're playing. I originally ran with dual daggers on my Rogue because I thought it was very "Assaassin-ish" and I was always finding amazing daggers because everyone was looking for Rapiers and Short Swords. At level cap 12 I was running around with two +4 Holy Dagger of Pure Good and tearing shit up

The only way I was able to sit down and complete NWN and NWN2 was making some very fun knife fighters. This guy is partly driven by that. I've also learned that hitting hard doesn't mean much if you can't hit to begin with, so to-hit's a priority for me.

I am thinking strongly about replacing the saves feats with Toughness (I thought there was only one, DDO changed that?). They're in spots in my build order where there wasn't a better choice from my feat list available. I just didn't like having saves so low. Watching a friend's fighter constantly disabled through fear made me think pretty hard about that.

I'm not sneering at it. I was pointing out that at end game, you'll probably find yourself very short on HP. Lots of people who have played PnP, in particular, have difficulties when building characters originally because of the differences between that and DDO. The biggest issue is too much effort at achieving mediocre AC, too much multiclassing and not enough CON. I was trying to emphasize that 8 CON is simply not enough. In fact, I think you'll find death and dying as you level will also be a problem. You'll have to be very careful about not getting agro with that few hp.

btw, for fear, get clerics to cast the buff or you can get an item (Reaver Ring? see the static loot list posted a page or two back) that makes you immune to fear. I'd recommend toughness over saves feats (exceptions would be for Insighful Reflexes for a WIZ and a few others like that that swap in your primary stat for another stat for saves).

Looking at the char creator I am better off staying pure for this build. The two combat feats don't help as well as I thought they would.

Though I might try my idea of a Favored Soul 14/Ranger 6 Arcane Archer.

Yay level 4! So far, my plan to play the equivalent of a DMM Cleric seems to be working. Especially for soloing. I have Aid, Bull's Strength, Nightshield, and Shield of Faith on at all times. All Extended to 8 minutes at a time, for about 100 sp for the whole thing. With my 300 sps total, that generally means that I can swing two full castings before being in real trouble and that is almost always enough time to get to a shrine if not clear a whole dungeon.

With all these on, my AC hits 24 and my attacks are +8/1d8+3. Probably better now because I picked up a +2 mithral shield to replace my +1.

All the new "Prestige" enhancements for Rangers and they still can't manage competative DPS using a bow? That's kind of sad. I've been itching to make a bow-heavy Ranger. Tempest Rangers are a dime a dozen, now. Where are all the Deepwood Snipers?

I'll have to play with the Planner when I get home from work, 3 boring hours to go.

What is an acceptable HP count for melee characters at 20? And what about ranged / casters?

Not many people run around with purely ranged characters at end game because the DPS loss is pretty high. I don't think I've seen a mostly ranged character in the better raiding guilds. In fact, I almost never see primarily ranged based characters. The few I have do it for flavor since the DPS loss is well known.

Are you stating opinion or fact when you refer to the ranged "DPS loss" ?

So I saw a +1 Vicious Greatsword in the Auction House for 10,000 gold. That seemed like a pretty good deal for my level 5 cleric/fighter.

Only, I was planning on wearing a set of +2 adamantine chainmail. -3 AC but 2 DR. Seemed like an okay deal.

But then I realized that DR doesn't protect from Vicious weapons. Disappointing.

Proven by lots of math, multiple times on the DDO forums, if I wasn't so lazy I would find you one and link you to it. Bow/throwing just doesn't stand up to two-weapon/two-handed fighting damage, the ranger capstone was supposed to equalize it a bit for bows and it helps balance it. The balance being that with a bow your not taking melee damage. Most ranged attackers are rangers though, you get two weapon fighting feats for free as well, don't make the mistake of only using one attack route, if you focus on ranged don't be afraid to pull out the swords, and if your a melee fighter don't be afraid to launch a few arrows.

Fact. The simple difference in the number of attacks/round makes for a big DPS loss. Ranged combat when you have Many Shot activated (especially when combined with Improved Precise Shot) is devastating, but it only lasts a short time and the cooldown timer is quite long. Other than that burst damage, ranged combat simply cannot compete with melee currently.

They've been trying to fix this for a while and things are better than they used to be (especially with the pure ranger capstone ranged speed boost), but they haven't succeeded yet. There have been a lot of posts on this on the DDO forums, check there if you don't believe me.

Don't let that stop you from making a ranged character, I made a ranged halfling thrower on ghallanda just for the fun of it and had a blast. If you plan on raiding with it in pugs be ready to be disappointed though since a good deal of the DDO pug raidleaders tend to go with the min-max or nothing route. With us you really won't have any problems though. Or at least with me.

My new Halfling "Divine Archer" is a blast to play. He is nowhere near a min/max but that's part of his charm.

We should totally try to do a bunch of G.I.M.P. characters when we can (Get Into Multiclass Project). You log into your mains then roll the dice to determine which 3 character classes your gimp is going to take, and which race. Then everytime you level you roll a 1d3 to determine which class is going to level up, the results are hilarity, there is nothing quite like a halfling barbarian/wizard/cleric GIMP.
