Someone else can make the "remake old art" challenge, because most of my old artwork is several hundred kilometers away in a box.

I WILL BE THIS SOMEONE, because I love revisiting old artwork and it's my challenge so I get to do what I want :3

The aim of this challenge is to choose an old piece of art you've done and reconstruct it using your current (presumably improved) level of skill. While certain stylistic and creative liberties can be taken, this challenge should not be used to completely redesign the piece--the new art should be recognizable as the original subject matter. I'd say the minimum age for the art ought to be no younger than one year old, and probably shouldn't be any more than 10 years old. We don't need anyone redrawing stick figures or things they drew in elementary school, nor do we need a new piece that looks almost exactly like the old piece because the old piece was done a few months ago. Pick a piece you put some serious effort into at the time, so we can really see how far you've come! Please post the original drawing with the re-draw for comparison.

Edit:

You must create new artwork for this challenge in order for it to qualify! That's the whole point of these challenges! If you've already done something like this before, awesome! But you can't use it for this, so draw something else you lazy bum!

Will the winner be judged on improvement, or just general badassery of the new pic?

I think both ought to be considered.
For clarity.

Here's a really rough example of one I did four years ago (I can't friggen believe it's been that long, holy crap):

Original (1999 - 8th grade)

Re-draw (2005 - college sophomore)

~ BI-WEEKLY (aka, bi-monthly) CHALLENGE THREAD ~

For those of you who frequent the conceptart.org forums this should be pretty familiar; tens of artistic combatants thrown together in to an artistic arena, each struggling for the honor of being dubbed a master of the visual arts. Those of you who succeed will be bathed in glory and the blood of their competitors, those of you who fail will be exiled to a life of shame and isolation.

The aim of this thread is to try and spice things up a bit here in the ol' Artist's Corner. This thread is for entries in to the challenge or the discussion thereof. If you'd like to suggest a topic for the weekly challenge, go right ahead, but understand that the last winner of the challenge has total control over the task (unless they have won more than two challenges in a row, see rules).

The rules are simple;

RULES:

* One entry per person, per challenge.
* A contestant cannot win more than two challenges in a row.
* Winner gets the privilege of choosing the next challenge.
* At the end of a challenge, the thread is locked and a new one is begun.
* Stick to the challenge topic; no going off on a tangent.
* All formats welcome, whether they be traditional or digital; 2D or 3D; still or animated.

If you're looking for inspiration, check out the aforementioned conceptart.org forums (specifically the creature/environment/character of the week sections).

CHALLENGE 1: Hidden World

The actual dates I saved that stuff is late 2003/early 2004. The dates in the webspace are when I uploaded it.

    But still, yeah.

Ah. Still, I distinctly remember a HUGE jump in ability within a very short period of time :B And that much improvement in 5-6 years is still impressive.

Those were all uploaded from the same day, so they are probably substantially older than 3 years.

[edit] I think the winner is 'HAMMER MAN' from 2005. It's one of the first things I ever posted on these boards. I thought it was pretttty daang good at the time...

    hammer_man2K5.png

And here is a sort of similar thing I did a month or so ago (the original is from 2006).

haha im going to do the first scrap posted in my deviantart

    october 14th 2003

you know, the scariest thing about looking at my art from back then is that ... i have not improved. i went though a HUGE learning spike from 2001 - 2004 and then it just ... levelled out.

i did find a drawing i did of ikage back in 2004 though XD

oh, question -- if you drew someone with mouse ears back then, can you choose to not include them this time around >_> ... i guess it wouldnt be the same picture. haha.

beav: THAT'S NOT THE POINT OF THE CHALLENGE

mully: As long as it's still recognizable, I think that's ok. It'd be good if you could work them in somehow, but if it's hurting your drawing then by all means exclude them.
