Our BYOC manager has advised me that LPNW will be running the tournament. I'm sure we'll see something from them soon.

The rules for 3/4 PC tournaments are posted on the Events page.

    http://www.penny-arcade.com/pax/events.php

The rules for the BF2 tournament (it's listed as DC on the Events page in the rules area) are:

    One map per match

    8 player teams
    One Round per match
    20 minute time limit
    Spawn time of 15s

The maps that will be used are:

    Dalian Plant
    Daqing Oilfields
    Dragon Valley
    FuShe Pass
    Gulf of Oman
    Kubra Dam
    Mashtuur City

Further details will need to be posted by Fall aka Fallout from LPNW, who's running this tournament.

If its one round per match, wouldnt it be better to have teams switch sides and play again, therefore curing any map balance issues (most maps have at least some bias)

    Ideally, yes.

Unfortunately we don't have an unlimited amount of time to run this in. It may be we do that for the finals, it may be the rules are changed when we get an idea of how many participants there are, and it may be we use an idea offered by Decim8 from www.lanpartynw.com where one side chooses the map, then the other team chooses the side.

And, of course, we're trying to make sure only the most equal maps are used in the tournament.

    Additional comments are welcome.

The Battlefield 2 tournament is planned differently than the other PC tournaments. The team sizes are substantially larger (8 versus the normal 5 for team games) and the provided systems aren't all able to play the game due to some hardware issues. This means that depending on who wants to play (BYOC gamers or non BYOC gamers) the tournament could be quick (equally split between them) or extremely slow (few BYOC participants).

If we're able to get a reasonable split between the two expect the rules to reflect standard CAL rules (although, 15 minute rounds instead of 30), but if we don't get a reasonable split (last PAX tourneys involved 90% non-BYOC gamers) then a one map setup like that posted by Dave is what will be used. In order to try to keep things fair a coin-flip will determine who picks a map, then the other team picks the side.

Regardless of turnout we'll keep the finals best 2/3.

Any chance we can get a rundown of the BYOC rules / security information?

I don't want to have to take down my PC every time I go to the washroom. :(

    Oh, I suppose.

People with BYOC badges are the only ones that can bring equipment in or out of the BYOC room. Exits will be guarded by Enforcers trained by only the best ninja-monkeys. They can kill you with a flap of the eyelid.

Guests are allowed entrance, but they will have to have a BYOC escort and check any bags with security.

Anytime a BYOC person brings equipment in or out, they'll have to be checked in by more ninja-monkey trained assassins of death. Everything people bring in will be tracked and stored with your badge number, so when they leave we can check and make sure they're leaving with the same stuff they brought in.

We're taking security very seriously. PAX has a lot to offer, and it's our goal to make everyone feel secure in checking it all out.

Now, if I were reading all of this instead of writing it, my concern would be long lines forming. Security is great, but it usually comes at the expense of speed, right? The system we're using to check people in was custom built from the ground up specifically for this application. It's fast. Really fast. We'll also have at least two systems running during peak checkin times just to make absolutely sure there's absolutely no lines forming. And if somehow lines do start forming, we'll just open up another checkpoint.

    Any questions?

A fan? A fan of stickers? No, I hate stickers on my stuff because LANs always use the cheapest stickers possible which rip, and the adhesive never comes off etc etc.

Well im the leader of the ninja money men :P

Im going to have 4 computers set up for checkin of equipment. Should go fast.

Also another thing dave didnt mention. There will be no bags allowed in the PC Freeplay room, and non byoc people wont be able to bring any bags into the byoc room either. Ill have my security hold peoples bags for them at the door.

    I have a few(more) questions regarding the BF2 tourney.

    1. Is it going to be all byoc or just partially? I talked to to tycho and he is telling me that there was a bunch of copies of bf2 for the in-house machines. This is important because not all my team has spots in the BYOC room.

    2. Regarding the map list- No Karkand? and are the game going to be run on the 16 player versions?

    3. Is there any way to put our names down on a tentative list for sign up? I thought you guys might want an idea of how many teams to expect -OR- Is there a limit to the number of teams you can have? If so when is the earliest we can sign up?

    Thanks!

    4. Will we be able to log in to our accounts (internet access) to get our unlocked weapons? -OR- will the local server have all weapons unlocked?

This is important so we can practice with the correct weapons

uc4life, it is partially BYOC, but only some of the in-house machines have BF2 on them as not all of them are fast enough to run it.

I hopefully will be allowed into the BF2 tournament, although I have no team. I fly the helicopters pretty well, haven't even tried a joystick yet.

Correct. However pack mules are strictly prohibited.

It'll be both, but space is limited.

Look for a response from Fallout on that, I don't play much BF2 so I couldn't pick that map out of a lineup. ;)

For people who are not bringing in their computer, signups probably won't be open until around 7:00pm. If your team does not have a full 8 people in their roster, I would strongly suggest your team leader being there around 6:00ish to vulture other people and complete your team. Only full teams will be allowed to sign up.

As far as a limit to the number of teams, Fallout will have to respond to that.

All that said, as soon as you get to PAX I would suggest checking out the Tournament Area to brief yourself on any changes and also familiarize yourself with where it's at. This is where tournament admins will be when they're on duty (ie, from a couple hours before the tournament, until the end). We'll also have tournament information posted and available as fliers.

We'll also designate an area for people who are looking for a team to graciously take them in. It would not be a bad idea to bring a sign saying something like, "Have index finger, will frag" to quickly identify yourself to anyone looking for an additional member. I'm only partly joking.

For people who are bringing in their computers, signups will be open at 2:00pm on Friday...aka, the exact moment the doors open for pre-registrants.

As a side note, choose your team captains carefully. 90% of the time, that's going to be the only people we want to talk to you. Nothing personal, Group Member #4, but you could die in a fire and we would sleep well that night. It's your team captain we care about, and he needs to be reporting wins/losses and nearby between matches. It's his job to take that information and deliver to you, worthless peon.

We manage the tournament, we don't manage your team.
    UC4Life wrote:

Pending disagreement from Fallout, who's God as far as this tournament goes, I'm pretty sure it will be the basic weapons only to make sure everyone is fighting on level grounds.
    GeeCee wrote:

Actually, this no longer looks to be the case, although things change far too rapidly to make any predictions. Suffice to say both Robert and Mike are using all of their magical abilities to make as many computers as humanly (or inhumanly) possible. You wouldn't believe the number of mana potions they've downed. And I might be talking about Bawls. Because both are generally blue, and I'm pretty sure they do the same thing.
    Alystair wrote:

I know you're winking, and probably jestering, but just to be clear, people who are bringing their own computers must have their own network cable (the longer the better), their own power strip (the more fire-resistant the better), and their own network card (yes, I've seen people come to a lan party without a network card, no, I don't understand it either).

If you've asked a question I have not responded to (excepting things I've pawned off on Fall), remind me. Everything I've posted here is subject to change...as I've said, I strongly suggest checking out the Tournament area as soon as you get to PAX.

The one question I have left is about the maps. What maps will be used and what versions?

They will be 16 player versions. Fallout should be stopping in sometime soon to specify what maps will be used for what rounds in the tournament.

Expect to play every single map on that list with the 16 player version. Map selection per round won't be announced until the event begins, nor will it for any of the other tournaments. Be ready to fight on all of them and you won't have a problem.

There won't be anything involving unlockable weapons. This is an FPS, not World of Warcraft. In a tournament no one will be given an advantage because they've unlocked some console-style game features. Unlockable weapons being disabled isn't a personal preference of mine, but a standard part of the CAL rules which we're using a modified version of suited for LAN play.

As for BYOC/non-BYOC play, tournaments will be played on both sets of systems. If you have a BYOC system you will be expected to play on your system. If you don't, you will be provided a BYOC system for your match. As I said in an earlier post, the Battlefield 2 tournament structure might be modified slightly based on the ratio of BYOC to non-BYOC gamers due to the number of systems that will be available for use that are able to play Battlefield 2.

Just to be sure-- "that" list being the seven maps that were mentioned early on in the thread?

    Dalian Plant
    Daqing Oilfields
    Dragon Valley
    FuShe Pass
    Gulf of Oman
    Kubra Dam
    Mashtuur City

I'm kind of scratching my head wondering if this will be a bigger tournament than last years DC 5v5 due to the full 8 man teams. I hope this year is bigger. Last year was, shall we say, quick? ;)

There's only one map list that has been referred to for the BF2 tournament, and it's also up on the PAX website with the other tourney rules.

There's no guarantees as to how many people show up to play. Battlefield is a very popular pub game but gets very little serious play in tournaments. Considering this and the overwhelming number of casual gamers that will be at the event (most of which will be there for console games and shiny objects) I wouldn't expect a large turnout for the tournament. I'm hoping for getting 8 teams of 8, but that's a pretty generous estimate.

PAX is a consumer event, not an industry event like E3, or a competitive event like CPL. It has bits of both E3 and CPL, but the main focus of the event is on things that'd interest the average consumer-gamer.
