Fight scene

I'm in a stage combat class and for the second half of the semester we have to prepare a scene with a fight in it. I've been trying to find some suitable scenes but none of the plays and few of the movies I'm familiar with have suitable scenes (we can do scenes from plays or films). Ideally there's some kind of build-up through dialogue that either results in a fight between two male characters or could conceivably result in a fight, even if the original script didn't call for one. We're allowed to tweak it a bit, like if there are weapons involved (we're doing unarmed only) or extra characters that aren't important to the scene. Can anyone think of a good scene that might meet these guidelines? Obscure is better; Darth Vader vs Luke is a bit hard to pull off.

Any of the fights from the Die Hard movies. It allows you to mess around with styles, too, depending on which fight you pick.

Indiana Jones is good, those fights are highly theatrical and exagerrated in nature.

Im' thinking in particular the Mechanic vs. Indy in Raiders

I should clarify that we're not exactly reenacting the fight so much as applying the scene surrounding it to choreography that we'll be given.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

Something that occurs in an underground/multistory carpark. Fights in those places look great.

personally i think you should pursue the 'create a fight' idea. you'll show creativity, and if you choose a particularly clever one you might really impress your instructor.

What sort of body types do your actors have?

You could try doing the fight at the end of On the Waterfront.

Or, let's see... there's a cool fight near the end of True West (kinda obscure, I guess- it's by Sam Shepard) where the only weapon used is a telephone.

Heh. You could always do the fight between Ralph and Scut Farkus from A Christmas Story.

Jesus you guys are missing the biggest point

"I want you to hit me as hard as you can"

because the film really did not elaborate on the fight itself it leaves a lot of room to do some improv, just make sure you two are suitting on a crub with a bottle of jack at the end.

Get the last season of Deadwood, and take a look at the fight between Dan and the Captain. Only really works if you're both big guys, though. Lots of grappling, a near-drowning, and an eye getting torn out.

The fight between Bond and the badguy (whose name I don't know) in the bathroom at the beginning of Casino Royale was pretty good, plus one of you would get to drown in a sink.

I think the Fight Club ideas above are great (that's what I first thought of).

There's a good fight between two highschool kids in A History of Violence.

If you could get more than two people you could potentially do a scene from Oldboy, which is a Korean movie. The scene I'm thinking of has the hero fighting ~15 people in a hallway. All of the badguys are unarmed, and the hero has a hammer. It looks very painful.

I highly recommed the Cool Hand Luke fight. Good combination of character development and brutality.

Another good one would be the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid scene where the gang tries to mutiny. If i recall, that ends up being a pretty quick fight, but you can play with that a bit.

Both of those are pretty one sided fights.

If you want something more equal or befitting eastern martial arts, I'd recommend the school fight (or any other) in Jet Li's Fist of Legend.

Unfortunately, western cultures frown upon arranged marriages, so the vast majority of people have to take risks in order to get into relationships.

If you guys practiced a lot on the Narrator v. Angel scene and could really capture the brutality. Maybe you could even get extras to react to the fight itself? I think that would be very powerful and lead to one of those uncomfortable silences in the middle of class.

It's a wonderful life - George vs Clarence. "i'll ring your bell so many times every angel will have two sets of wings!"

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. It's what the cripple fight in South Park was based off of, too.

Thanks guys, this is a great list. We're putting together a few to give to the instructor so he can tell us what will work w/ the choreography. Right now we're looking at the Bridget Jones' one, a couple from Fight Club (between Lou and Tyler, Narrator and Tyler in the garage), one from the Sopranos (Tony kills Ralph), and the one between Clarence and Drexl in True Romance (gotta love Tarantino dialogue). I'll bring up the one from They Live too; that one made me crack up. It's hard to pick b/c we don't know the choreography yet, but this should give us a good range to choose from.
