Large [chat]dron Collider

LHC2.png

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, intended to collide opposing particle beams of either protons at an energy of 7 TeV (1.12 microjoules) per particle, or lead nuclei at an energy of 574 TeV (92.0 microjoules) per nucleus. The term hadron refers to such particles that are composed of quarks. It is expected that it will address the most fundamental questions of physics, hopefully allowing progress in understanding the deepest laws of nature. The LHC lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as much as 175 metres (574 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.

Maybe the thread itself is the place to discuss the topic? It's a radical idea, I know.

We made it through without any major equipment malfunctions.

Somebody did eat the Hydrogen (cupcake) early, though, so we had to find another source to replace it.

Cool. You have a wierd sense of economics.

I get the basics of how markets work. But evidence suggests that with ETS's it's never going to work. It's too complicated to implement well, and faces steep political opposition even then. I'm interested in actually doing something good - and that means beating the tough sell to the electorate, opposition parties which simply don't believe in climate change etc.

Anything which can tweaked, tinkered with or managed has administrative costs - you need those to be low to simply pass the legislation otherwise you get the classic "they're raising taxes!!!" argument.

Not raising taxes is the most important thing you can do, first and foremost, with environmental policy which a lot of people would prefer not to see happen at all.

What evidence suggests it's never going to work?

    EDIT: In the thread, maybe

You can't really graph political expendience, except in those stupid theoretical graphs.

I should look for some though.
