I'm sorry but I just don't believe that. Not even close. I'm pretty sure that these people are seeing superficial similarities and then saying "yeah, that happens all the time!"

I mean I bet that sometimes two people who work together go out on dates. Sure. And I bet that sometimes, people's relatives come in for treatment. And there are probably even cases where two people share an apartment, like at the beginning of Scrubs, because they're friends and went to med school together or something. But the kind of bullshit that goes on there? All the important men going on a camping trip together? Persistent, unwanted sexual advances on any attractive intern by a series of men who are not disgusting and creepy and threatening? No. Sorry. Not buying this. I'm pretty sure that the reason these females are saying this is because they want their lives to be more dramatic and interesting, and they see vague similarities between their jobs and the show's setting.

Ive also heard from someone who had a friend who was interning at a hospital that it was a point in her life when she was having the most sex she's ever gotten

No shit. How old are interns? That's why.

Some shows are terribly, blatantly formulaic but they're still fun. Like House or Monk.

That's fine. I watch Scrubs from time to time. It's painfully formulaic, the people who make the show know it, and they revel in it. I think the same is true of L&O. They use the formula to control moods, tension, mystery, etc. and every now and then they use it to really play the audience.

Formula is ok if you are creative. ie SNL

Formula is awful if you are not creative or you have shitty actors. ie SNL

See what I mean? I understand that heinous crimes is the premise of the show (and they stick to that very well) but that doesn't make it a good premise. It can be just as interesting as any "whodunit" without involving a guy having his dick cut off in the subway. The only thing special it has to offer is grotesque crimes, and if I wanted to see those I would have volunteered with the red cross in darfur.
Nevermind their attempts to develop the characterization of the regular cast, discuss professional and legal ethics, constitutionality, and the direction of legislation in the context of moral depravity.

It's certainly not a deep examination in those regards, but the show is about entertainment, and those elements are there to engage one's interest.

    Its not all like that.

SVU is special victims. They deal with Children, the Elderly, and Sexually based crimes.

There are plenty of episodes about whacking off some old woman for her will and whatnot, without finding out she was somehow pregnant at the age of 76.

And yeah, being that it's the Special Victims Unit the people involved tend to be either sexually abused, children, or special cases. Hence Special Victims.

The fact that they warn you at the beginning doesn't make it any less morbid or exploitative.

Not that I'm saying it is.

I think it's called "whacking" or perhaps "offing" (maybe that's a bit more UK), but either way, I don't think you can whack off old ladies. I think someone needs a penis for that to work.

My co-host's wife once slipped up her words and told me to go beat off some guys (downstairs neighbors) that were being loud jerks. It took her a few moments to realize what she had said.

    She'll never live it down.

oh wait how old are the interns on the show. oh yeah. I mean there are people who exist who do have more than enough drama in their lives, and I think it's a little presumptuous to just flatly go "no that doesn't happen." then again, that dips into the question of art imitating life or vice versa, where we could just chase our tails all day trying to figure out which came first, the factual or the representation of the factual.

in summation, just because you don't witness daily drama, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
