brave new world was an interesting idea but a pretty shitty book, but there's an iron maiden album named after it so it gets a pass
Pretty much. Except it wasn't a shitty book
And it was a good book meant to illustrate what a shitty idea that future was, not a good book meant to illustrate how great of an idea it was
yes that is why I said 'interesting' not 'good' and almost everyone who has read the book will realise that, but thanks for spelling it out those of us would never understand.
Daylight Savings Time happening tonight is such a bitch. I have my church job at piss in the morning, and it would just be horrible if I missed it. Horrible.
Handed out over 300 candy bars this year. Set up the firepit and a couple chairs in the driveway so kids wouldn't have to fight my dog to get a Butterfinger. People were happy with all the fire I had going on

How many people think 1984 is socialist utopia with a happy ending.
I refuse to believe that people think this
on the other hand, Orwell was close to being a trotskyist and most of what he wrote that could be seen as a critique of socialism in general is meant to be an attack on stalinism.

He pretty much was a Trotskyist, and when you apply the book to Soviet history, Goldstein most definately becomes Trotsky and big Brother Stalin. However, the book never praises communism. The most you can say (and, in some contexts it is very important to say) that it only condemns totalitarian socialism. There is, however, no praise of socialist government to be found in 1984. Some might see it in Goldstein's Book, but that'd be rather difficult to defend without being deceptive.
Yeah, it's pretty similar to animal farm if you just look at that aspect of it really, except animal farm is all "hey this went well at first but then lol whoops as bad as having the tsar again"
he's a Democratic Socialist, Democratic Socialists are not necessarily Trots aaaaaaaaaa
Orwell refused to label himself precisely. He identified as an anarchist early in life, fell out by his mid or late twenties, and began to associate with various socialist groups. He joined the Independent Socialist Party, more because it was a socialist party than because it was the perfect socialist party. What little is known about his political views ally well enough with Trotsky's through most of his life, and he is known to have praised Trotsky both directly and through his fiction.
He was about as Trotskyist as and Englishman can get.

I kind of need to read the rest of his books first, probably. I have a set of 6 of them somewhere but I've only read animal farm, 1984, and about half of burmese days because holy shit that is a dry read
also heh this is kinda interesting, especially looking at the lists of notable _____s, one seems a bit more... german than the other.

Nah, it's more about his life than his work. Burmese Days comes in a bit, but only inasmuch as he wrote it. It parallels Animal Farm a bit and mentions 1984.
How many people think 1984 is socialist utopia with a happy ending.
what
I am glad you have never met these people. You probably would have killed them and you would be in prison.
Most of them are just painfully stupid. "It's happy because Winston is happy!" sort of thinking.
Some are related to Run^3 and think that the Ministry of Love is a great idea.
What
seriously
I mean
what
how do people think that
are they retarded
I mean I'll admit that I tend to miss a lot of subtext in books
but that was pretty damn obvious
Well you have two options for a conclusion
a) People are nothing more than the chemical compositions of their brains ( Sadface )
b) People are more than the chemical compositions of their brains ( yay )
okay maybe it isn't happy FOR HIM
but still, I can see how you might perceive that as a happy ending

You need to read Finding George Orwell in Burma.
