I didn't like Truman Show when it came out. This is because the marketing portrayed it as another wacky Jim Carrey comedy, and my expectations were badly eschewed.

I like it a lot now.

What I'm saying is that the video for that song appeals to me on an entirely two-dimensional level.

Uh, didn't she just put out some song that people kept posting to chat and was in SiG's sig?

I thought that entire fad was ironic

Talking about something ironically is still talking about it I guess? *shrugs* I dunno if it was ironic or not.

The difference is that no one buys the CD when the fad is ironic. It's not advertising.

Mmm...oh god I am relating this to Bhabha's post-colonialist text on mimicry where mimicry becomes menace through the slippage of the mimicry and the reversed gaze of the other and I don't entirely get the theory yet but is this kind of what you are driving at. Purposefully undermining pop by mimicking pop so much it falls apart?

(much like modern art, which I mostly hate, as well)

generally this is a good indication that someone is wrong

How so? Unless I'm using the wrong term for things like a wall of nails being called "art."

Not all modern art is pointless. The term applies to a general thesis, not a specific technique.

Well, I'm just sure what term to apply to it, then.

Lady Gaga's dresses are self-characterized as "art," correct? If so, then I have disliked every bit of "art" I have ever seen her wear.

I still think there are parts of the modern art movement that is basically pointless.

There are parts of every art movement that are pointless. The only reason you don't see much of the Renaissance trash is because over the last 500-600 years it's been lost/destroyed 'cause it was trash. There are examples of good modern art as well.

That, and I'd describe Lady Gaga as pop art, not modern art.

Well, define "pointless." As in, "This piece does nothing to further the ****** movement" or "This piece is just stupid and badly done."

    Basically

whenever something super popular crops up that I find terrible, I assume people are liking it ironically.

Or maybe they like it ironically so much that they actually like, but in an ironic manner.

Or maybe they like irony so much that they like the terrible thing unironically.

I should sub-out gay and put in queer. Classic queer ideals challenge normal heteronormative standards. So frat boys singing really flashy, girly, poppy, bowie-esque songs does something for challenging the hetero-status-quo. I hate you for making me type sentences like that. My realm is science. 8-)

I get what you are saying. In the handful of songs of her's I haven't really heard her challenge heternormative ideals, but then again I've listened to a very small sample of her music. Most of it seemed very standard "get rich, get famous, conspicuous consumption, fuck boys"

I don't know, I don't see that at all. A much more common theme seems to be: "Get captured, go through some kind of rebirth, pretend to accept new life, murder people"

Paparazzi, Bad Romance, and Telephone all follow that arc.

Ok. I just tend to be kinda jaded towards some more recent "art" pieces, like the wall of nails thing, or that one piece where a guy starved a dog to death and called it "art."

That kind of thing? Pretty sure it's pointless.

    Sorry.

Ah! Yes I can certainly see the possibility or reducto ad absurdum in her work. I guess it can just be hard to tell when something is actually just embodying something or is parodying it, especially if you don't pay close attention. Lady gaga doesn't agree with me aurally (nor is pop something I need to see reduced into an absurd, as it is already an absurd for me), however, so no close listenings for me.
