    Purgatory is purgatory. A place where Christians have a second chance to be purified and ascend into heaven.

    Hence why the second book of The Divine Comedy is Purgatorio.

    Christian dogma holds that all people are born spiritually dead. So, you're dammed from conception. You don't have to do anything to earn that, it's inherent in human nature. That's why Catholics baptize so soon, it's like spiritual insurance in case the baby dies before it can really undergo salvation.

    Protestants don't really have a firm belief on the matter, some sects say they aren't saved, some people say that they are.
