I was mostly joking, mustang. Don't be a whore. I actually kinda miss playing WoW for the commission base, at the moment.

Cake: Meh, DA is relatively easy to use for the massive amount of free traffic you can get if you have a decent amount of watchers. I'd say I'm mostly there for the ass patting comments.

I wouldn't say I'm "involved" with DA, but hits on new art can be a good indicator of how successful a bit of art is in the eyes of your average troglodyte.

DA is a bit of an odd beast, because while it has its extreme lows (horrible, horrible art and straight-up porn at times), it also has it's highs (astronomical juggernaut artists, useful tips and tricks on just about everything if you know where to look).

You just have to power through a lot of shit to find the diamonds.

It's actually a cracking site for good enviro paintings, mainly because the shit-sucking anime teens don't seem to be interested in producing their own half assed versions. So punching environment into search will usually yield fantastic results. This one took me under a second to find, certainly not the best artist in the world, but certainly a lot better than I am.

deviantArt is basically where I get ALL my commission work. I'm almost completely positive that's how Fantasy Flight Games found me.

You sort of settle into a comfortable little nook once you've been there for a while. You watch a couple people you like, look through their favorites and find more awesome artists and so on. Sometimes I see interesting stuff on the front page and in the DDs, but I mostly peruse the stuff that comes up on my watch list.

But yeah, there's some horrible horrible stuff on there.

I didn't know you were working right now.

Yep. Got hired almost immediately upon graduation last May and have been working since. I'm a product and packaging designer for a vertically integrated company that designs, makes, and distributes "novelty items." Any non-food item you can buy at a convenience store that isn't big name brand (bic lighters, etc) is probably made by us. We refer to our customer demographic as "Bubba" (also Bubba's wife, Bubba's kids, etc), which tells you something about the stuff we make. It is consumer driven, high turnover, kitsch, and absolutely terrible. While I am getting MAD CRAZY VALUABLE experience, and it's really cool to see the stuff I design turn into physical things, it's all made in China, and all ends up in a landfill as soon as it breaks or becomes boring, both of which I imagine happen pretty fast.

So it's very unfulfilling, and the corporate policies are pretty effing terrible. I had to work for a year with no vacation before even getting access to any of my earned days, after which I got 5. Woo-fucking-hoo. We only get 2 paid sick days per year and 0 personal days. We can take more sick days if we need them (whether it's for surgery or if you get sick again or whatever) but even though they're unpaid, we have to bring them a fucking doctor's note or they take it out of our vacation. I found that out the hard way last week.

Why the hell should I have to go PAY someone to tell me I'm sick so I can take an UNPAID day off? It's like elementary school again, only for grown-ups. Needless to say I came in the rest of the week sick. Fuckers.

Also the owner is a douche of a salesman that has no concept of the work that goes into art and the crap we make for him, subsequently demanding things within an unreasonable time frame, and pays us below industry standard while bragging up and down to his vendors and customers about his in-house design team.

Now, despite all my bitching, it is NOT a bad job. I wear what I want, we all pretty much swear freely, my coworkers are fun, my immediate bosses are alright, and the work is easy. Also, I'm employed with benefits, which is definitely something. But it makes me incredibly unhappy and sucks me completely dry of creativity and desire to create I could otherwise use for way more fulfilling, awesome projects. So I'm applying to MFA programs and looking to get out as soon as possible @n@

Man that sounds pretty rough on some accounts. Gotta do something to pay the bills in the meantime, you know? That sounds similar to what my buddy Andres is going through here in Canada, and that guy is one hell of an artist.

Something else will come along the way.
