that panda is playing hard to get

all coyly looking over one shoulder

It's certainly awesome, but doesn't harper use a great deal of geometrically smooth shapes? Am I thinking of someone else? I don't know.

Are either of these vexel? Or are they straight brush tool?

the red panda has a base made of vexel
for the other two, to avoid getting the very digital looking super sharp edges, i drew them out in vexel, then command clicked on the vexel layer to get a selection of it, then brushed in the area, turned off the vexel...
so i used them but they don't really appear in the final image

I'm a big fan of Harper's work, so nice to see you take some nods from his chops.

I think losing some of the outlines which typically make up your work is actually a huge step forward as it isn't really taking anything away from the strength of the designs.

The only thing that I'd say is 'passable but perhaps not as good as it could be' are the brushstroke edges on the ghost. Looks too obviously Photoshop to me, rather than the hand-painted aesthetic you're going for.

I'd love to see you do some work with actual brush and ink, which you then scan and finish off.

But as always, great work and some of the stuff I enjoy most of these boards.

Beav's you are so awesome! I've been trying to ape your style since this thread has come about, but I lack the love and haven't held an actual pen in like, two years...

May I ask what kind of brushes you using in photoshop for those fine effects?

Also, sorry we did not get to meet up and hug at PAX!

an assignment for school is to do a portrait of a person we know
but in a "contemporary realist" style
which as far as I can tell from the internet just means realism that's not photo realism

so... yeah, here's a portrait of Ryan eating a cookie

Yeah. To be clear when I say left I mean his left.

There isn't enough surface on the cookie to suggest depth.

The value transitions on your nose.. specifically between the larger ball part and the nostril are to harsh.. Also the way you painted it its making the nostil look like its wedging into the nose a bit incorrectly..

Hopefully this tutorial cake posted a while back helps explain what im getting at

    http://www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/2009/06/draw-nose/

Also his upper lip isnt reflecting the bulge thats showing in the reference.. which might help with making it look like hes wrapping his mouth around the cookie.. but man thats really awkward staging. even in the photograph its a bit difficult to tell whats going on with his mouth.
