Looks like there is a new article that has screenshots that aren't, you know, horribly and unfairly early. It's looking good.

Hey guys, do you know if the PC versions of Silent Hills 2, 3, and 4 are any good? I've never tried the series before, but I was thinking of picking them up.

PC version is Silent Hill 2 is pretty great if you can get proper controls. It was my first introduction to SH.

Yeah, the enemies from the earlier screenshots are pretty clearly on placeholders.

    More screenshots:

Wow those videos look great. I was expecting kind of an ugly SH lite, but that looks better than I expected.

I like the part where it shows the plastic mannequin and the guy is putting organs in. It suggests something awesome.

I want SH 1 to be remade. I really want to get into the series, but there's no way I'm going back to PSX graphics.

For my money, the first game had the best balance between action and exploration. Progress didn't feel so linear (even though it was) as it did with the rest of the series, largely because there was a lot of ground to cover, and you were rewarded for poking into out-of-the-way spots like the convenience store. Later games outdid its individual aspects, but they didn't quite balance out their problem areas as well: 2 had more compelling and disturbing psychological horror, but was ridiculously easy; 3 had a better protagonist (at least, she had more personality than anybody else) but a weaker selection of weapons (the SMG was almost useless); 4 had better melee combat and worked in The Room quite well, but it also had a host of significant problems, not the least of which was an uncooperative NPC ally that could not be healed.

Basically, I think 5 needs to focus more on what makes a good game, capturing the disturbing parts of two and four without losing the credible threat that enemies in one and three provided. Again, I think the first game did this best.

Hooray. More things to give me nightmares for a week.

I think I could beat the original now. It was scary as fuck when I was 6, but I could do it now!

2 is stand-alone, so that's your best way to get into the series.

Everyone says that you have to play 1 before 3, so I probably won't ever play either.

I tried playing the original for the first time some months ago. I had a decent atmosphere going, starting to get into it...

Then the bastard bumps into a wall in the middle of a suspenseful chase sequence and I started laughing. It just cleaves the pace right in half! *clop clop clop clop clop BUMP*

I really hope that Origins turns out good. It'll be my first foray into the Silent Hill universe once it's released.

Can't you use a Holy Candle to heal Eileen? I remember going back and doing that after getting one of the bad endings, and it helped.

Oh man, those videos have me all excited for SHO. Although, is there any chance of it eventually turning up on PS2, like the Liberty City Stories and Lumines? I'm not knocking the PSP, but Silent Hill seems like one of those games that would benefit from being on a bigger screen.

Not trolling, I seriously don't really understand why people go so nuts over 1 & 3. They (#3 at least, I never played #1) look good

You don't understand why people go nuts over a game you've never played? That's only natural, I guess.

I went into Silent Hill 3 under the impression it was stand-alone, like SH2 was. Along the way there were hints as to its relationship to the original, and I loved the way the story unfolded from there. My brother, who I was playing the game alongside (we'd hand over the controller at a savepoint or if we died) didn't quite get into the story as much as I did, having only played SH2 before.

    EDIT: So yeah,

Has a lot of scans from the Silent Hill compedium, that they've been nice enough to translate for us. I like the speculation on pyramid head. From what I gathered his entity and incarnation is in every game. Shame a couple of those aren't finished being translated.
It has scans from the comics too. I own the comics. So I don't... see anything so illegal in the scans?

The only thing I didn't like about the first game is that sometimes it's frustatingly difficult to determine what you're supposed to do next. 2 was definitely a lot better about that.

How was 4? Is there a difference between the PS2 and Xbox versions? I'm going to pick it up when I finish 3.

Yeah, I think it just lasts as long as the candle burns, meaning if you use it just before you enter the room where you lose her the game treats it as if she's perfectly fine. Otherwise the scratches and crap come right back. Granted I've never actually gotten her killed, but the option to toss her a spare first-aid kit or something would still have been appreciated.

I actually kinda liked her as a character, and grew attached to her to the point where I put actual effort in keeping her alive. But man, the headaches one could save if they could order her to stay put for a moment.

If you play things right you can leave her behind in a few "safe" rooms in every level. That's what I did; the only time I ever had trouble with her was in the Apartment Complex because she kept trying to fight the invincible ghosts.
    Dumb broad.

I don't think there is any content difference between Ps2 and XBOX on part 4, but I'm pretty sure the XBOX version looks slightly better.

4 is a mixed bag. The story is there, and as you get further into it, it becomes very engrossing. But, some horrible gameplay decisions (invincible enemies who move fast and one huge escort mission) make it very frustrating. Everything that feels like SH is there in spades, but the new stuff they added kind of polarizes the opinions. I loved it, but then again, I suffered (oh, how I suffered) all the way through Rule of Rose to see the story play out :)

Origins may actually oblige me to buy a PSP.

But yeah- clunky controls and combat have always been the bane of the series. I'd love to see those fixed.
