The Montauk Project

montauk-1.jpg

On the 30th of June, 1908, an anomalous event occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia. Approximately two thousand square kilometers of woodland were completely obliterated by the event. No definitive explanation has ever been released to the public.

On the 27th of October, 1943, the U.S. Navy conducted an experiment into radar invisibility at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvania. Officially, this experiment never happened.

Unofficially, it was all too successful.

Based upon an untested unified field theory, the experiment was designed to harness both electromagnetism and gravity in order to make a single ship completely undetectable to enemy radar. Judged by this metric, the experiment was a monumental failure.

When the final switch was thrown, the test ship - the USS Eldridge - became enveloped in a green fog, before disappearing from sight completely. The Philadelphia Experiment, as it would come to be known by conspiracy theorists, had not managed to make a ship invisible to radar... it had managed to make a ship invisible.

The Eldridge quickly returned to visibility, however, and the crew on board had suffered a terrible fate. More than half had been turned inside out, their organs spilling onto the floor as their muscles twitched in futile protest; their moist screams echoing throughout the returned ship. Some poor souls had been fused to the very bulkheads of the ship, the metal painfully forcing its way through their bones.

The rest of the crew had been driven hopelessly insane, their mouths frothing as they thrashed against the floor. Only two crew members remained rational enough to give an account of their experience during the Eldridge's period of invisibility. One stared his would-be saviour in the eyes, and said - quite calmly - "Stop them". Less than a heart beat after that, he had grabbed a revolver and placed a round through his temple.

The sole surviving crew member was placed in quarantine.

The first time a guard came to check upon him, it was discovered that he had disappeared.

On the 27th of October, 1943, the U.S. Navy did not conduct any experiments into radar invisibility.

The physicists and psychologists stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard were assigned to a new posting, at Montauk Air Force Station on Long Island.

Their mission objective was classified beyond the highest levels of US Government.

History has yet to accurately record their findings.
What's this?

This is a phalla for 25 people and 5 reserves, also known as a mini-phalla.

Phalla? What's that?

The forum's version of the party game, Mafia. See here for more details. General rules apply, including no anonymous contact between players, no direct quoting of role PMs, etc. If you set up an off-site proboard, please PM me the link to it.

Every day you must vote for a player to be removed from the experiment. Please !vote in red and !retract in lime. Retractions are not necessary; only your last vote will be counted.

You're a terrible host, Burnage. What's the inevitable fucked-up mechanic?

Although participants should not expect to be made aware of all details of the experiment prior to the beginning of testing, we are able to inform you of one novel concept.

Each player will have a synchronisation level. The average at the start of the game will be 50%. The higher your synchronisation is, the more information you will receive; keep it above 40% and you'll be informed about whether your actions each night are successful, keep it above 70% to be informed about all actions made against you. If your synchronisation level rises above 90%, then you may develop new abilities.

Be warned: both extremely high and extremely low synchronisation levels may be detrimental to your continued participation in the experiment.

Synchronisation levels will be raised naturally as the experiment progresses and activity levels are sustained; they will drop rapidly in cases of inactivity. They may also be artificially altered by some means. It should be noted that natural rises in synchronisation will never endanger the participant.

The following should be considered examples of standard individuals within the Montauk Project.
You are in control of FIRST NAME LAST NAME, test subject, and a member of Liberation.

Your synchronisation level is: 50%
Your Shadow is: NAME

You've spent your entire life locked inside the Montauk station. Your earliest memories are of psychometric testing, electrodes being drilled into your skull, and... things. Your attendants tell you that they're just nightmares, but you can't shake the feeling that those things are somehow real. And more importantly, somehow coming to get you.

Thankfully for your sanity, the tinkerings of the scientists have given you some abilities which - so you understand - are not quite ... normal. You're perfectly able to defend yourself, no matter the form of the assailant.

The atmosphere down here has grown strange over the past few days. Changes are coming, and now's your chance to finally escape. If you play this right, maybe you'll be able to see sunshine for the first time in your life; and maybe you'll be able to finally stop the nightmares...

You have the following ability:
ABILITY: ABILITY DESCRIPTION

You have the Liberation Win Condition.
Your primary objective is to destroy the members of Project R, and any other deeply malicious subjects of the Montauk Project.
Your secondary objective is for the members of Liberation to outnumber the members of Deontology.
You are in control of FIRST NAME LAST NAME, test subject and member of Deontology.

Your synchronisation level is: 50%
Your Shadow is: NAME

Days will end at 0000 GMT. Certain days (i.e., when I decide to go out and get drunk) will most likely have a later vote close, which I will give you advance warning of. Also, if it's necessary (in other words, a few players ask me to) I could make the default vote close an hour or so later than 0000 GMT.

Clarifications:

Ask them in Orange.

Recorded Data
Day 1.a: Insertion
Day 1.b: Awakening
Day 1.c: Suspicion
Day 2.a: Aftermath
Day 3.a: Resonance
Day 4.a: Lost Memories

Should you wish to join the experiment, please give your consent below. Participants should be made aware that several ethical violations are an integral part of the experimental design, and as such the approval of Miskatonic University's ethics committee has not been sought.

After you have signed up, please PM me the name of another player.

    The Montauk Project: Timeline B

On the 30th of June, 1908, an anomalous event occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia. Approximately two thousand square kilometers of woodland were completely obliterated by the event; millions of Russian citizens were recorded as suffering from some form of poisoning in its aftermath. After Tsar Nicholas II requested scientific and medical aid from the nascent global community, researchers flooded into the affected area. No definitive explanation has ever been released to the public.

On the 27th of October, 1943, the US and USSR Navy conducted a joint experiment into radar invisibility at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvania.

On the 27th of October, 1943, neither the US or USSR Navy conducted any experiments into radar invisibility.

The physicists and psychologists stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard were assigned to a new posting, at Montauk Air Force Station on Long Island.

The Project was an open secret, and invitations to assist in studies were frequently extended to exemplary academics.

Although the Project's work has almost certainly benefited mankind, history has yet to accurately record its findings.

    What's this?

This is the second timeline in The Montauk Project mini-phalla.

    The what?

Each player is in control of two roles - one in timeline A, and one in timeline B. What that means for you will be detailed in private PMs. More broadly, a player must see both their timeline A and B roles killed before they are removed from the game completely.

The vote is unchanged - if somebody wins the vote, they are removed from the game. No exceptions.

You're a terrible host, Burnage. This is a terrible mechanic.

    I know.

The following should be considered examples of standard individuals within timeline B of the Montauk Project.
You are in control of FIRST NAME LAST NAME, test subject, and a member of Liberation.

    Your synchronisation level is: 50%
    Your Shadow is: NAME

You were recruited at a young age into the Montauk Project, and your life here has been a happy one. The experiments have produced vast amounts of beneficial data, and you yourself have enjoyed having your mental abilities expanded.

Now, you think that the Project should go even more public than it already is - you just need to protect it from the hostile forces currently at work.

    You have the following ability:
    ABILITY: ABILITY DESCRIPTION

You have the Timeline B Liberation Win Condition.
Your primary objective is to destroy the Karnstein Mercenaries, and any other deeply malicious subjects of the Montauk Project.
Your secondary objective is for the members of Liberation to outnumber the members of Deontology.
Your third objective is to achieve victory in at least one timeline.
You are in control of FIRST NAME LAST NAME, test subject and member of Deontology.

    Your synchronisation level is: 50%
    Your Shadow is: NAME

You were recruited at a young age into the Montauk Project, and your life here has been a happy one. The experiments have produced vast amounts of beneficial data, and you yourself have enjoyed having your mental abilities expanded.

Given the number of attacks that the Project is currently under, you think it would be sensible for a veil of secrecy to be created. Should the Project survive the coming days, maybe such classification will become standard.

    But the Project must survive.

    You have the following ability:
    ABILITY: ABILITY DESCRIPTION

You have the Timeline B Deontology Win Condition.
Your primary objective is to destroy the Karnstein Mercenaries, and any other deeply malicious subjects of the Montauk Project.
Your secondary objective is for the members of Timeline B's Deontology to outnumber the members of Timeline B's Liberation.
Your third objective is to achieve victory in at least one timeline.
