Man. People irritate me sometimes. My housemates made some fried rice last night. They had a ton left over. Rather than be like "Hey dude. You want some rice?" they threw it in the garbage. If they had eaten it all or even put it in the fridge, that would be one thing. But the garbage? Really? Fuck you guys.

Yea, I like Jeff Matsuda style for Jackie Chan Adventures, but it didn't fit for Batman...also the voice actor doesn't pull him off the same.

As long as good cartoons keep appearing, regardless of the channel they are on, i'll be happy.

Archer, for instance, is on FX yet it still hits my funny bone pretty damn well.

My main problem with Nickelodeon is that ever since the closing of Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, they pretty much walked away from everything that made the station a real draw for kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. I'm not talking "kid-friendly programming;" I mean the insane game shows, the actually decent plot-driven shows, and the slime. WHERE IS THE SLIME?!!

The only show I've seen recently that has even remotely embraced what used to make Nick so great is this new game show they're putting on now called "BrainSurge." It's essentially the same concept as Picture Perfect back in the day (a game based around short-term visual memorization), but every single contestant is going to go home a mess one way or another, either covered in pie or dumped with a few gallons of the good ol' green stuff.

I remember back in the day it was like every kid's dream to be dumped with slime on Nickelodeon. I was talking to my fiance's 13-year-old cousin (who is a modern Nick fanatic) and asked her opinion on it. She had no idea Nick even had "slime" in their repertoire, and thought it sounded "gross." NO KID SHOULD EVER SAY THAT.

What's perhaps the most disheartening above everything else is the fact that the current Nick higher-ups have no desire to ever go back to the way things used to be. All they see now is a blend between Spongebob and this crappy "TeenNick" programming, like Drake & Josh and Degrassi. I read a recent interview where one of the execs at Nick was asked about the possibility of putting the classic Nick shows on DVD, like Eureeka's Castle, Double Dare, You Can't Do That on Television, etc. The rep basically said "We're proud of our heritage as a station, but we feel the past should stay in the past. We'd much rather look forward to new content for our current demographic."

I have a three-disc DVD set of Pinwheel episodes that are nothing but bootleg copies recorded off someone's old VHS tapes. It's six hours of my childhood that I'm pretty confident will never be embraced by the original network. Hell, Nickelodeon wouldn't even EXIST if not for Pinwheel (if you know your history).

Children today don't know what they're missing.

The thing I'm wondering is that when this demographic is grown up and the stations change again. Will they be like we are now? Saying the new shows suck? Just like we are now?

Anyhoo, what I miss is cartoons being on kids WB and Foxkids 5 days a week 3pm-5pm. Guess kids need to do their homework right after school.( I grew up with rabbit ears.)

C'mon guys. Don't take change so personally, it's the natural world order. You didn't grow up with your dad's entertainment culture, it's unfair to want to make other experience life as you did. Kids today may grow up thinking that online communities is just a big a thing as Nick was to us.

A lot of people tend to forget that kids today are not like other kids growing up. They're growing up in the pioneering era of global communications. I don't know if TV is a big a part of their lives as it was for us. These are the offspring of gamers and tech junkies, you can't box them into the same lifestyle that we fit in back in the 80s - 90s

Yea, I was just coming to that realization. Seeing as that I don't even watch TV any more, I use the net. Kids are actually making cartoons and such like for Youtube and Newgrounds er whatever now adays.

A lot. It was because of Nick's decision to mimic the Disney Channel way that swayed the CN execs to pull the same shit.

Dammit, MT, you're right in that regards. Stupid generation gap. I made a post before yours, but you've pretty much taken down my entire argument in one fell swoop.

Ah well. I'll just spoiler it anyway.
It's a time to embrace the bootlegs, I suppose. I've found a few episodes of Eureeka's Castle here and there, but never a larger recording. It's a shame since there was a wealth of episodes made for the show.

I've also harvested a huge collection of old Nick shows over the years that I may burn onto standard video DVD's once I have kids. Are You Afraid of the Dark, You Can't Do That on Television, Rocko's Modern Life, Mr. Wizard, The Elephant Show, The Adventures of the Little Koala, David the Gnome... even a few scattered episodes of Count Duckula and Wild & Crazy Kids. I had a chance to grab the full series of Hey Dude, but I never really watched that show back in the day. Also I plan on picking up those "Old School Sesame Street" DVD's they have out now, from the pre-Elmo Show days. My kids are going to have the good stuff.

The best part of that Pinwheel set I mentioned is the fact that the commercial breaks are kept intact. The recordings are from VHS tapes around two different time periods -- one in the early 80's, when the station was young, and the other from around 1990. The ads and bumps for the station are crazy different from anything you'd see today.
I may think twice about it now. Admittedly there is a noticeable difference in quality between Pinwheel-era Nick shows and what they got today. Looking at older shows (Scooby Doo, Flintstones), or even older stuff like Howdy Doody, I couldn't stomach that when I was growing up. My kids will likely be the same way with my generation's shows.

I think kids these days would have a much easier time seeing through the tricks that shows like alex mack employed, so its probably harder to capture that sense of whimsy in a cheap live action show.

Either way, the nick live action shows now are still better than the Disney ones. That stupid web show one, cant think of the name, I've seen it before spongebob. Instead of make up peddling bullshit its a show I would have thought was funny at 13.

Goddamn I hated rocket power. Danny phantom was also bad, and Fairly Odd Parents got old.
