The GOP: From "Joe Cao is the future!" to "BURN THE SOCIALIST HEATHEN!!1!"

edited November 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
In the GOP's ongoing effort to be, on average, three millimeters to the left of Attila the Hun, Anh "Joseph" Cao (R-LA, occupying William "Dollar Bill" Jefferson's old seat after beating him by three points in a D+28 district) has a primary opponent for next year, because he voted for the health care reform bill that was put before the House on Sunday night. This, despite the fact that Cao even voted against the stimulus (ostensibly because it didn't give his district enough money, actually because Boehner wouldn't let him), and voted for the Stupak Amendment. He's the only Republican who could possibly be elected from that district next year, on the power of incumbency, and even with that he'll almost certainly lose, and they want him out. The Republican Party: Conservatism Uber Alles!

I know I heard last night that someone had already vowed to primary him, but at this point, he won't have the support of the Club for Growth.

Bonus Poe's Law Moment: Last night I posted two fictitious quotes from Fox about this: "Joe Cao just voted for socialism!" and "This will definitely hurt his reelection prospects, yes." Three people asked me who had said that and when it would be up for viewing.

Michelle Malkin kicks off what is sure to be a floodgate of Cao criticism
    Plus it's just comedy gold
The final 220-215 roll call vote on passage of the House Dems’ government health care takeover bill is here.
And here is the 240-194 roll call vote on the Stupak amendment to extend the ban on federal abortion subsidies to Obamacare/Pelosicare.
Thanks to Doug Powers for filling in while I spoke at the Foundation for Life event in Sugar Land, Texas tonight. What an incredible juxtaposition it was — meeting and talking with the true agents of Hope and Change, the true guardians of innocent life, and the true advocates for women and children outside the Beltway as the Democrat majority inside the Beltway rammed the massive, job-killing, high-taxing, bureaucracy-multiplying, generational debt-piling health care monstrosity down America’s throat.
One Republican voted for Pelosicare: GOP Rep. Anh (Joseph) Cao of Louisiana.
Yes, he’s the one who took over corruptocrat Democrat William Jefferson’s seat. I had reservations about him on election night because of his soft-on-immigration views. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt. If he could stand strong on limited government and fiscal conservatism, it would be worth it.
Well, since he was elected, Cao has backed the S-CHIP expansion, the $108 billion IMF bailout, and the omni-waste spending bill. And he voted to rebuke GOP Rep. Joe Wilson for calling out President Obama on his health care lies.
That is a steep price to pay for Rep. William Jefferson’s removal.
    Can’t the GOP do better?
For what it is worth, here is the cheap price the Democrats paid for Cao’s vote:
Louisiana Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao on Sunday morning released a statement after he voted as the only Republican in favor of the Democratic health care reform bill.
The health care reform bill, dubbed the “Affordable Health Care for America Act” (H.R. 3962), passed the U.S. House of Representatives in a 220 – 215 vote.
“Tonight, I voted to keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortion and to deliver access to affordable health care to the people of Louisiana,” Cao said in a statement released by his office. “I read the versions of the House [health reform] bill. I listened to the countless stories of Orleans and Jefferson Parish citizens whose health care costs are exploding – if they are able to obtain health care at all. Louisianans needs real options for primary care, for mental health care, and for expanded health care for seniors and children.”
Cao wrote he obtained commitment from President Obama that he would work together to address the health care issues of Louisiana, including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals. “I call on all my constituents to support me as I work with him on these issues.”
He obtained a “commitment from President Obama.”
You know what that’s worth: Nothing.

    Shine on you crazy diamond

    Not so "lol"
A conservative author whose book was touted just last month by four Republican members of Congress is explicitly calling for a "backlash" against American Muslims in the wake of the Fort Hood shootings.

Dave Gaubatz, author of Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that's Conspiring to Islamize America, made the comment in a semi-coherent interview with the group Family Security Matters.

In assigning collective blame for the Fort Hood killings, Gaubatz said:
Politicians, Muslims, and law enforcement are concerned about a 'backlash' against Muslims. Now is the time for a professional and legal backlash against the Muslim community and their leaders. Muslims know what materials are being taught in their mosques and they know many of the materials instruct young Muslims to kill innocent people who do not adhere to Sharia law. If Muslims do not want a backlash, then I would recommend a "house cleaning." Stack every Saudi, al Qaeda, Pakistani, Taliban, Hamas, and Muslim Brotherhood piece of material from their mosque and have a bonfire. Tell the American, Jewish, and Muslim community this hatred will no longer be allowed in their mosques.

All of this might be dismissed as the ranting of a fringe lunatic, but for the fact that Gaubatz's work has been circulated and endorsed by prominent Republican officials.

Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) wrote the foreword to Muslim Mafia, which came out last month. And she is the leader of a group of four House Republicans -- including Myrick, John Shadegg (AZ), Paul Broun (GA), and Trent Franks (AZ) -- pursuing the book's claims of Muslim intern "spying" on Capitol Hill.

Just last week the Denver Post published an op-ed by former congressman Tom Tancredo outlining the supposed revelations in Gaubatz's book.

Gaubatz's comments aren't particularly surprising, coming from a man who has called President Obama "Muslim" and questioned the loyalty of the two Muslim members of Congress.

It's not that they don't share in the glorious liberal vision. They don't have a coherent, rational vision. When they can figure out how to address problems without lying to the American public and themselves, and by putting forward their own proposals rather than merely shouting down others, perhaps I'll be able to vote for them again.

I am hardly one who loves the Glorious Liberal Vision, nor am I a fan of single-party domination. Anyone here will be happy to tell you so. But the Republican Party, right here, right now, is at best utterly incompetent and at worst flailing around in impotent rage over the election of a black man.

I'd love to have a federal government that's somewhat equally divided between two or more political parties.

There's no way in hell that I'd want the modern GOP to be one of those parties, however.

If the conservative wing of the modern Democratic party were the most right-wing party in Congress and competed against a Green Party and a smattering of Libertarians and an aged, wheezing contingent of 2-3 Republicans, I'd be pleased as punch.

Well there are two options here, really, each of which are equally justified by his posting history. Either he's a troll, or just not that bright. While the former is more likely (especially given his name), the latter is much more amusing, in that from his side of things, the forum pretty much is a hive mind in that he posts something stupid, and immediately has everyone against him telling (see his particularly dim declaration of 'why do gays get to oppress me?' that derailed the last thread - just please don't drag it into here).

Cao didn't have to vote for it, but then again he didn't have to vote for it. It was a completely irrelevant vote (especially so when it was cast), so why not just side with his party and strengthen the message of the mission? Personally, I say good for him for actually putting his constituents ahead of partisan politics for once.
