For the uninitiated, here's his Wikipedia entry:

Daredevil (Matthew Murdock) is a fictional character, a superhero in the Marvel Comics Universe. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett[1] in Daredevil vol. 1, #1 (April 1964), he is notable as being among the few superheroes with a disability. Blinded during his youth, his other four senses developed to compensate, and he obtained a sonar-like ability to perceive objects.

Over the years Daredevil has been the guardian of Hell's Kitchen in 616's New York. Starting serious shit there means you're going to be getting a visit from this fine fellow. He is unique in that his strengths are attributed to his handicap of being blind, and seldom has there been characters used in this fashion that aren't some sort of parody.

So...I suppose the first question I pose to you all would be: Brubaker's run. Is it overrated?

Brubaker's first arc was masterful. His second arc was less good.

Besides Bullseye, does Daredevil have any sort of Rogue's Gallery of his own? I know he's, sort of, Kingpin's arch nemesis, but has DD gone up against any costumed villains that are basically his bad guys?

Nitro seems to be somebody he's ran into on multiple occasions. DD himself had mentioned he has a really shitty set of "villains". His bread and butter is beating the shit out of mafia types/various gangsters.

Brubaker's work was good, but Bendis and Maleev are the reason I fell in love with the book.

So yeah, to me Brubaker's run seems a bit overrated if only because a lot of people are calling it better than Bendis/Maleev's.

Edit: DD has also had a few confrontations with Hammerhead

I don't think they ever collected those, and for good reason. That was the longest, most boring trial ever.

Is Marvel's Hell's Kitchen anything like the real Hell's Kitchen anymore, or have they kept it the same as it was in the 60's so they can justify the continued presence of a superhero dedicated to the area?

I mean, the Daily Show is filmed there now.

    well, yes and no.
when Matt became kingpin, he turned Hell's Kitchen into like one of the safest and nicest places of NYC. I'm not sure what condition it is in now that he is no longer kingpin.

Marvel's Hell Kitchen is similar to the relatively normal modern one, as explained by Punisher in his old Marvel Knights series by Garth Ennis.

If I remember correctly Reed made the chainmail mesh for Daredevil's costume and I can only imagine he had him also modify his baton so the cable attaches and detaches as quickly as it does. Don't think the baton was ever really explained how a blind guy put something like that together

He fights the Hand more than anyone else on earth.

Seriously, thats why when the New Avengers had to deal with the Hand, Cap went to Matt first.

Why does he have to do something different? Bendis' run was superb, I've got no problem with Brubaker continuing to tell stories in the same vein, since he's just as good at it as BMB was.

The difference being there was a sense of imminent danger. Matt was in a terrible position that culminated in him going batshit on Bullseye. Now, while his shit isn't perfect, Murdock's life is for the most part back to normal. Since the name of the arc seems to hint at something coming to him I can't help but feel we're going to regress instead of progress. Brubaker should know this theme is becoming a little played out right now to anybody following Marvel, let alone DD.

the scene from the king of hell's kitchen arc where
matt in plainclothes takes on a hundred guys jacked up on mgh and fucking kicks their collective ass, specifically the page where the fight starts and before, urich had been talking about how when someone really wants to kill you they just show up and murder you and then just this big one page splash where matt's leaping like ten feet over their heads with his cane up just fucking all-out attacking, and urich goes 'at least, in theory'
, that scene is my favorite superhero moment of all time.

    Mine was when during Hardcore
Matt has fucking had it with Bullseye and does what isn't really out of character for somebody with that sort of stress level....he takes a rock and carves out the outline of Bullseye's tattoo. It is at that moment that Bullseye is both surprised and scared shitless. This is what happens when you fuck with a hero one too many times.
