    it's february, not febuary

    Dictionary.com sez it's standard.

dictionary.com is a descriptivist dictionary. That means that it gauges how most people pronounce it, but unfortunately does not take into account dialects. Now, were he speaking ebonics, I wouldn't have said anything, because in general february is pronounced febuary. However, in Standard Written English, which is what this guy was speaking, it is pronounced february.

People say lieberry all the time, that doesn't mean it is not pronounced lie-brary.

February comes from that latin month named after februum, purification, because it was the last month in the calendar and you were purifying yourself for a new year.

    February is the correct pronunciation.

Who would teach our country to say things incorrectly?

    That'd be a nucular mistake.

And August comes from the Latin for Octavius. Doesn't prevent language from being an evolving process.

No, no it doesn't. Octavius took the name Caeser, and he was lauded as Caeser Augustus -- honorable caeser. So August comes from August.

I am all for the fluid and dynamic nature of language. However, I am also for not allowing ignorance and stupidity to be the driving force behind this evolution.

You shouldn't end a sentence in a participle. He who acts in such a way is he whom with I shall not side.

Of course I am. But I also believe that there are 1000s of micro-languages which are held together by prescriptive lingua francas, Standard Written English / Queen's English being our central one.

I for one would enjoy the system of 12 months of 30 days plus 5.25 special days where everyone but me gets to have sex.
