NT and ME perhaps, but how do 1 and 2 not fit into the sequence? Yeah, most people had 3 as their first Windows installation, but I remember using 2.1 back in the day.

Because it's based on NT 4.0.
    XP was 5
    Vista was 6
    Windows 7

Of course it's actually version 6.1 but supposedly that's because they didn't want to break a lot of software that checks version. Or something... what??

The price is probably the only one. If you have Vista SP2, you really don't need to spend one dime on 7, as the improvements are minor.

But yeah, by all means, Windows 7 is the best so far, as it's the most up-to-date copy of Vista.

so you're just saying it should be called windows vista ocelot jaguar panther

2000 was NT 5.0. Again.. it's based off NT now, all the MS-DOS based versions of Windows are irrelevant (Windows 3.1, 95, 98, etc)

    NT 3.1, 3.5, and 3.51
    NT 4.0
    "Windows 2000" is NT 5.0
    XP is 5.1
    Vista is 6.0
Windows 7 is... uh.. 6.1.. duh it's so simple you see...

Millennium edition doesn't specify which millennium, and having personally used it after my previous computer experience being windows 3.1 I can say it belongs in the 1000s, not the 2000s.

I know that apple really isn't responsible for this, but the muddying of the term 'Tablet' to refer to mobile internet devices and PMPs, as opposed to pen-based computing devices kinda annoys me.

I built a new rig in December of 2007 and put Vista Home Premium on it. The only problems I've ran into are running really old programs (a few older games) but everything else has worked like a charm.

The only crashes I've had were releated to having some buggy software running, and in the past two years I have yet to have the system lock up on me.

I'm saying it should be called Vista. Because that's what it is.

XP went from versions NT5.1 to 5.2 and it was still called XP through its service packs and switch from x86 to x64 through its 5.5 year cycle.

Vista was version 6.0 but now suddenly two years after its release the upgrade to 6.1 is sold as an entirely new OS.

That was my point. You guys are saying you never got Vista. But you just did, when you got Windows 7.
I read that they kept the version number at 6.x to not fuck over programs that check for some sort of "major windows version" variable, and then refuse to work when it's not the one they expected.

Seriously don't know, I ran vista on a t5550 with 2GB ram, and it was okay. Windows 7 feels so much faster, the UI has so many nice features to it.. I didn't even hate vista, but 7 is so much better.
I don't have an old machine, but people say that it runs as fast as xp on their old machines, so that#s positive?

Windows PCs so rarely lock up anymore. I don't know why it's still a stereotype for the operating system. They're much more likely to blue screen or have some other error if there is a problem than just lock up. Although I have been hearing about locking up issues for 7, but we're still going to see some bugs with something so new.

Apple makes some nice, if overpriced, products but no, nobody takes their advertising seriously any more.

It's like Steve Jobs stuck in the 80s where PCs are green-screen terminals running Word Perfect and Lotus 1-2-3 and Macs have *gasp* color screens and a mouse and Mac Paint! Hi, hello Steve it's the 2000s now, almost 2010s actually maybe you haven't looked at one lately but nowdays PCs have full color screens, and stereo sound and can run Photoshop and After Effects and well, basically everything a Mac can do and about 9999x more.

    hahah what
In only eight hours, pre-orders of Windows 7 at Amazon.co.uk surpassed the demand Windows Vista had in its first 17 weeks.[65] It became the highest-grossing pre-order in Amazon's history, surpassing sales of the previous record holder, the seventh Harry Potter book.[66]
