this year, it was no doubt the Nintendo DS. people pictochatting, showing each other their virtual penises, etc.

by PAX time next year, what'll be the next big thing to hit the market? i mean, all the new systems should be out by then... but will the handhelds still reign supreme in the minds of gamers?

Why wouldn't they? The DS is nearly a year old as is, I doubt it'll be any less popular next year, especially with Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and more being available.

Somebody in a pictochat room I was in while waiting to get into Saturday night's concert kept asking me if I was an artist after I repeatedly drew stupid anime faces and zombies with big eyes. That pretty much sealed the deal for me on the DS (which I bought specifically for PAX). I'd be surprised if it didn't make a major comeback next year.

I'm still amazed how many more DSs there were than PSPs.

Is it true PSP only has one game capable of sharing so far? That might be why.

Next year everybody will be throwing down the Mario Kart DS and Metroid Prime Hunters... This year the big game that I noticed was Meteos, though even though I own the game and it can be shared anyways, I never played multiplayer on it... I kept forgetting my DS when I went to PAX and only really played it thursday night with some Bomberman in the Doubletree ballroom.

What are the PSP titles planned for release in time for PAX 05?

(I think I now why I felt like I was missing something all PAX)

I thought this thread was going to be about what big game will be showing. For example PAX04 had Halo2, PAX05 had Zelda etc and I think F.E.A.R. was there too.

I think PAX05 was really missing a big game exposition to tie it all together the way Halo2 did the first year. What would be a good game to do that in 06? A PSP title? A DS title? 360, PS3?

I ddi see Zelda, however did you not see the massive line for Halo 2 when it showed at pax? I mean yeah, Zelda, amazing. Nintendo, Keepers of the Tradition of orgasmically good games...

However I am sure a fair amount of people showed up at PAX 05 for Zelda alone, but an absurd amount of people showed up for Halo 2 alone. I am just saying that anticipation is everything. And while you did really like seeing Zelda there wasn't something to really make me salivate all weekend until the unvieling of it. I think that an Expo needs to have one beg headliner and Halo 2 was it last year. This year there wasn't one MAJOR thing to tie it all together. IMO. However that is not what this thread is aboutat all.
This is the question I am asking: What will be the big headliner next year?

You're right that there wasn't one major thing to focus on - there were a lot of little things. The pirate ship game was big, nintendogs was big, and pictochat was HUGE, but there wasn't one thing that everyone was there for. I'm not sure which way I prefer, because this gave everyone their own niches to fill whereas if there was one giant release then everyone would be in line for that and everything else would be close to ignored. Then again there's not a huge release to remember "I WAS THERE!"

Yeah for a couple of days afgter the convention I was really upset at every one and I didn't know why and I finally figured out it was because every one else was haing fun playing with dogs and drawing penus'. I never regreted trading in my DS so much.

The hype last year for Halo 2 was largely contrived. For one, Halo 2 was only on display for a short amount of time, during the latter half of the day, and in order to actually play it one had to acquire a ticket and wait in a ridiculous line (actually, the line wasn't that long, but the wait sure as hell was).

And I also strongly doubt Halo 2 had an appreciable impact on attendance last year. If anything, one could argue Zelda had a larger impact this year because of attendance being nearly three times what it was during PAX 04. Sure, it wasn't officially announced that Zelda was going to be at the show, but it was virtually unofficially confirmed by Nintendo's strong sponsorship.

    graizur wrote:

Well, if you're defining the "next big thing" as whatever makes you salivate, then of course you're going to clearly be oblivious to the impact Zelda made at the show. At any given time there were at least 20 people watching the large monitor, and even more during peak hours (and I suspect the crowd size would be even larger were it not for the limited booth size itself)

Beyond the enormous persistent audience, just reading various people's opinions on PAX, as compared to last year, has yielded far more impressions of Zelda than Halo 2. Again, this is likely due in part to the larger attendance, but I'm seeing very few facts to support your assertion that Zelda wasn't a big thing.

Ummm... why hasn't anybody mentioned the PS3 or the Revolution?

I mean, we didn't see the XB360, but that's because it's obviously going to be Microsoft's Saturn (i.e. "ha, we can out-market anybody who waits and makes a superior product!).

Also, I don't count Microsoft as actually being there. Were they seriously demoing Fuzion Frenzy and Kung Fu Chaos? That actually drove me away.

The revolution would be so perfect to expo at PAX next year. You coul;dn't tailor make a convention more suited to Nintendo's american expo needs. It would be so freaking awesome.

AS far as the PS3 that would be miraculous. A major PS3 showing at PAX 06 would suprise me though because Sony hasn't touched PAX at all.

Oh, seeing Revolution at Pax would be a great reason to go for my first year.

And I'd bring a lot of liquor, so I could get really drunk and then tea bag Mario... while Luigi watches.

You never know - Sony had a couple presenters on the panels.

The thing with Microsoft was that was the Playtest group. They weren't there to show you stuff. They were recruiting just like the Army guys.

Yes, I was a poor showing, and it's one of the things I'll be asking if I get a chance at the Women in Gaming conference this weekend - there's going to be a big Microsoft presence there and I want to know why they weren't at PAX both as women in the game industry (of which there were none on the panels) and with a decent expo showing. I'd like to know if any of them were even there as gamers, for that matter.

An interactive REVOLUTION showing at PAX )^ would be tremendous. I think we have shown that this Expo is legit, usefull and going to be around for a while. I mean we went from 3,000 attendees to around 9,000. If there was a big official nintendo showing at PAX 06 I would totally expect 12,000 people to show up. Which begs another question, how many is too many? Do you think that warrents another thread?

But I think a dream PAX 06 demo would be closed out at like 9thou preregistered people and it's just a place where we come and game publishers give us hand job class demonstrations of their games. You know, intimate, personal, satisfying.
