"Hermaphrodite" and "intersexed" are not necessarily synonymous. Both are clinical terms. Hermaphrodites posses both male and female genitalia. Human hermaphrodites are extremely rare. Intersexed individuals posess a non-typical mix of masculine and feminine features. All hermaphrodites are intersexed, but very few intersexed humans are hermaphrodites.

I'm fine with the whole "Don't call them hermaphrodites" thing, because it's almost certain to make your speech more technically correct.
The chances of a person ever needing to refer to a hermaphrodite outside of a clinical setting are pretty much nil. You may run into a few intersexed individuals, though.

But it was described as an offensive and "outdated" term when it really is not or shouldn't be. It's a complicated situation that shouldn't be boiled down to semantics in the first place.

I could see people getting offended when it's misapplied, like how some people call all vaguely middle-Eastern people "Arabs".
I can see people getting offended over a lot of other things, including technically correct clinical terms, but people can be pretty silly.
It's certainly not outdated. There aren't any other English terms it could accurately be replaced with.
Just because it's correct doesn't mean it won't piss people off.
People get pissed off about lots of things.
Yeah but I don't care when people get pissed about things that are correct.
Is it correct, though?
Hermaphroditism is so rare in humans that it can't really be said with any certainty that it's ever happened.
I can pretty much guarantee you will never have the opportunity to accurately apply the label to a person in your day-to-day life.
Well yeah, I stated that in an earlier post.
But moreso I was referring to the fact that if I were referring to a hermaphrodite, I could still say that and anyone who got all uppity about it would be incorrect.
