I had an awesome time at PAX East and I can't say thank you enough to the many people who waited in line either to see my little presentation or to say hi to me at my signing table afterward. Everyone was so nice...it really was great meeting so many of my readers. I might have to start leaving my fortress of solitude more often. Here's a pic I took from my vantage point...
Maybe he'll come to next year's PAX East and I can meet him there.
- Woke up around 9:00 with "More Than a Feeling" stuck in my head, the pillow-fort's integrity still intact, and 3 texts from people saying "Goddammit, snow!" I rushed to the window. It was very very light, didn't even stay on the ground, but it was snowing!
- Dragged duck to the hotel gym, after making a quick detour outside so I could feel some snowfall.
- Caught up with the group from the Marriott for breakfast. While there, Duck and I evaded disaster when a sinister coffee cup exploded all over the place where we had been sitting just moments before.
- Headed over to the Hynes, where we once again narrowly escaped injury, this time from Dr. Ziplock's fiendish death-trap!
- Upon reaching the Convention Center, we saw a very busy Robert Khoo, who stopped for a quick hello, handshake and bro-hug. Queued up into the entrance/key-note line around 12:30, if I'm remembering this right. So we were stuck there for 90 mins. but I had a lot of fun because it gave me a chance to talk to everyone. We soon discovered that FencingSax was at the very front of the line, so duck threatened him to make him save a row for us at the Keynote. I'll take the blame for that one. Duck was wearing his N7 hoodie and I just had to use the renegade interrupt there!
- When 2pm rolled around, we began our long march. NaC started high-5ing the line in the adjacent rows, and soon (not having read Friday's comic yet) I joined in, thereby acquiring a hand of pestilence.
- The Keynote was ok. Unfortunately, Wil Wheaton used a lot of the same material he used back in 2007 on the front and back end of his address. We had linked up with fencing (who did manage to save a lot of seats for us, but we moved a bit further back since we had a larger group) and were later joined by Otaku and Sheri. Oh, while we were waiting for the Keynote to start, CL's wife showed us pictures of their kids and we were all awwwwwwwwwwww!
- Also, futility was announced as an Omeganaut!
- We only stayed through half of the Q&A, by this point most of the others had already ventured out to see other parts of PAX. We took a quick look around the expo hall, then went to meet up with Pip (glee!) and his group. (PS. Everyone yell at Pip for not going out on Thursday night and sitting by himself in his room instead of meeting up with everyone. )
- It was now half-past Carbomb o'clock, so duck, pip, dave, lostwords, otaku, CorporateLogo, Sheri and I headed to The Pour House across the street. Unfortunately, The Pour House also had a policy of not serving shots ever so we had to make do with other drinks.
- Afterward, we headed out to Eagles Deli via subway for the much anticipated Super Burger Eating Competition between Otaku (USA) and Dave (Ireland). The battle was epic and in the end Dave stood victorious. Duck also got into the spirit of the competition, ordering a plus-sized burger named after his favorite boy-bander, Nick Lachey. A very costly mistake, my friend.
- Picked up some Dunkin Donuts on the way back to the subway. It was about time to head over to Jillian's for Bro-Night, so we all went back to our hotels to drop off our stuff and change. Duck and I put on our Brolos and we were off.
- Got to Jillian's (which was right next to Fenway Park!) where the group were already bowling. Sadly, Dave had not been allowed in, so he, Pip and CorporateLogo had ventured elsewhere for the evening. Duck and I were determined to have some Carbombs though, and luckily we finally found a place that served them. Double-plus bonus: Don't Stop Believing came on right afterward and most of the place sang along! We got 2 rounds, after which something strange happened. On our way back to the group from the bar, we passed vermi who told us that he was going to get one too and that we should wait for him. He comes back a couple of minutes later quite flummoxed. Apparently, he had been told by the bartender that they never serve Carbombs there. When he told them that we had just passed him with our 2nd round, he was informed that they just don't make them anymore. He then tries ordering Carbombs from the waitress, pointing at the drinks in front of us. She soon returns with the same answer that they don't make them. I don't know what that was all about, but not wishing to break my karma with the bartenders upstairs, we started ordering other drinks there and then just going downstairs (Spring Break, WHOOO!) for the other rounds of Carbombs. We also had a blast cheering for the bowlers and having wild discussions on the proper etiquette regarding abandoned full-plates of cookies!
- After a great night, we split up, with our group of 11 or so choosing to walk back to our hotels. We had barely gotten a block away when a rental bus pulls up alongside us, honks his horn, and opens the doors, out of which Lady Gaga is blaring! He offers us a ride and that's how the SE++ Party Bus came to be. It was crazy! All of us singing and dancing all the way home.
- Stayed up until 3 and then passed out. Slept the sleep of the innocent while duck performed dark rituals in the bathroom because of what he had eaten earlier! Hahahahah!

I discovered the arcade room on sunday...I discovered I was either a) awful at frogger or b) something was awry because I never managed to jump from the last thing to the far side without magically falling in.
Some dude was not giving up his turn at Pong so I didn't get a chance to play.

Both Chelsea and myself are rather visible in that shot.
like I told usagi, beerpax in October would be excellent as long as you nail down specific dates a couple of months in advance this time
my birthday's in October!

My goal is for both of us to go, regardless of where we're living at the time
These lads and ladies are amazing and you'd have so much fun hanging out with them!
Man, I can't believe I missed everybody by like a day!
If you'd like, we can give you the routes that we all walked and you may bask in our afterglow.
Well let me know if you found any good places to eat in that area!
Well, there was a breakfast joint where a guy will yell at you for opening the door and then someone else will throw coffee at you. That place was pretty tasty, I just don't remember the name.
Down by the convention center was an awesome dive bar by the name of bukowskis.

SH and I just got in to our apartment a little bit ago. We both had an amazing time meeting people.
Thanks for making me feel included in the groups. I was thinking it might be awkward because you all knew each other, but I had a very wonderful time.

I'm going to be super upset if you are there staying in the hotel we stayed at just a few days ago and we missed you
wait, are you talking about the Dunkin Donuts right near the Library?
because i can tell you from personal experience that bathroom has seen much, much worse.

Now I feel bad for the DD employees
They're not even in the same universe
Dangit, now I want a chocolate lavender cupcake
this is a gigantic understatement.
how Boston sustains five Dunkin Donuts per city block i will never ever understand.

Lower left a few rows back from the front.
It was a pretty great session.
Going to head to bed, read some Dresden and figure out how I get to see you all again before I invite the lot of you to my place for BeerPAX.
