Wow... that took a hell of a lot longer than I thought it was going to. Anyway, here are some FileFactory links for some video-game-ish stuff that I wrote in the last couple of months or so:

    Mass Effect inspired technoThing
Based around a drumbeat I built in Ableton
    epic padsynth techno

I can (sort of) recommend Fruity Loops for music production for those starting out, but the rigid clip-based structure will give you baaad habits. If you want to start in the deep end, go with Reason or Ableton.

Obviously, Sibelius is pretty much gonna be your best choice for acoustic writing if you're uncomfortable using a piano/have horrible horrible manuscript penmanship like me.

I would also be happy to answer theory questions (I've been doing that all day anyway, first day back at uni and now I'm tutoring first year composition majors. :P)

So guys, I'm looking for songs I can use to practice tabbing by ear. I've been doing a fair bit of game music lately, since midi/bit music are generally fairly distinctive and simple. Any suggestions?

Ah, I didn't mean I was specifically looking for game music, but that's good too.

    Oh!

Well, are you looking to tab mostly chords or melody or both?

Both, but I guess melody would be simpler to start with.

Said the People by Dinosaur Jr. should be pretty fun, i would think.

Though, it might actually be more difficult than I first through now that I'm re listening to it.

Since it seems several PA members have written their own material on music theory, I took the step of setting up a wiki. This is probably overkill, but hopefully someone will find some use for it.

EDIT: Not much content yet, but I'll make some updates periodically. Feel free to make your own.

So we recorded the song that I fucked around with a more interesting bassline after critique here

Yeah I actually quite dig the bassline on that.

Here's a something I recorded today. I downloaded a drum loop from looper man and just started building around that. My bends are a bit off in some parts and my timing leaves a lot to be desired but I'm reasonably happy with how it came out.

I do like the bass line but I think it could use a little bit more movement- there are times when the song feels a little bit empty because the bass seems to merely do the same thing the guitar does. This works just fine when the guitar has dropped out, but when the guitar is playing with you i think you could do a little bit more to fill out the sound.

And, are there any crafty music people here? I'm trying to figure out what the tuning is to this song-

    http://murderbydeath.bandcamp.com/track/shiola

I've got a close facsimile (dropped the low E string to B and then i put the capo on the second fret in such a way that it does not cover the low E (B) string) but it makes it impossible to get the G that's played.

Any thoughts or ideas are more than welcome

I saw that there was a request for where to find more of my music earlier. Sorry for the late reply. You can find much of my music here

    Anything titled rad_bear is music.
Thanks for the interest! New stuff coming out about once ever week or so.

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/murder_by_death/shiola_tab.htm

It's got the tuning in there too. No idea how accurate it is though.

EDIT: Does this count as being crafty?

It would... but that tab isn't close to accurate: After i threw my hands up in defeat earlier i searched for tabs/chords of this song but i turned up nothing that was close.

This video shows how he plays it live and it is clearly in some kind of alternate tuning

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHxp6Y5miOY

So... thanks for the effort, but sadly the guy who made the tab didn't put in his :/

Anyone know of a good program that will let me use a midi controller and just fark around? I bought an Oxygen 49 while work was putting a Mac on my desk, and it worked great with Garage Band, but I can't find a similar program for a real computer. All I want to do is hear noise when I push a key... preferably a cool noise that I can change, but at this point, I'm not picky.
I obtained a demo of a couple virtual instrument packages, but they all seemed to be plugins for other software, none of which does what I'm trying to do here.

You want standalone instruments or plugin instruments. Standalone instruments are more rare, as they require significantly more coding investment to handle the inputs & outputs. Plugins simply provide the sound programming and a few hooks to tie into the host program's i/o. You should probably look for a host program that will take your MIDI from your oxy49 and pipe that into a plugin.

There's lots out there. Do a search for "Free VST host" and you'll see there's 4-5 popular ones to choose from.

Thanks! That made a huge difference.. after I posted, I found some studio thing that let me use the ms wavetable synth, and the latency was horrid. VSThost is doing exactly what I wanted.

    Oh hey! A music thread.

I am a drummer. I play in a band. Would you like to hear/see some video?

This video is from a gig we did where we attempted to blend each song together with little to no breaks. It was pretty fun, but it didn't really give the audience any time to respond.

Yes I know the video is dark and yes it sucks my camera ran out of space in the 3rd video.

    Thoughts?

Man I've been neglecting this thread.

I gave composing a shot today. I came up with this tune, I sort of imagined it being the theme for a private detective:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?jkumekwt1qo

The drums suck, because I have no idea how to arrange them.
