WELCOME TO THE JAPANIMATION THREAD!

Rosario+Vampire is one of the best shows you've possibly not watched due to prejudices and you are a worse off person because of it.

"But Beel", you say, "monster girls?"

rosariovampirec.jpg

Trust me.

"I heard it is full of fanservice."

Yes, it is. But...

yukarikurumut.jpg
(Ok the manga is superior and you should read it but hear me out here!)

ANIME:

If you can't put up with 9 episodes before things start getting awesome, I don't know what to tell you. If you have a particular understanding of the monster girl genre, you may even find those first 8 episodes amusing. (Probably not.)

"All right, all right, I give up already. Tell me about the series (again)."

Franchise, really. But anyway...

R+V is the story of one average guy named Tsukune who ends up at a monster school because he couldn't get into any other school and his parents accidentally sent him there. Unfortunately for him, he's the only human at Yokai Gakuen and they're out for blood.

That's good, because Tsukune's first encounter is her:

539px1akashiyamoka.png

"Is that...?"

Yes, dear reader. Our darling Moka-san is indeed a vampire. And she has a naughty side once the rosario on her chest is removed.
3440431261261206800full.jpg
She also kicks high.

It's Love At First Bite. They fall hard for each other, and Tsukune makes up his mind to stay at Yokai Gakuen while keeping his identity hidden. It's a match made in Heaven...

...or in Hell, because there's a harem of other monsters after his bodily fluids.

tsukuneandkurumu.png
KURUMU KURONO - Succubus
At first glance, she's another big boobed bimbo, but under that huge bosom is a heart of gold. Kurumu was originally jealous of Moka and tried to steal Tsukune away, but his courage convinced her to choose him as her "Mate of Fate". She now constantly tries to suffocate (poor) Tsukune with her funbags, and acts as an older sister for her friends.

mizore.png
MIZORE SHIRAYUKI - Yuki-Onna
She's a shy girl that just needs an icebreaker. Because she already stalked you down and froze you for safekeeping. Thinking Tsukune is another loner who would understand her, she stalks him and tries to keep it cool, but ends up only hurting others. After a misunderstanding, she could no longer control her ice powers and almost puts Tsukune and friends on ice, but his kindness managed to melt her heart and win her over. She continues to stalk Tsukune and throw ice darts at Kurumu if she gets too close to him.

2ac6e4533e7988c3c246667.png
YUKARI SENDO - Witch
A child genius who skipped grades. Unfortunately, that left her feeling like she doesn't belong, and the other monsters not liking witches because they resemble humans doesn't help either. With this ostracization, she responds the only way she could. Throwing childish tantrums and summoning giant water pans to smash their heads in. But behind that giggly childish laugh are her tears. Moka and Tsukune were the only ones to realize that, and their understanding made Yukari realize what she needs to do. She needs to get them together with her for a threesome.

87fd5a64f33bafabdd5d4e2.png
RUBY TOUJOU - Witch
An orphaned witch in the human world, she was taken in by a kind elderly witch and raised in a beautiful field of sunflowers. Sadly, she was orphaned when her parents were killed by humans in a car accident, and she resents them so much for that and for attempting to landscape her sunflowers away that she turned the sunflowers into a man-eating plant army. Only Tsukune's determination to save her could convince her to regain her sanity. Many many things have happened, and now she works for the School's chairman.

After gathering this tight-knit group of friends, Tsukune's identity becomes close to discovered by the school's corrupt police group, The Public Safety Commission. His friends stage an epic rescue where Tsukune is killed.

So that's Season 1.

In the manga, that's where the story REALLY starts to take off. But we'll get to that in a second.

Season 2 is just fanservice and filler fluff, but they do have curry zombies

rosario2curryzombies.jpg

and Moka's little sister, Kokoa Shuzen.

rosario2020vampire20cap.jpg
She is yandere as fuck.

MANGA:

The manga is much LESS fanservice-oriented, and focuses more on shounen-style action and has been compared favorably as similar to One Piece, MxO and Negima.

After being killed, Tsukune is revived by a bite from Moka, which infuses him with vampire blood.

Pros: He now can summon the demonic power to kick ass.
Cons: If it gets out of control, he becomes an out-of-control ghoul that seeks bloodshed and mayhem...FOREVER.

Fun times ahead for that guy, because things take a turn for the bad-ass and it keeps on truckin'.

He takes on the WHO'S WHO of anime/manga, from

Kyuubi nine-tailed foxes
rosariokyuubi.jpg

to Kira
rosariokeikaku.jpg

to Pikachu
rosariopika.jpg

to OH NOES PARASYTES
rosarioohnoesparasyte.jpg

And shinigamis and many more! This group wins with the power of friendship.

And superior firepower.

rosariofirepower.jpg
rosariofirepower3.jpg

It is awesome because of spectacular references
rosariovania.jpg
rosariophalla.jpg

That leave you looking like
rosarioanimeface.jpg

Plus, it really is a progressive comic with this latest plot point
blrosario.jpg
blrosario2.jpg

Personally, I love the manga for the moments of awesome
rosariophoenix.jpg

The moments of YAY
rosariowow.jpg

And the moments of heartwarming
rosariokiss.jpg
(Yes this is really heartwarming.)

Also, as a last benefit, the music for the series is, like everything else, awesome. All of the OPs and EDs and most of the insert songs are sung by the esteemed Mizuki Nana, Moka-san's seiyuu.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B6YmES2wkg

If you must, you can also discuss other awesome animation of an eastern variety here. Or manga, if you like. Or visual novels. Or even the soundtracks, OPs, and EDs. Not doujin games, though, as we have another thread for that. And not One Piece, either, as we also have a thread for that.

And now, a word from our malevolent overlords:
ElJeffe wrote:
Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

Also, Clawshrimpy? Yeah, stay out of here. You've lost your anime thread privileges.

Right, so on that note...

If you put what you've watched into your profile, you can then get a comparison between yourself and another poster and see how well your tastes match up!

On the other hand, you may find yourself looking for a broader perspective.

In that case, why not take a gander at...

The Penny-Arcade All-Star Anime Recommendations List:
(credit goes to Chen for original compilation)

Note that a thumbs up does not equal an incremental number for the quality of a given series or movie. It is merely the number of times people have recommended it. Also note that the main purpose of this list is to introduce anime viewers to lesser known titles, so please refrain from throwing a hissy fit if your favorite show doesn't get enough recognition, because odds are it's already well-known to the public.

Shinji Ikari, the resident Butt Monkey of the Eva series, discovers a case full of Warhammer 40000 miniatures and rulebooks at a very young age, with a profound affect on his personality, character, and relationship with his guardians. He takes a full 20 levels in badass as a result, becoming a Badass Bookworm Magnificent Bastard who knows no fear, charges headlong into combat without hesitation, exhibits nearly prescient planning abilities, and earns the respect reverence and adoration of his people for his heroism.

In the second chapter, he actually arrives in Tokyo-3 and meets his Evangelion. From there, things become only more Crazy Awesome.

Though the fic's title is simply Shinji and Warhammer 40K, there's numerous other influences at work. The overall framework of the story loosely follows Evangelion's established sequence of major events, although anything else that's strictly canon is pretty much kicked to the curb around the end of chapter nineteen. Shinji himself evolves into some amalgamation of Paul Atreides, Batman, Big Boss, Ciaphas Cain (HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!), Carrot Ironfoundersson, Kamina, Lelouch vi Britannia, Ender Wiggin, and unless he's careful, The God-Emperor of Mankind. The story oscillates between pitched battles that manage to top the fight scenes from Eva and domestic comedy worthy of Tenchi Muyo, the mood between the bleak despair resulting when you add Grim Dark to Evangelion and Hot Blooded defiance in the face of imminent defeat. Cast members are developed in interesting ways but not to the point of being warped beyond recognition, while the realities of Second Impact and the implications of such an event are explored to a greater extent than the source material. The author has managed to write an Eva 'fic that replaces the Wangst and navel contemplation with Beyond The Impossible, the Rule Of Cool, and chainswords, understanding and respecting the source material but doing something completely different with it. The result is something that both Eva and 40Ks fanbases can enjoy, while acting as a bridge between them and a gateway beyond. The author has also acknowledged TV Tropes as an aid to the fic. Be aware, though: Chekhov's Armoury is very much in effect, and continuity can be tricky to follow as a result.
Yes, and the 'competing' fic to Shinji and W40K is Thousand Shinji, which is at it sounds.

    Actual fanfic: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3946501/1/Thousand_Shinji

    And again, if you're afraid
Thousand Shinji is a Neon Genesis Evangelion/Warhammer 40000 fanfic that takes a different tack from the "competitor", Shinji And Warhammer 40 K. In this reality, Warhammer 40000 as a universe exists or at least did, before the Xanatos Roulette of the warp powers started. Shinji was found as a young boy and trained by Khnemu, displaced Sorcerer of the Thousand Sons Legion. When summoned by Gendo to Tokyo-3, Shinji begins his own machinations to repay Gendo for his "kindness", only to have things turn out not quite as planned.

Completed, with Mega Crossover sequel The Open Door currently on hiatus.

There's a sequel, entitled The Open Door, which is safely ignorable because it's fairly shit.

Hrm, we've got a page or so left. I could start linking Nanoha fic...

So what was your reason for considering the Open Door shit? I mean, don't get me wrong, I did too, but I was just wondering if our grounds for it coincided.
Other than 'it was a fanfic', I mean, before some smartass jumps on that easy opportunity.

On-topic, I watched Stand Alone Complex: Second Gig last week, and preferred it to the first series, despite the high concentration of weak episodes in the first third (among other things). Loved all the juicy politics, not to mention the greater scope and urgency of the plot.

How much of the manga is covered in the anime? Is there going to be more anime?

The Open Door was shit because:
    1) Focus on a supposedly relatively powerless OC rampaging through established realms
    2) That long, long, looooooong Forgotten Realms arc in general
    3) Eva technology and tactics of the ostensible protagonists being regarded as sooooo superior
    4) Desecration of Vita and Alicia's characters after the Nanoha crossover
    5) Protags fucking about with so many universes seemingly consequence free
    6) Lack of real focus/explanation for why they're doing this. Yeah, yeah, accumulating power...

I could find some more reasons, but I think those suffice for now.

I absolutely love Tenchi, but I still feel Rosario+Vampire (manga) is better.

Tenchi is still the top harem anime, since R+V subverts the genre and becomes something more.

It's ironic how there are moments where Ryoko spends half the episode completely nude (and darn proud of it), and yet the images I've seen of R+V appear much more obscene.

Ah, so we do agree. To be perfectly honest, I got so incensed about the sheer wasted potential that I actually started my own version, which could safely be described as a crossover of The Open Door and Murphy's Law, in an attempt to redress/explore all those points. As my first fanfic. Which is now at 150,000 words and still going.
