man my "style" doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I mean, I feel like I have some recognizable traits (mostly flaws) But I really seem to be reaching for nothing in particular and everything all at once.

Lovely as always, although thanks to the colouring and the pose I immediately thought "flamingo" instead of "vulture'.
it has an animal in it, therefore i made it hahahah
i feel like my texture useage sort of gives me away
and whispy lines like the hairs... i use that shit a lot
i also seem to use a lot of the same colors...
eh, i don't really mind not having a style, i feel i'm pretty versatile for the most part, and it gets me work so whatever, but I always have people be like "i like your style beav!" and then i completely change it, so i often wonder if those same people hate whatever i decide is the flavor of the week.

i've been toying with the idea of taking his digital painting class cause he's a god
the question is, spend 500$ for the one where he doesn't give you personal crits or 1000$ for the one where he does

I know what you mean. I've never been able to trace a consistent line between one of my pieces to the next. My shit is all over the place. It gets frustrating.
But from where I'm sitting, I have no problem whatsoever recognizing your artwork. I could pick that shit out of a police line-up like it was nothing, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.
I think most of us criticize ourselves way to harshly. Like, at least 95% of us, 95% of the time. And anyone who doesn't needs to be taken down a fucking notch or two in my opinion.
Oh, and that buzzard is top-fucking-notch. Nice job on the neck detail.

Each of us is too far involved with our own thing, and too overly concerned to notice the more positive attributes. The ones that come across more obviously to our respective audiences. Things like style.

I can absolutely say without regret or remorse that I have no style. To be honest, at my stage of the game, style is not something I want to be tied to just yet....if ever.
To be perfectly honest though, I would be falling over with excitement if someone compared me to The Chiu.

And there are already too many people going the ultra-realistic route and the Craig Mullins wannabe speed paint look. I could see you taking your recent experiments in a kind of Lou Romano style.
If you're looking to develop a Bobby Chiu-ish kinda look, the main thing that's setting you apart from him here (composition, choice of color, and silhouette design are pretty close) is that you're stuff is still very line based, owing to your vector background, while he is very form based, even though he uses a lot of soft forms and low-contrast values to keep things from looking too disturbingly realistic.
For example, the details on the neck you've put in these linear wrinkles, with a bit of highlight to pop them out a bit and get a hint of form. What he would go with would be probably to round out the form in between those lines in a softly defined way, so it would look more like a tower of uncooked mini-donuts that's been squished into shape, rather than a series of lines that have been etched onto a cylinder. Also, while he uses a lot of soft shading, he doesn't shy away from harder edges in cast shadows to help define form. Example, you've got a cast shadow from the head being cast onto the neck, But between the softness of the edge being drawn across the neck and the rimlight in there, it makes the area a bit ambiguous- where does the cast shadow end and the form shadow begin?
I'm not necessarily advocating you try to replicate his stuff so much, but just bringing the differences to your attention, in case you want to try pushing in that direction.
The only thing that really drew my eye away from the overall picture is that most of your edges have a lot of care with your rendering or added glow to soften them, except the brow above its eye. Compared to all the other coloring it just seems to be the harshest jump in color and value. Its not wrong or bad looking at all, it just stand out to me personally, almost as if it's there to draw the attention to its eyeball area.
I didn't read all of the other posts 100% so if you mentioned this, or someone else did, I apologize.

chilly: i don't see drawing attention to the eyes as necessarily a bad thing, that's typically what an artist wants to go for, lots of attention in the part that expresses the most about the character.
but i mean, i'm willing to do some fiddling around if people agree it needs work

My only complaint is that the white feels too white- it's blinding and almost makes it hard to see the other details around it and decipher what things are.

I dunno, even baby vultures creep me out a bit. An animal that would be perfectly happy to pluck my eyes from my skull while I'm dying of thirst and starvation doesn't strike my d'awwww string. I can respect a tiger or a lion wanting to kill me, there's no dicking around y'know "I'm totally going to kill and eat you now", but vultures, hyenas and african wild dogs....they give me the heeby jeebies.
for today i decided to do a detailed bone study
which turned into doing a study of the bones of a my little pony.
it was fun though
stylizing something as complex as animal bones and muscles is a neat challenge

Too bad that My Little Ponies are so wildly inaccurate when it comes to anatomy. I mean that skull is right on for a MLP, but it looks nothing like an actual horse skull. That's not a critique on you though! More like one on MLP's themselves. I mean, horses just don't have those chubby, nub-like heads in real life.
My only crit would be that the Pony's left front leg (the one closest to the viewer) looks a little stubby, and disproportionate compared to it's front right leg (furthest from the viewer).
Great work, beav. This one definitely has more of your style in it than the buzzard, imo (Though the buzzard is still fantastic).
When I think beavotron, I think clever word play and vivid colours conveyed with a cartoon style based in reality. While this doesn't have vivid colours (they're good, and appropriate) it definitely has the clever playfulness down.
You have a way of making nature (and zombies) more friendly, I guess.
I don't know if that helps, but that's what I think of your stuff.
