Wanting to Upgrade Graphics Card, Need Some Help

tardcoretardcore Registered User regular
Guys, so this is the computer I'm dealing with (specs in the link):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107710

I am wanting to upgrade the rather poopy graphics card with something a little more current. I was looking at the Radeon HD 4870, but I'm not sure if I have to get a new power supply or not. I'd like to avoid getting a new power supply all together, but I'd still like to be able to play Crysis on something other than low settings. If you know of a better recommendation or have some thoughts, I'd really very much appreciate it.

That's a "Deactivated Item," meaning they do not currently have any in stock and will not be getting anymore for the time being if ever. Unless you mean you already have one of those.

Anyway according to the commments section that thing has a 350watt power supply. That will need upgrading before you can really do anything with the system.

This PSU should cover your for awhile. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003

Yes, forgot to mention I already own that computer. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll check out that PSU.

Pretty much anything from the GTX line will be awesome.
But you will definately need a new PSU. Check the needed wires before buying both.

I didn't, and ended up spending an extra 90 bucks :(. Learn from my mistake, padewan!

And, sadly, perform worse than an equivalently-priced Radeon.

Edit: but it looks like the computer only has PCI Express x16, and the only compatible cards I can find on newegg are some very generation-before-last nvidia cards. That seems a bit off... on the plus side, they're all pretty cheap... and lame. Sorry, I'm not really seeing a very good upgrade option. :(

A good source for benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/video/ Read any article and you can see the reviewed product compared with a dozen other contemporary video cards.

PCI-E is back compatible with PCI-E 2.0 AFAIK.

    Might as well ask my own question in here;

I currently have a 9100 (came with the pc), and a 300w psu. Am I correct in that the best card I can get without a new psu is a 9600gt, and is that enough of an upgrade from a 9100 to be worthwhile?

Hmmmm. First of all anything you get will be a huge, huge improvement. Your best bet is probably trying a card with an ATI 4670 in it. It doesn't need an extra power connector unlike a 9600GT.

To know for sure we'd have to know more details about your PSU (mostly how many amps it can put out on it's 12V rail) and CPU. It might also help if we knew how much you were looking to spend and what your monitor's native resolution is.

Ok guys, so based on your suggestions and the help of my more-experienced-than-me brother, I ordered the following:

    - XFX Radeon HD 4870

    - SeaSonic 500W PSU

My GTX 280 handles everything thrown at it without shuddering.

    I honestly recommend it.

Good to know, but I think you meant to swap those two nouns.

They are very fast but they are really hard to find and the price is higher than AMD was planning so they aren't quite the awesome deal that they seemed to be at launch.
