    Killing the
    Alien Brain
with a day one sergeant with a psi strength of 1 is glorious.

Especially if your entire team escorts said psi anomaly with no armor and only an alien grenade in hand for deliverance.

Also, the stadium seats in the room was neat; all the hardcore flying suits people sat in the chairs as the brain drain sacrificed himself for humanity.

    On Beginner. :(

    X-Com? Or the other one?

If it's X-Com, go to the STEAM store and read the manual. That's what I did. It helped. Partially because initially, I couldn't figure out how to shoot.

A long time ago there was going to be a Delta Green game in a similar style to X-Com where you disseminate cover stories, tell your fellow conspirators to stock U Store-its with weaponry and send your lackeys around the country battling aliens, evil sorcerors, Majestic-12, and the FBI's psych exams in turn based combats but the developers said fuck it and went on to make Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Just finished UFO Aftershock. An excellent game. I really enjoyed the RPG mechanics. It took some research and 4-5 restarts before I finally figured out the stat system but in the end it was worth it. Definitely better than Aftermath in almost every way. Only problem I had with it was the documentation of the story.

I highly recommend bumping the difficulty up. Early on I was struggling a little bit but towards the end I could have completed most missions with 1 guy. I did it on the difficulty level just above easy (veteran, I think).

Looking forward to Afterlight. I played it once a long time ago but got distracted. Now that I'm 'in' the story I think it's going to be a blast.

May want to consider looking at x-comutil as well, which at a basic level lets you tweak a number of settings. Some are basically bug-fix tweaks, whilst others are pretty blatant cheats or make the game easier/harder.
I personally wish I'd used it to nerf the psychic warfare before I did my first playthrough. Fuck having everyone in the Interceptor mind-controlled by commanders/leaders sitting in a battleship on the other side of the map.

Except XComUtil doesn't do everything it should if you're playing the Steam version, as I found out.

Unless I screwed something up. No-one else is talking about their experiences with the Steam version and XComUtil, though.

XcomUtil won't affect a game already in progress (ie save-games made before XcomUtil was run), and that could be why it's not doing all that it should be doing.

AFAIK, it'll affect your starting base in a saved game, but not soldier names etc.

Check the OP for a link to the UFOpedia. Be warned, it contains tons of spoilers and tends to ruin the discovery aspect of the game. Don't be afraid to utterly fail the first time you play because epic losses are half the fun of this game.

No, it really is. The fan mod made an excellent attempt to shape the shit into something else, but there's only so much one can do. A shit shaped Castle is still shit no mater what it looks like.

The made a decent copy of the tactical missions, through in a lot of bugs and then decided to shit all over the Geoscape game play for some reason. Hope you like one base (and the way it is too, cause if you delete anything it crashes) because you can't build anything in other bases other than radar and missile defenses. Brilliant.

Usually you and I see eye to eye Veritas, but in this case I think you're fucking crazy. It's a completely shit game and if it weren't for the warm memories of Xcom than it conjures it up it would have no redeeming quality whatsoever.

Just don't spend money on it. Especially not $18.

Eh, I don't really remember our conversations on stuff, but there's at least one person in this thread who also thinks I'm fucking crazy so it's not a huge leap. I played through some of the game with the mod, but I couldn't finish it due to the dullness. The UFO series I also couldn't finish either, but I think UFO:ET is better and closer to the original. That's not saying much though.

I guess it's actually pretty bad even if you're not comparing it to X-COM. The fan mod at least makes it playable. Probably wouldn't spend more than $5 on it. Then again, you can probably pick up Silent Storm for that price.

As a note: The game is pretty clearly called UFO: Extraterrestrials: Gold.

    Like, that's it's name.

    Not X-Com 4.

The game is plenty fun, but it's different. Well no shit, it's not X-Com 4, it's UFO: Extraterrestrials: Gold. It is good times, and the new Geoscape allows for some pretty interesting things. IE: Heavily shielded craft with short range weapons providing a screen for more lightly shielded, but more heavily armed craft to take down a big ship.

While I don't like some of the changes (specifically in accuracy), overall, the game is fun. Just don't expect it to be X-Com 4.

    Because it's not.

Well the original game was called UFO: Enemy Unknown, not X-Com. X-Com was just the title they gave it in the US because it sounded cooler. So it is pretty much passing itself off as UFO: The Next Game.

Also I mean it's turn-based military action against alien invaders with a Geoscape where you research things and shoot down UFOs and a Battlescape where you kill and loot aliens. It's the same fundemental game, just with some other stuff layered onto it which is apparently not very fun.

I've got no problem with them making it different, but it's gotta be fun, and evidently this game is not fun. It just feels like a cooler next-gen X-Com and then turns into bullshit.

I dunno the thing really is that it doesn't feel like its its own game, it just this weird third-party cocktease that got folks riled up for a sweet new X-Com title and then delivered whatever the hell the company apparently thought would make a new game. I guess it would be one thing if it was unique enough to be considered its own thing, but it's very clearly trying to be associated with X-Com and they don't feel even remotely close beyond the concept.

It was like a trojan horse of bargain bin mediocrity that a lot of folks fell for and are bitter about. We got tricked and it sucked and what the fuck are we going to do with this damn game.

I deleted the save and started a new one, just after installing the utility.

It gave me the modified (non-retarded) base setup, which was neat, but pretty much ignored everything else, except the upgraded weapons. Oh, and my Skyranger now has a weapon port, which is... weird. (I am not using it)

But the stat-strings and equipment remembering thing do not work, and that was the main reason I installed it. I forget what my netbook runs, but I doubt a netbook is going to be running a 64x whatever it is. I think it's just XP.

The Terror from the Deep final boss is kind of the same way, he's just a big block that you shoot and win the game. I'd always kind of wondered what they could've done for bosses in a game like this. Aside from just making the eyeball a giant flying armored hitler-head tank, I dunno. Maybe four or five psychically inter-linked guys you would have to kill in the same turn or they ressurect each other, or like something that was invincible unless you could drop its shield with a plasma.

Some kind of incentive not to blaster bomb the fuck out of the final room would've been cool. Not that it was a big deal or anything, but bosses could be pretty sweet in a game like this.

That's assuming X-Com is the best game ever made and is perfect in every way shape and form, and any deviation from that super-perfect-best formula makes the game shitty. Which is untrue. UFO:ET Gold takes some steps forward (Geoscape combat, more tech levels) and some backwards (Soldiers become horribly inaccurate if so much as grazed).

The bases aren't so much bases as radar relays. Okay. So what? The crashing when trying to sell base facilities IS an issue, however, and I do hope that gets patched.

Turns out my D-Fend was super old, version 3! And it didn't have auto cycles. I tried the new D-Fend Reloaded, and it seems that the game time still goes by too fast and you can see the minutes come down quickly but the loading for the rest of the game is super smooth.

What sucks is that I have to redo all of my D-Fend profiles into the new one. I also loved the old interface a lot more, so I'll probably continue using the old D-Fend and maybe boot up the new for X-Com.

    Thanks!

    My Problems:
    - The limitation on the bases is probably the main thing for me. It just seems to arbitrary. I can understand limiting the player so that they can only house soldiers from one base, but limiting production and research as well? Do you honestly believe that was a good decision?

    - I don't like the simplification of the bases - no juggling living quarters, general stores, research and manufacturer space. It wasn't excessively complex to begin with, I don't understand why it needed to be dumbed down.

    - Why can't my soldiers die? They've been shot, blown up, stabbed, insulted and they still won't die.

Honestly, if they fixed the sell crash bug and it was possible to mod the bases so I could at least build manufacturing facilities on other bases, I wouldnt be nearly so bitter.
