In all seriousness how many iconic characters have rocked the fedora? Dick Tracy, Indiana Jones, The Shadow to name just a few. Hell, as much as I hate to admit it, Michael Jackson actually looked pretty cool with the ferdora in his video.
See, these are all make believe characters. Yes, I'm including MJ in that.
99.5% of people in real life wearing Fedoras look awful.
Hats look almost universally awful. Baseball caps are generally ok if you're in a casual setting, toques are good in winter (I put beanies in with toques since I own one :P)
Trus on

Hey, you guys answer my questions...
H/A Thread (no, it's not about boners, drugs, animals, or relationships)
i know right? comes in to my classy hat thread spamming his silly help me make a blog thread, then posts some bizarre whale/bathroom hybrid attacking some poor girl like it makes up for such a crass indiscretion.
Good thing about halloween is you get to wear hats you wouldn't normally.
So, where can I buy a fedora?
Are you going to wear it with 3 layered polos with all the collars popped?
I thought about doing it, but if anyone didn't get that I was supposed to be an asshole wearing it, I might just cry.

I wore caps for a long time, and still do when the weather requires it, but I finally sprung on a quality fedora and it's probably the best purchase, clotheswise, I've done. Also the most money I've spent on a single thing, clotheswise.
I think if you want to wear a hat, wear it like you want it. I've never heard anyone assume that I'm wearing it ironically, but I have been stopped in the street several times by people asking me where I got it.
So yeah, I wuv my hat and bemoan the lack of hat-wearing in todays society.

I had a fedora it got ruined sadly. I wore it as part of my suit, and man I looked swanky. I also have my baseball caps mostly Cardinals. I also have one of those hats that are worn by like paper boys. It looks decent. I have a high hair line now so I don't mind hiding it with a hat.
the paperboy hats are definitely awesome, but have a strong working class association. As such, I think if you were to wear one to the office you would risk marginalizing your image.
Or looking too irish.
Are you talking about flatcaps?
ah. apparently I am.
these:
I guess a paper boy cap is different? Is that also called a newsie cap?
I used to wear one of those when I was 18 to 20.
I had a Kangol Coral Newsboy, just like the red on in the picture except the lip on mine was also red.
Of course... in classic B-Boy style, I wore mine backwards so you could see the white Kangol Kangaroo.
I've seen three people in person in my whole life who wore a hat appropriately. There are few situations in day to day life for the average person where hats have a functional purpose and are well placed with the outfit.
JFK had a good idea. Forget hats. When people realized that was fine the world became a better place.

nowadays, the only time you see a fedora or Bowler on a suited male, he's a pimp.
Hell, it isn't just fedora or bowlers or formal hats. Flat caps and gatsby hats are still worn poorly.
Baseball caps seem to be exempt for some reason partly because it actually goes with any t-shirt/jeans. It is unfortunate it is associated with hiding a receding hairline.

Interesting. I didn't think JFK started it, I thought he was just a highly visible example of the trend. But live and learn!

This is what I wear when I don't give a damn about fixing my hair before heading out and grabbing some breakfast after a killer night.

wait. what does this have to do with hats!?!
wait a second. i forgot about cowboy hats.
don't people wear these pretty much everywhere southern all the time?
ronny says: nothing shows you mean business like southern style headwear. what a majestic president.
thats just, like, your opinion, man. If you're gonna criticize, at least throw up a fancy hat for everyone's admiration.
I never finish anyth
I just have a huge head.
it's a hat. nearly as impressive as this delectable treat:
the right hat could hide this deformity for you!
A man walks down the street in that hat, the rest of the quote.
It's from Royal Ascot. There is always competition for the prize of "Most outlandish hat".

EDIT: I feel I should point out that there is not a literal prize, it's just a tradition.
That woman was the target of some very flamboyant ninjas.

japan! you wasted so much pure hat thread gold in one sweeping post!
I am both shocked and dismayed at your lack of discretion!

If you have to hold your hat up, it fails.

that was a response to the discussion about the abe lincoln pciture above. it was one of those things where i forgot to refresh before i quickreplied.

(I think that you really, really need the right outfit to wear a hat other than a baseball cap. Even then, you run the risk of looking ridiculous.)
