Some people were complaining about the FFXI interface, so I will break it down here to make it easy to understand. First, we have the right half of the keyboard. I have marked it up in MSpaint for reference:
First, don't use the mouse at all. Ever.
You press the red button (pinky or ring finger) for your menu. Navigation inside the menus is done with the arrow keys (thumb) and the enter key (pinky)
The 8 key is for moving forward. You would use this key with your middle finger. Turning left and right is done with the 4 and six keys, using your index and ring fingers. I marked the seven key for autorun, and the / key for switching between running and walking.
Next we have the left side of the keyboard:
Targeting is done with the Tab and Escape key, marked in Black. You can make a macro to target specific things more quickly, I use one myself.
Speaking of Macros, you hold down the CTRL or the ALT key, and hit 1 through 0. You have 10 banks of keys in game, 20 keys per bank. Changing banks of hot keys is down by holding down the CTRL or ALT key and hitting the up or down arrows.
Really, that is all there is to it, unless you want to use a controller. I don't use one myself, but I hear it makes it a whole new game.
tl;dr: Move with the right hand, actions with the left hand. MENUs with the right hand.

I always use(d) a controller and the keyboard for macros. I know you can use the controller to trigger a macro but since my hands were always close to the keyboard anyway for typing it just worked well to quickly pop whatever command for said macro on the keyboard. It's probably completely psychological, but playing with a controller made it feel more "active" or something, since my brain usually associates faster gameplay games with consoles and more strategic slower games with the PC. I know that everyone isn't like that though.
Hell, when I played WHM or BLM in a party, you can do everything you need to virtually by only using macros. One handed MMO's ftw!
The other hand was used for uh....drinking. Yeah. Nothing to do with mithras...just drinking Surge (now Vault).

I know, I switch between this and WoW from time to time. This would be the third time I would be coming back to XI and though I'm fighting it this seems like a good time.
Did my first Kirin fight ever (I've gotten to 75 twice before on my old character, but didn't do any sky activites, really). It was fun. I wish they could all be melee-burn fights though, because 3:40 for Kirin is a lot more fun than 30:40.

Latest update added these buggers to battle RMT fishbots in Valkurm, Qufim, Buburimu, Batallia, etc... God I love that name. SE really knew what it was battling in the creation of this mob.
Does anyone have a friend pass? My good buddy Sean wants to try the game, but I accidently threw out the flier for a friend trial. If anyone has an extra, I'd appreciate it if you could PM the codes.
When there are trials, they're very exclusive, and not like something as common as most MMO's. I hear some of the 2007 Collections have buddy passes in them, and occasionally in the past different promotions with like Alienware or whatever would offer a month, but besides that there isn't anything.
And someone told me there were no trials for this...
KingsHand is right. The only place I am aware of to get a free month trial pass is from the DVD sets. They allow you to give one person a one-month free trial.
re: the promotions, I believe that's the Welcome Back to Vana'Diel thing they have done a couple of times in the summer. They offer people who have long since cancelled their accounts a free month to come back and give it another shot.
On a related topic, if you have someone who just wants to see how the game will look/perform on their system, tell them to hit the POL site and download the benchmarking program.
