Thanks for all the feedback and critiques everyone, especially AoB.
I'm not liking this new pseudo-anime, saturated change in your art.

    I really couldn't agree more. :(

This work is for a client and this style was chosen. It's a casual narrative project, so I think it works, but it does go against the grain for me.

Done with this one...albeit all of its flaws. But as always every critique is appreciated very much.

I pretty much love this, especially being a fan of black and white subtractive drawing

Although her shoes look a bit out of place. She's got such large feet, I kind of expect the hands to be big too. The buckles on the shoes are also a bit awkward. They lack the finer detail of the gun and the belt, which makes them stand out.

I was going to post this in the "how far we've come" thread but I decided I really didn't want to draw it again. Anyway, it was done in 1989 using 3 pencils, hb, 2b, 6b, and is a large drawing.

So I learned about al.chemy.org from Ikage's thread, and I love this software already. I made this in just a few minutes with it - it has a completely different look than my usual, maybe because I'm not so worried about zooming in and out, and am using more than one size of brush instead.

if you remove that harde edge on the nose and make the transition more smoother (or in other words curved rather then boxy) it would make him look sillier

I don't think so, the hippo shaped nose is pretty goofy. I would stress the amount the nose scrunches up, that flesh ridge under the eyes. it was stronger in the doodle.

also, here's the loose layout for the reduction print I'm doing this weekend. 5" x 8" the blue border will be printed.

    It is better.

Now I would suggest to stop leaving the eyes out like that, and that your edges are still kind of soft and cotton-candy plasticky round if that makes any sense. There is very little sense of the planarity of the face here, it ends up making it look like a cheap venetian mask or something.

I think you should make a few value studies of asaro head photographs, like this one.

Expanding on that a bit, you may want to try doing a 2-tone value study when starting out, just to force yourself to pay attention to your edgework, without getting caught up in the full value range from the get go. Just stick to a white and a flat medium grey, and use the fluctuations of edge quality to get the form to read. Think Mike Mignola inks if he airbrushed a few edges to soften and roll the form. I did some photoshop levels magic to strip down a lot of your values and tried it on your head here:

    tam_head.jpg

While your edges are generally fairly soft, you can see from my breakdown where I'm making them hard on drastic changes in plane, like the top of the tip, and on cast shadows. More rounded areas, like the cheek, are made softer. Watch how some edges start hard and then soften as they go along, not staying with one edge type along its length.

Once you've got your form reading with edges, it's much easier to go ahead into your full value range and keep things consistent.

Looking better already, though. A lot better, in fact. :^:

Might want to watch out for overemphasizing the roundness of the cheek where in comes against the muzzle, though- putting too much tonal emphasis can give you a sorta "Planet of the Apes mask" effect. It should still be there, but it should be subtle on a neutral expression. This new picture is better than the last two when it comes to that, but it's still something to look out for. Playing up the cheek that much is more appropriate for smiling/open mouth expressions, where the edge of the cheek is being lifted and squished outwards, creating a greater roundness.

    tam_head_2.jpg
Yeah that smile's pretty creepy looking but man painting smiles is hard and it's 4 in the damn morning.

More playing around in al.chemy. I'm learning to love the concept of drawing with shapes instead of lines. There is no "erase" or "undo" (that I'm aware of), so it's been a lesson in moving forward quickly instead of obsessing over getting things right.
