Man, MS has taken this awesome concept, and the more details I hear, the less excited I get. No multi-tasking I can understand, since there is multi-tasking, just not the Android/WinMo 6.5 way. No copy-paste when it was probably the #1 complaint we heard about he iPhone for years was just STUPID. I don't care about "smart" functions for highlighted text, because in the real world, you want text that won't be recognized by a "smart" function and then you won't be able to do what you wanted with it. And no external storage? Haven't we learned by now that memory is never going to be large enough?
Holy shit people, do you post without reading the thread? For the last 3 days I've seen the phone 7 in action. There is copy and paste, the function works. All it does is roll it into one action instead of several.
Edit: I'll flesh it ot but I'm typig on an iPod touch so it's annoying. In windows phone 7 you highligt text like you would on anything else, have a starting point and drag to the end, bam highlighted. You then selectto share and get a menu with any installed program that can accept the text, so your video player won't show up because it can't do anything with it. The program opens and you dpaste your text in. Done. It's a more elegant solutions with less overall actions than similar devices.

Well thank you for explaining it out, because everything I've read so far has been something along the lines of: if there's a phone number on a web page you can tap it to call it or add to contacts. But it doesn't say that I could highlight it and send it in the message of an e-mail or do something else with it.
I don't really see the need for a removable storage card. I have the 16GB ZuneHD and filled it with music, podcasts and videos and still have room left over. I would imagine that by the time these phones come out 16GB will be the smaller of the models. Buying a removable card that size would be too expensive to justify. It would be cheaper to buy the model with the bigger SSD.
I think that article makes too big a deal about not being able to multitask on a phone. It's a phone, after all, it's not meant to be a workstation. Other than playing music, I can't think of anything you'd want to multitask on a phone.

Truly? Do you currently own a smartphone?
This complete guide with what I assume (I haven't read the entire thing) is all current WinMo7 information, including their plan (basically "save states" for programs) for how to handle multitasking. Whether that'll work or even exactly how it'll work when the phones actually arrive is uncertain, but it doesn't seem as bad as "No multitasking period."
I'm constantly shifting between apps on my phone and Android is nice enough to not waste power and time trying to reload them.
Actually MS does "copy" what Apple makes popular - there's a historical trend.
Can you cite any examples of this? Because usually it's Apple that's copying something else and pretending it's original.
I must emphasize that I use "copy" in quotes for a reason, because it doesn't mean a blatant rip, nor is it a necessarily a bad thing to copy a successful formula - one does not re-invent the wheel when the wheel suffices.
And while I say Apple makes something popular, I don't mean to say that it's more innovative than MS. Apple has excellent marketing, and many of the products they create are popular even if they're not very innovative (or invented by Apple).
Similarly not every MS innovation makes it to the popular market (Surface, for example, and we may never see Courier in mass production... and not mention that Zune was released mainly in the US only).
Historically, Apple popularised the use of GUI from Xerox, and MS adopted many of the GUI design from Apple for their own Windows 3.0. That doesn't discount the fact that Apple made the GUI popular, and MS leveraged on the market acceptance and drove it further. Nor does it mean that MS is somehow weaker for it. For from it.

That sounds awesome, actually. Where is that mentioned, though?

Hey guys, I'm at the tail end of mix10 right now and had seen the phone os in action. There is copy and paste, that description above is accurate but not detailed enough. You highligt any text or URL, and bring up a sub menu to bring that string in to, so if it's info on a webpage, any app that can accept it like office or something 3rd party will be in that list, and you can paste it and launch the app with one action.
He was at the conference/show/gathering where the phones were being shown off. And used them.
Paul Thurrott talks a bit about this big damn misconception about Copy & Paste among other things. I'm already seeing Apple & Anti-MS trolls pasting this FUD every where. At least they're not lying about the lack of Flash anymore, through the streaming Netflix seems to have put them in their place.
Another thing that I thought was cool was the apps are aware of eachother. Example, you load up the Netflix app and watch a bit of a movie. Later, you're in the Zune app, and the Netflix movie shows up, after all, it's all media and that's what the Zune app is there for, to aggregate it all. So you can continue to watch the Netflix movie through the Zune menu.
Likewise, you open up the built-in photo viewer, and if you decide you want to edit it, within that app you can launch one of your other installed apps that have the capability to edit photos, you may have a few of them, and pick the one you currently want to use.
The idea is you don't have to open and close all these separate apps to do things, like on the iPhone where everything is walled off from everything else. Here they all link together and are aware of other things installed and the capability, making it easier to use I think and reducing the number of interactions for anything you'd want to do.

I'm sorry, but did you just basically say Zune will incorporate Netflix? Does that mean Zune will have TV/Movie based subcription service, in a way?
It's not incorporating it, but it recognizes that you started watching a video in another app and allows you to continue it if your browsing through the Zune hub. I have no idea if Zune will have TV/Movie subscription, but Win Phone 7 will have the Netflix app, and that app can stream over the network TV and Movies, so it sort of does what you want. I don't know if you can browse the Netflix marketplace through Zune, as all I saw was it recognizing you watched something, and allowing you to continue or view history.

I think I get what you're saying. Which means DAMN. But it's not like it matters because Netflix will be on the freaking phone anyways.
I think that Joe Belifore also said that Netflix stuff should be accessible through the Zune PC software and that other media services can leverage it as well.

But, I might not recall correctly.
I haven't tried/noticed Netflix through the PC Zune software. But it does have native support for Windows Media Center in Win7.
So what I'm curious about is pricing. I am having major smart phone envy at the moment such that I'm starting to not even care about my usual Apple fandom and willing to jump brands, but the usual $70/month is just like...
You'd think competition would drive this baseline down just a little.

70/mo data/service or for the phone itself? I'm assuming the former. I'm waiting, even forgoing getting a Nexus One/Droid because of this. I have a Zune HD and would love to jump ship to a Zune HD/WM7 combo. I realize the battery life would be compromised, but I have a charger for my car and usb connector for any PC I come in contact with.
Just release it already....even though I know that phones don't start shipping until this fall.
Service of course. Couple hundred for a phone is no big deal, but I already feel that the standard $40/month for voice is more than high enough. Hell, that's what I pay for 8Mb internet. Tacking on $30/month for data is salt in the wound. With most providers, that's the absolute minimum.
Think the average service contract I'd get is 110/mo for a smartphone. Would be nice if a plan was offered that had less talk time, that's the thing I least use a phone for.
edit: my employer does not offer any phone discounts, though... for most people it's probably a fair shake cheaper

Ha, that's precisely the same for me. And it sucks because everyone I know has ATT so that whole ATT to ATT not using up minutes kind of adds more insult to injury.
"We know you don't use your minutes, but here's MORE good news! You don't use more minutes when you talk to ATT customers. Oh, you only have people on ATT? HA!"
My phone conversations are 5 minutes tops and if not, I use texts. So wtf.

But then again, I'm having trouble comprehending how stupid an executive has to be to pooh-pooh cut and paste.

I hope we get to see the phones worldwide.

But yeah, that's a great implementation; it's just like the "Share with..." menu in Android, but for copy-paste. Sweet.
