Also how are people losing their jobs?

I really wish i knew more details, but it is awfully hard to find unbiased sources down here

There have been protests about NASA funding, and my girlfriend's dad was laid off with 35 years of experience

    My reasoning is entirely selfish

I mean people are losing jobs, that is just a fact. They are terminating the shuttle program, so those jobs are gone. However, they are funding an initiative to transfer many of those jobs into other programs and into the new stuff that they're doing.

Which isn't to say some people won't lose their job. It's just not a mass slaughter like some are making it out to be.

It's good to hear that there is at least an effort to keep on people where they can, and I'm hoping some of the discussion in this thread enlightens me a bit more, but it's still very hard to argue "oh hey at least all these people get to maybe keep there jobs" with someone who's out on his ass.

People were saying the budget was being cut because it was not going to go up as much as it usually did. So basically they were being dicks and liars.

Also a lot of the old school astronauts (Apollo guys) just made a public statement against Obama's plan. This can be chalked up to crotchety old men being conservative about things.

I also heard that this new plan is supposed to create 2500 jobs around the Space Coast, but I'm pretty sure those numbers come straight from the administration and are probably super-optimistic/flat out wrong.

Also I want Richard Branson to make love to me in space. That is all.

The estimate is 2500 new government program jobs along the coast, and 10k jobs in the private market across the country.

The space program is the one thing my wife and I have agreed not to talk about any more. She's for slashing the space program down to weather satellites and telescopes and giving the rest of the money to orphans, whereas I believe we should be selling off underutilized states to China to fund NASA and killing off astronauts like we're sending them to Oregon in the 1800s.

It's just not something we can find a great deal of middle ground on, and conversations always end up with both of us feeling grumpy.

No that's just the nature of government and how "spending cuts" work. Congress very rarely actually "cuts" anything they typically just cut a program's projected growth.

I still think we should go back to the moon and establish something more permanent there. 40 years ago was just a race to stand on the moon, now we should look to establish ourselves as a moon presence. Doesn't get much more space dominant than that. Especially if we're working on heavy-payload rocket technology again.

I think the military spending needed to be cut too thought because I'm a pretty staunch beliver that our education system needs to be completely reworked.

I don't think Obama could possibly make me happy, short of "Forget Medicare, all that money goes into SPACE" but I'm pleased to see he at least reinstated the project my sister was working on.

Considering the difficulty in escaping Earth's gravitational pull versus escaping the Moon's, it makes a lot of sense in the long-term to start a moon base if we're going to be launching anything really big anywhere else. Of course, even with a moon base it would take quite literally months or years to send a man anywhere interesting, and that's not really going to change until we develop some sort of near-light-speed travel.

What I really hate is how many congressmen frame any cuts as "But our state needs jobs!"
When Republicans do it, it's extra awful. That is socialism, Republicans- we don't need the govt. to employ everybody in your state!
We should base what we do not on jobs, but on what the govt. needs to actually do
I'm for more unmanned space exploration, personally. Getting a man on mars seems symbolic, but not as cool as sending probes out everywhere else.

They need to take a more focused operational path as well.

    what about failure to yield

    or jaywalking

If you fail to yield, you hate the driver who had the right of way.

Jaywalking means you hate the crosswalk that's probably ten or fifteen feet away from you.

    Stupid crosswalks.

As for NASA, it is the one program I don't think we can throw enough money at. Just need better controls over spending and focus on better technology and getting that technology developed quickly. If his plan will do this, then I am all for it.

All I'm saying is I want to go into space before I die. Dear NASA, I'm ready to go right now!
