    I will likely be playing a character using my forum. Torn between Medic and Robotic, so gonna take advantage of beta to see which I prefer.

    Also, do we want to start trying to coordinate a group among us? Based on my experience with PA groups, it's not worth trying to organize and lead a formal guild/corp/whatever you call them in this given game, but we could at least start out playing with each other.

    I'd be down for this. But not starting one or leading or whatever. I'm a follower.

    PA MMO groups tend to be rather successful; the Eve corp and many WoW guilds are still cranking along.

    I wonder if I'm still guildmaster of The Candymancers?

    Eve and WoW are the only two MMO's that have sustained PA populations, and both of those have had shake-ups where specific guilds come and go.

    I recommend that those of us who play together just find some other group and zerg into it.

    Compared to the general population I think we do rather well. I doubt we could sustain the population required to run a proper agency on our own though. Zerg it is!

    I dunno, the game is kinda like EVE only on the ground. We could eventually do something like Merch.

    EDIT: And my friend GAVE AWAY the extra copy of GA to my brother, so...I guess we don't need a fourth. Sorry, I didn't expect him to suddenly become altruistic.

    So I got the game on Steam and can't install the beta. The site says I should be able to install the beta, but Steam says "Oh no, you need to link your account." But the FAQ says I need to install the tiny beta client first so I can get a code or such.

    This fills me with optimism.

    The account linking worked well, it was just terribly explained. As I recall what I had to do was find the actual GA- Beta listed in steam (which wasn't at the top of my uninstalled games like plain ole Global Agency was) and when I installed it, it said to link it and then launched a page which auto filled in my beta key and such (since I was already logged into the GA site).

    If that's not working, I imagine you can make an account on the GA site and then go in and manually fill in everything to link it. The beta key you can get, as you likely know, but right-clicking the GA Beta and selecting View Game CD Key.
    Then sign up at the GA site.
    Then go to the main page > manage account > beta registration.

    I found the beta. I can't install it. It demands I link it to my account. View Game CD Key? Hahahaha, nope, not there. That goes for Manage Game as well.

    Can't do shit with it, so I'm gonna post on the forums. They reply often, at least.

    Yeah, if I hadn't gone through this mess when setting up my Eve trial I never would have figured it out. Once you know to go to the website from inside the Steam client it's reasonably painless though.

    The thing is, it wouldn't let me. It told me to do it, without having a link open. Then, at seemingly random, it doesn't given me an error but a link. After that it's fairly intuitive.

    Going to probably play an assault with a chaingun, or if for some reason I hate the assault I will probably go with drone robotics.

    heh steam;

    Install Size: 51mb.
    ~20 minutes later at 1.5mb/s minimum it's finally done. Final size, 6gb.

    Needed a new MMO to play after trying to enjoy Champions Online and failing, this looked right up my street so I caved in and bought it.

    Looking forward to the beta, gonna get a PA group going? Considering scout or robotics to begin with, though I enjoy playing healers, so who knows.

    Fixed my error. In case anyone else gets stuck with steam trying to install DirectX or .net, you need to change some registry keys. Change PR1-4 from 0 to 1.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\17020]
    "PR1"=dword:00000001
    "PR2"=dword:00000001
    "PR3"=dword:00000001

    Story

    2155. From the ashes of the devastating Third Great War rose the Commonwealth, an oppressive world government determined to control the entire planet. The few remaining independent factions retaliate the only way they can, with elite teams of special operatives trained in advanced warfare tactics and equipped with high-tech weaponry. The future of humanity is their battleground, where knowledge is power, technology is a race, and everyone has a Global Agenda.

    Darkewolfe FAQ

    What in the who now?

    It's an MMOFPS. Think Modern Warfare crossed with Team Fortress 2 crossed with World of Warcraft crossed with Borderlands with some Eve Online thrown in.

    That's not helping.

    Players create a character (agent) from one of four classes. This character has persistent stats, skill points, equipment and levels which the player will improve as they play. However, like Modern Warfare, levels aren't everything. While being higher level will give you more options and some extra chances to min/max, a low level player with skill can easily defeat a max level player who is, at heart, a n00b. This is because the gameplay is based around classic first-person shooters. You will have to aim, you will jump around, you will use cover effectively. The gameplay actually looks pretty Tribes-like in some ways.

    You said Eve Online. What?

    This game is using the free-to-play, optional subscription model that Hellgate: London tried out. Hopefully it will suck less. When not subscribing you basically have a standard FPS that you can zoom through, with some Borderlands-style PvE content (based around squads of four) for good measure. This means most of your time you'll either be dropping into team-based matches like Team Fortress 2, or running around with your buds shooting PvE mobs looking for loot.

    Players who pay the optional subscription fee will have access to a ground-control war scenario, where "Agencies" (guilds, corporations, whatever) compete to control zones for in-game boosts. These boosts range from crafting stuff to prestige titles and such. These zones will be very, very sought after. Agencies choose which timezones they are most active in, and during those times they will be challenged for control of their zone, with the FPS match-ups resolving the challenges. The designers, Hi-Rez, tell us that there will be politics and espionage involved in the Agency wars. This may come through the need to hire independent mercenary players to support you, or in other, unknown ways.

    Tell me about levels.

    There are 30 of them. Skillpoints (probably like WoW talents or the Borderlands skill tree) are involved. There are also levels 31-100, which just involve titles and other prestigious things.

    Classes:

    Ok, someone mentioned classes. This is relevant to my interests.

    You have four base classes. Each player can have up to 8 characters without subscribing (10 if you do), so you will be able to have multiple characters, each with different skill and gear setups. The classes are:

    Assault

    "This heavy weapons specialist is clad in the thickest armor available, allowing for a sustained presence on the open battlefield while laying down a withering barrage of explosive firepower."

    The Assault class looks to be the most standard soldier type. They can set up their skills to increase their damage, tankiness and some specialty skills. It has been referenced that they will vary between roles such as the Heavy (able to sustain lots of fire while running down the field blasting at opponents) to Demolitions (equipped to use explosives to destroy enemy structures and robots).

    Recon

    "Stealth and speed are the main allies of the recon agent, who also uses subversion and misdirection to confound an enemy force while executing lightning fast ambushes against individual opponents."

    Expect this to be the most overplayed character type. They can cloak, they move faster, they seem to be able to use sniper rifles and some of them use katanas.

    Medic

    "The medic strikes an effective balance between distributing healing effects to keep companions alive and unleashing nightmarish toxins on unfortunate enemies."

    LF1M Medic, Then GTG! The medic is the healer of the classes. However, they can also specialize in biological weapons, poisons and general nasty damage dealing. So, more DOT's.

    Robotic

    "By using the latest technology to gain the upper hand, the robotics agent is able to defend strategic points with turrets and forcefields, or press forward by using remote control combat robots."

    The Robotic class is a pet-class camper. They defend your strategic points and use drones to hit the enemy. Videos make them look to be a bit weaker in direct combat, but that's what you have a turret that fires bolts of plasma for, right?
