Windows 7 game slowdown and choppy audio issues.

SabanSaban Registered User regular
So after a system restart the other day, i have run into a problem with games, and system performance in general. It first popped up while playing Vanguard. My FPS would drop down to 1, and my audio would start to sound like i was downloading into the Matrix, in some places making the game unplayable. So the first thing i did was do a complete driver wipe and upgrade to the latest nvidia Windows 7 drivers, and this helped a little bit, but the problem is still there.

I thought it was only affecting Vanguard because TF2 still ran fine. But today i started up WoW and i had the exact same problem, only worse. framerate takes a dive pretty much anywhere, audio gets all choppy and garbled. I thought maybe a virus, but AVG hasnt found anything. I looked at the list of latest Windows updates and also didnt find anything that might obviously be to blame. Googling has found nothing but generic FPS drops on all sorts of systems.

Just did a system restore to before this started happening and it still persists.

WoW and Vanguard both slow down, almost like its running in slow-mo, and my sound starts getting real choppy and slows down as well.

I'm starting to think maybe its a RAM issue? Maybe HDD issue? What happens is when i go into a new area and stuff starts to load, is when i get the biggest FPS drops. Gonna try a disk defrag but i dont think thats it.

Memory Diagnostic came up with nadda. Is there any sort of way to test for errors in a videocards memory or processor?

If it's a Dell, you can run the internal system diagnostics on bootup.

I had a really similar problem. I bought a new hard drive, reinstalled windows 7 on it, and now everything works great. My old hard drive still works and benchmark tests tell me the read/write speeds are where they should be, but for some reason it's wonky enough that the OS didn't like running on it. It was only 2-ish years old but was the only hard drive in my only computer and was very heavily used, so I guess it just isn't what it used to be.

You could also go to the seagate website, download there seatools diagnositc software, then burn the file to a cd or dvd and boot from that. That will tell you the current status of your harddrive, and give you an idea of how it is running.

What you could also try and do is take RAM chips one by one and see if any of them are giving you a problem.

If your computer supports it you should try and get something like Rivatuner that can look at temperatures at different points on your system, it could tell you if something is over heating and causing a problem

Seatools didnt find anything, i downloaded something from 3dguru to check temperatures and nothing was overheating.

Its weird because this never used to happen at all until i restarted recently, so im kind of at loss as to what it could be.

I'm starting to think my videocard has just plain shit the bed. In World of Warcraft, i get 10fps constantly anytime im looking around in an open area, even after everything has loaded which leads me to believe its not a ram or HDD issue. Vanguard is the same way, everything loads but my framerate still goes into slow-mo.

Temps are fine, everything is within reason.

But now vanguard wont start at all, i hit launch game and it basically locks up my entire PC, i can still move my mouse but nothing responds, cant ctrl alt esc to bring up task manager or anything. WoW still starts and plays, so now im not sure whats wrong.

I've had similar problems to this. After about a day or so of having the computer running I'll begin to see issues with audio. I've not yet had any problems with games but I found that Google Chrome would begin to use a lot of CPU. Whenever I loaded a page the CPU usage would spike and if I was listening to any music it would begin to sound distorted, slow, or scrambled.

I also noticed that rundll32.exe would sometimes be running with it stuck at 50% CPU usage. Restarting the computer would fix everything but it eventually returns again. I have no idea what the problem is but I never had this happen in XP.

I have similar issues. No audio problems but when I play any game everything starts off fine but I gradually start to drop frames and slowly the game (CoD4 for instance) degrades to such a choppy state it's seizure inducing. This is the odd part - I installed Windows 7 and it was fine, then one day when I booted up my pc this issue started occurring.
Now I only had 2gb of RAM when I first installed Windows 7 so it would reset every now and then when I booted up (by reset I mean my screen resolution would have changed, my background reset to the default and all my desktop icons squeezed into the top left corner, I assume because of the low RAM). The games would run fine when this happened! On the times it would boot up and my desktop looked the way I made it after installing Windows 7 the games would get this choppy frame rate.
I have 6gb of RAM as of today and Windows 7 doesn't go 'default' anymore. Which is a shame really as that was the only time I got to play my games D:.

This hints at a software problem to me, but I'm no expert. On a side note I have 2x nvidia 8600 GTs which is the only thing me and Saban have in common.

I've re-installed Windows 7 and now have no problems. I have not installed any drivers whatsoever so maybe it's the latest nvidia drivers? I have a soundblaster audigy which i just loaded the drivers for and still everything is ok.

I know this is an old thread but I am experiencing the same problem. Everything was fine till last weekend. Suddenly, audio is scratchy and frame rates are terrible in all games.

    I have a GTX260 factory overclocked to GPU-680MHz Memory-1250MHz Shader-1500MHz

The card is supposed to have near GTX 285 performance, now it is running like an old 8600 or something.

The audio is also scratchy. Not only with games but when loging in to my profile in Windows7, the login sound is scratchy.

I did notice with COD4 a couple of weeks back that frames would intermittently grind to 1FPS from a consistent ~60FPS. Then it would recover and repeat. Eventually the game used to crash. I never had the problem with Crysis Warhead though. Now Crysis Warhead is also struggling, actually all games are strugling.

Is there a way to fix this without having to do a reinstall?

I have tried unisntalling the driver and reinstalling it, I have done the same with the audio driver, but still the same problem.

What did you change on your computer last weekend? Can you replace the "factory overclocked" video card with a stock video card?

This sounds a lot like a hardware issue.

That said, check the windows 7 performance diagnostic util event log for clues on what is sucking up all those system resources. It might be something easy to spot from the event logs alone, though tbh I think the problem is pretty low level and event logs may not be much help initially.

My first step would be to shutdown and disconnect everything not absolutely essential to getting a game to run. I.e. all usb devices and hubs, any unneeded optical media drives, floppies and hard drives, etc. Only you know whats plugged in but in frustrating circumstances like this its easy to overlook something, so once you think you've unplugged or disabled (via bios or device manager at a push) everything, look down device manager again (make sure 'show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu), and make sure you've not missed anything.

That done try rebooting and retrying a problem game. If the problem is fixed, reconnect one device at a time, reboot and retry a game to see if you can isolate the problem hardware.

If the problem persists check windows 7s performance diagnostics event log again for clues

Holy crap! I've been scouring the internets for someone with similar issues for weeks now!

I'm having the same exact problem. I've run memtest, prime95, occt, fur mark. All stable and fine.

I've even replaced my mobo (I have 2 boxes with the same board), and the PSU (with two diff PSUs, another 850W and a 1250W). I've changed RAM from 1066 to 800 chips (both G. Skill), I've also completely gutted and rebuilt my main box twice (cleaning all fans, etc).

This always happens after gaming for awhile (League of Legends lately), and eventually the audio will start to get choppy, garbled and then hiss like crazy at times. Frame rates get choppy and weird etc.

Even while this is happening all of the temps on every device are completely normal, and actually quite low.

My major catch is I run two gfx cards for my work setup (3 displays), and I haven't 100% reproduced the problem with only one gfx card yet.

I have noticed CPU usage tends to be through the roof when this happens (50-60%), but League of legends tends to run abnormally high on CPU usage anyhow.

    Edit:
Also, when I reboot, the problem vanished as soon as I reboot, and the cycle repeats. Can game for quite awhile, and then the audio goes nuts and FPS will start to drop out.

    Main setup:
QX9650 Intel Core2 Extreme Quad Core
    Asus Maximus FOrmula
    8Gb RAM G. Skill DDR2 800
Use a Logitech G35 USB headset when gaming
285 GTX 1gb RAM (main display)
9800 GTX 1GB (for work displays)
2 Raptors in Raid 0 for main drives

I was having bad performance in games as well, but most of mine were whenever the game had to access the HDD.

Turns out that Windows 7 was putting my HDD to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, so when I had to load a new area or save a file or whatever there was a massive freeze and performance drop as the drive was woken back up and accessed

fixed it by going into the advance power settings and setting the hdd to never sleep

I forget what it's called on Intel chips (Speedstep?) but there is a bios option for AMD processors called "Cool N Quiet", disable that. Sometimes it can play havoc with games, it's a power saving method that changes the processor speed on the fly.

Chances are it might be that.

Also, on another note you might want to check that your hard drive(s) and cd/dvd drive are not using PIO (if they're IDE) and instead using DMA.
