40 years old, in his parent's basement, a huge pile of fast food garbage surrounding him, the smell so bad that the people next door are starting to complain.
Edit: Any word on the servers? I'd like to hit 11 tonight.
People are going to be admirals before the head start is over. I'm not sure whether to laugh, cry, or pity the fools who played for 18hrs/day.
You always..... always pity him, because he's the type that will then announced to the world that he's beaten the game, complain that there is nothing to do, no one NOT to do it with, and then move on to the next carrot.
Edit: I will say this though, if enough people DO reach Admiral, I'm going to vomit if they try and fix it by adding more mobs to each mission. Cause when I do create a Fed char, eventually, I'm going to not want to grind my dick off like with this Klink.

True. Although I'm not so sure you even need to be that type of person to hit admiral by then. I mean, I'm leveling fairly slowly (will hit Lt Cmdr and maybe a bit more tonight...if the servers cooperate), but I'm almost certain I'll at least have captain by tuesday morning.
So how conservative should my Klingon character be with his energy credits?
I just dinged him 11, and was running around Quo'Nos, and noticed that a very few merchants sold ground combat gear for up to 3k and I think I have around 12k stockpiled.
Also, is there ever any way to manually name your BOs or Ships? I got to name my first ship, but when I claimed my rank 11 ship, I didnt see where I could name it.
Since I have quit WoW, and I am eagerly awaiting the Star Wars MMO, I was thinking about getting into this or EVE to hold me over until next spring. Any of you guys who have played STO and EVE, which would you recommend?

in the (u)nit [??] menu, where you can equip stuff to your ship, there is a rename button at the bottom left. I believe as long as you do not take your ship out of earthdock (or similar) you can change the appearance once and the name once without paying anything.

At the moment there are very few vendors on the Klingon side that even work. Worse comes to worse, you can mail items to yourself from your other character.

You can take it out of spacedock. You get one free appearance change (excluding bridge) and one free rename/reregistry, and you can use those anytime. You might have to be in the spacedock to rename the ship, though.

I'm not completely sure i can recommend sto at this point, but I can wholeheartedly recommend you stay the hell away from eve if you like fun.

Picking up a lot of chatter on the channel from eve players so they should be able to answer this.
I'd say go with this since you'll feel like you'll accomplish more in the a given time than you will with EVE.
Flying around, blowing shit up and the occasional escort/find the blinky mission.
Besides, the intro is voiced by Leonard Nimoy. Let's see EVE do that.

Chiming in on this:
STO will give you a great "hop in and accomplish something immediately" play style. It has far more visual customization of your avatar and ship than eve. Also, the combat is much more visceral, ie. your direct steering of the ship, and running around in ground combat.
Overall content still conforms to the usual MMO standards though. The episodes are fairly well written, but it all boils down to fly here, shoot ships, click glowy, repeat.
Eve is a very long term, sloooow game. We're talking years here for some plans. You'll go anywhere from hours-days with little to nothing happening then shit hits the fan and you'll have some of the most adrenaline pumping battles you've experienced in an mmo. Losses are real and hurt. There is no hand holding and you choose what you want to do.
There is a big disconnect between ship, avatar, and player though. No visual cusomization past the initial portrait, and all the ships look the same. The abstract "click move" combat and obscure calculations lead to the common description of "spreadsheets in space."
I really enjoy both though, so TL;DR
STO - More WoW'esque gameply in space
Eve - different....pick up a free trial and hit up the thread for tips. It's not for everyone, but for some it's THE game.
Alright, guys. Thanks for your help. I'll give EVE's tutorial a shot after I have my discrete math test on Tuesday since it's free, but STO does look enjoyable. My mom was best friends with Levar Burton in college. Maybe I can get a hook up or something.
Using this, this is the route I'm going with naming my ships:
Light Cruiser - USS Manchester
Cruiser - USS Richmond
Heavy Cruiser - USS Newport News
Galaxy Class - USS Virginia
Which leads me to a problem. What do I name the last ship? USS Will fuck your mother?
I'm thinking, I'll probably name it after a person, since that's roughly what Carriers do. So, USS George S. Patton?
Yay, hit level 11 and got a real ship. I forget how much better it feels. Turns out there are some PvP vendors in Klingon space I didn't know about, so getting my Klingon to 11 is tomorrow's goal.
So after seeing multiple "omg cruisers are broken" threads the general consensus on the official forums seems to be that cruisers as currently implemented are horrible. From exploration onwards it takes around a full minute to do a turn, so they're constantly falling behind in PVE (apparently turning consoles don't help that much since they're a percentage boost either) and they're very ineffective in pvp due to being unable to move fast enough to present different shields. This is making me kinda rethink my planned cruiser path. Are the forums blowing things completely out of proportion as usual or are engineers better off in science vessels right now?
Good fucking god. Talk about overfucking powered. Two science officers spam healed one another through a ground pvp match. There was NOTHING anyone could do, sans a random lucky expose. Look at this shit. I'm Caina, btw.
For those of you behind firewall. I did 5700 damage and only get 11 kills. Their top spot has 5100 and has 25. How you, you ask? A combined 6500 healing between 2 people spamming holds and heals. Sigh..... My deaths are inflated because after 25 mins of minutes of slamming my dick into the wall, I just ran to them and showed them my back.
I feel pretty qualified to address the whole cruisers vs. everything else debate. I played an escort to level 25 or so in the beta, and I'm playing a cruiser now, currently level 14. (Cpt. Evil Lincoln of the U.S.S. Reverse-Gettysburg)
The cruiser is a very different ship from the escort- it's slow, hard to turn, and basically feels like a tub. It doesn't mount the firepower of an escort either.
What it does well is take hits. If you've got a couple of talents for shield regeneration, that fucker will live forever. I've sat through 3-4 minute fights versus multiple opponents and won just by grinding them down.
What it *doesn't* do well, in my experience at least, is hold aggro. If you power into a pull under full impulse, you'll get everything shooting at you initially. No matter what you do though, the second an escort opens up on something it's going to rip aggro. I haven't found a solution for this yet.
So basically the cruiser as it stands right now is a slow, tough, moderately damaging version of the escort. If it had some more aggro-holding abilities it would make a fine tank. As it is, you're basically there to watch the escorts do all the work while you focus on taking down a shield facing or two, or tab-target to try to hold threat.

It is what it is. I expect they'll rebalance all of this before too long- in the meantime I'll have fun piloting the biggest things in space. It's not impossible to do damage with a cruiser, it's just that you're not going to top any charts. I solo things just fine.
I'm probably doing something wrong with the aggro holding, I'm still pretty new to cruisers. I'm playing with beam-fire at will right now, that plus a broadside will grab a pretty big group. Still can't hold it though.
have non tank all focus fire. tank tanks 90 ships while the rest focus fire on one ship. yes they'll pull aggro butt they're being shot by one while you tank 9 other ships

How do you do that anyway? I haven't been able to figure it out.

I get up to finally get my ship after last night's crash. And it goes down again. At least next week all the non-retail keys will fizzle out and population should drop a bit.

So make sure the bar is full and then it tells the truth?
